PHYSICS INVESTIGATORY PROJECT ON

ZENER DIODE AS VOLTAGE REGULATOR

You  might  have  seen  voltage  fluctuaAons  at  your  home,  which  may  cause  damage  to  any  working  electrical  appliance.  What  one  needs  is  a  protecAon  device  or  circuit,  which  can  be  installed  to  curb  out  the  voltage  spikes  and  provide  a  constant  voltage  output  to  electrical  devices.  For  this,  we  can  use  a  zener  diode  as  a  voltage  regulator.

In  this  project,  you  will  connect  two  loads  (resistors)  in  series  and  connect  their

combinaAon  to  a  fluctuaAng  voltage  source  (using  a  preset)  and  test  the  Kirchhoff’s  law.  However,  when  you  connect  a  zener  diode  in  parallel  to  one  of  the  loads,  the  voltage  across  the  corresponding  load  becomes  constant  aPer  the  reverse  breakdown  voltage  of  the  zener  diode  is  achieved.  All  the  voltage  readings  are  taken  using  a  mulAmeter  and  Kirchhoff’s  Voltage  law  is  verified  in  the  circuit  under  different  input  voltages.
