DESCRIPTION

The School of Medicine of Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC), a Commission of Higher Education accredited institution, was established on 23 July 2001 by Dr. Paulo C. Campos, a National Scientist in Nuclear Medicine. Dr. Campos envisioned the school to be an outstanding institution for medical education and health research. As such, the School shall provide an educational and scientific environment that prepares the student to become professionally competent, socially-relevant and compassionate physicians with a strong commitment to lifelong learning. The School is also committed to undertake relevant reforms on medical education in response to changing national and global health needs and scenarios as well as newly generated medical information. The medical school is staffed by a committed, academically and clinically–respected and experienced faculty; implements a traditional but synchronized curriculum with early clinical integration and emphasis on interactive learning process; and boasts of superior teaching and clinical facilities notably its main teaching–training hospital – the Medical Center Manila, a Philhealth Accredited Center for Excellence and ISO 9001 Certified Hospital, a rare distinction among tertiary private or government hospitals in the Philippines, as well as clinical affiliation with the University of the Philippines College of Medicine – Philippine General Hospital Medical Center. As the "Benjamin" among the health science schools of the Emilio Aguinaldo College, which include Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing-Midwifery, Occupational-Physical Therapy, Nutrition-Dietetics, Medical Technology, Radiology Technology and Respiratory Therapy, the Medical School is always conscious of the need for close collaboration with its local sister health units as well as other respected affiliated medical institutions, i.e. Qiqihar Medical University in China and the University of the Philippines College of Medicine – Philippine General Hospital Medical Center, in order that EAC becomes a true Health Science Center that is recognized not only nationally but also internationally through its significant contributions to the health manpower training needs of the country and the rest of the world. The School of Medicine articulates the vision that it will be an outstanding medical and health research institution. It will provide an educational scientific environment that will prepare medical students to become competent, humane and caring physicians even as they sustain their own development thru opportunities of life-long studies. The School of Medicine is a component unit of the Emilio Aguinaldo College. It is committed to the education and training of relevant, competent and compassionate physicians who will be effective health care providers, researchers and teachers imbued with the strong desire to continue the pursuit of knowledge and a deep sense of service to the local society (locally) and the community of nations (globally).

About University

Manila Central University had a very humble beginning. In 1903, on the request of several students from the University of Sto. Tomas and other individuals, Dr. Alejandro Albert organized a private review class.

This review class developed into the Escuela de Farmacia del Liceo de Manila in 1904, with Dr. Alejandro Albert, Alfredo L. Guerrero, Antonio C. Llamas, Feliciano Paterno and Filemon Tanchoco, and all faculty members of the institution, as incorporators. This was the first educational institution of its kind established and managed by Filipinos. Its success demonstrated the undoubted capacity and ability of the Filipinos managing their own affairs in the educational field, especially then, when at that time of its initial organization it was barely 4 years after the establishment of the Philippine Educational System.

The Manila College of Pharmacy became one of the leading institutions of higher learning of its kind. It produced many prominent pharmacists. Stable and secure in its position, the college expanded in number in 1929. Its Board of Trustees, answering a long felt need for the training of the youth for dental services, opened the College of Dentistry. Manila College of Pharmacy became then the Manila College of Pharmacy and Dentistry of pre-war time.

Opened and dedicated to gave the best education for our youth, the College maintained its leading position in the educational field. Unfortunately, the war closed its portals in 1941.

During the Japanese occupation, the enemy systematically looted its extensive facilities, laboratory, equipment, museum, etc. and during the liberation period, it was further looted of everything but the shell of its two buildings.

After the liberation of the Philippines, the Board of Trustees reorganized the College into Manila Central College.

In addition to Pharmacy and Dentistry, the reorganized institution offered courses in Liberal Arts, Education, Commerce and Business Administration and Post Graduate courses in Pharmacy. And finally in 1947, the College of Medicine was added. In 1948, it became the Manila Central University after having opened the College of Nursing and Graduate School and more than sufficiently meeting the requirements for a university.

In 1949, the MCU inaugurated its 10-hectare campus in Caloocan City. Since then, additional school buildings and service facilities have been constructed yearly in the 1960s. The College of Optometry, Midwifery and High School and Kindergarten classes were also opened. Expansion projects and development program for the whole university and individual colleges were continuously drawn to meet the educational demands and the objectives of the University.
