Narrative Poetry

A narrative poem tells a story. Short or long, if it has a plot it's a narrative.

What parts of a story are contained in the following verse from “The Raven”?

Point of view? Setting? Plot? Past or present tense?

Narrative Poetry

Ah, distinctly I remember, it was in the bleak December,

And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.

Eagerly I wished the morrow; vainly I had sought to borrow

From my books surcease of sorrow, sorrow for the lost Lenore,.

For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore,

Nameless here forevermore.

The stories can be humorous like “The Cremation of Sam McGee” (opening verse)

There are strange things done in the midnight sun

By the men who moil for gold;

The Arctic trails have their secret tales

That would make your blood run cold;

The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,

But the queerest they ever did see

Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge

I cremated Sam McGee
