The Facts

• We are in the midst of a post-typographic world as electronic text becomes embedded in our daily lives and print text is no longer the most prominent medium (Reinking, 1998) US adolescents in 2005 spent more time

reading online than print books (Leu, 2009) It has been reported that there were

approximately 1.6 billion Internet users worldwide at the end of 2008 which was a 336.1% increase from 2000 (Internet World Stats, 2009).

Web 2.0 and the Read/Write Web• “Web 2.0 is an umbrella term that is used to

refer to a new era of Web-enabled applications that are built around user-generated or user-manipulated content, such as wikis, blogs, podcasts, and social networking sites” (http://www.pewinternet.org/topics/Web-20.aspx).

• The Internet has been called the Read/Write Web (Richardson, 2008), where 21st century learners can not only read content but create it as well

The New Literacies Perspective

• Leu, Kinzer, Coiro, and Cammack (2004) define New Literacies as:

The new literacies of the Internet and other ICT include the skills, strategies, and dispositions necessary to successfully use and adapt to the rapidly changing information and communication technologies and contexts that continuously emerge in our world and influence all areas of our personal and professional lives. These new literacies allow us to use the Internet and other ICT to identify important questions, locate information, critically evaluate the usefulness of that information, synthesize information to answer those questions, and then communicate the answers to others (p. 1570).
