Berdasarkan UU Sisdiknas No. 20/2003:

Pendidikan jarak jauh (PJJ) adalah pendidikan yang peserta didiknya terpisah dari pendidik dan pembelajarannya menggunakan berbagai sumber belajar melalui teknologi komunikasi, informasi, dan media lain.

1. Pendidikan jarak jauh dapat diselenggarakan pada semua jalur, jenjang, dan jenis pendidikan

2. Pendidikan jarak jauh berfungsi memberikan layanan pendidikan kepada kelompok masyarakat yang tidak dapat mengikuti pendidikan secara tatap muka atau reguler

3. Pendidikan jarak jauh diselenggarakan dalam berbagai bentuk, modus, dan cakupan yang didukung oleh sarana dan layanan belajar serta sistem penilaian yang menjamin mutu lulusan sesuai dengan standar nasional pendidikan

4. Ketentuan mengenai penyelenggaraan pendidikan jarak jauh sebagaimana dimaksud pada ayat (1), ayat (2), dan ayat (3) diatur lebih lanjut dengan peraturan pemerintah

Fungsi

• Pendidikan jarak jauh pada semua jalur, jenjang dan jenis pendidikan berfungsi memberikan layanan pendidikan kepada kelompok masyarakat yang tidak dapat mengikuti pendidikan secara tatap muka atau reguler.

• Pendidikan jarak jauh bertujuan meningkatkan dan memeratakan akses masyarakat terhadap pendidikan, serta meningkatkan mutu dan relevansi pendidikan.

• Pendidikan jarak jauh dilaksanakan dengan mengacu kepada Standar Nasional Pendidikan.

Penyelenggaraan

Pendidikan jarak jauh dapat diselenggarakan pada berbagai jenjang, jalur, dan jenis pendidikan di mana peserta didik secara spasial terpisah dari pendidik, dan belajar secara mandiri, terstruktur, dan terbimbing dengan menggunakan berbagai sumber belajar melalui teknologi komunikasi, informasi, dan media lain.

Pendidikan jarak jauh diselenggarakan dengan sistem operasional berbasis teknologi komunikasi, informasi, dan media lain dalam bentuk layanan registrasi, distribusi bahan ajar, pembelajaran jarak jauh, bantuan belajar, dan ujian.

Penyelenggaraan

Kurikulum dan beban belajar pada program pendidikan jarak jauh sama dengan kurikulum satuan pendidikan yang setingkat.

Proses pembelajaran dalam pendidikan jarak jauh diselenggarakan secara interaktif melalui teknologi komunikasi, informasi, dan media lain.

Evaluasi hasil belajar menitikberatkan pada penilaian pencapaian kompetensi berdasarkan prinsip belajar tuntas.
