  3. 3. Film brief- -Mood board 1. Starts off in a mental institution and goes back in time 2. Starts of with the image of her getting wheeled in ,while this is happening the directors and producers names comes up , then when it gets to the second image the flashbacks start. 2.Goes back in time , the group of friends having a little house party and drinking. (party montage) 3. While the group fall asleep, the camera focuses on bloody heels leaving the house with bloody heel prints on the floor behind her. 4.After the group wake up the next morning , they find one of there group member (Amir) dead, the group are in shock and Imogen pleads to call the police but Jason hesitates and tells Imogen and Will to stay in the house and clean it and him and Aria will take care of the body. (birds eye view) 5. The opening ends with Jason burying the tape and the pair of heels from shot 3 whilst him and aria are burying the body and the evidence.

  7. 7. Film brief- Genre/storyline/audience /theories - Theme: Drama/Thriller Viewpoint: From the viewpoint of the group of main characters. Mistake is a teen oriented drama/thriller which follows a group of teenagers as they try to find out who killed one of their closest friends. (Draws on some ideas from Bates Motel) Were going to use the lighting and non agetic sound to illustrate this theme . We are also going to use the lighting to make the audience understand the mood of the characters and the scene.

Film brief- Location- 1 day The scene opens in a mental hospital (20 seconds) the character getting wheeled in on a wheel chair (tracking shot), during this scene it cuts and introduces the producers name etc. Then it flashes back to a montage of a party located in a living room (30 seconds) The scene ends in a forest focusing on the two characters digging ( 40 seconds) The mental hospital bit can be filmed in the drama studio. 233 The party scene can be filmed in a living room.- 223 The digging bit can be filmed in the calthorpe project.

Film brief- Risk assessment- Area of concern- The room of production is small and therefore not a lot of people can be in together because they may trip over the cables on the floor and the equipment we are going to be using. Therefore to avoid this we are going to have to be aware of spacing and attempt to only shoot once so the room wont be over crowed with the actors and production crew. And just in case 0f a fire, the room we have chosen is next door to a fire exit and therefore there is easy access to enter and exist the room. Another area of concern may be the graveyard scene, because its outside the weather may be an issue for instance if its raining the rain may damage the camera and lighting used , it may also distract the actors. In this case to avoid these issues we are going to have to the check the weather in advance and bring extra people in case it is raining to help cover the equipment . The level of risk is very low as we are aware of these issues and know how to avoid it and have back up plans made just in case .

Film brief- Sound For all the dialogue we are going to aim to use digetic sound but however because most of our filming is going to be outside and weather conditions may make it hard to hear so in that case we are going to record over the dialogue. But during the opening we are going to use non-digetic sound to play from the mental hospital scene to the party/gathering changing the volume to illustrate the mood- peking duk- high Mr bright side
  13. 13. Film brief- Lighting In the opening scene we going to use sterile lighting to emphasis that its starting in a medical institution. However in the second scene we are going to use natural lighting , mid key lighting because we want overall highlights minimal shadow. In the digging scene we are going to be applying low key lighting , overall shadows minimal lighting .

Film brief- Camera angle shot list The scene opens with a tracking shot following the patient getting pushed on a wheel chair facing the patient focusing on the patient not the person pushing them. Then we fade out by using our music while its getting louder we zoom in on the patients face then when the tempo changes we go into our next scene ,starts off dramatically then changes mood. Then the next scene is a montage of the five characters taking shots(fast forward montage) the montage starts with the clock , then start focusing on the characters (clock behind the five shot glasses, the camera focuses on the clock then camera shifts to the other side and the montage starts) .Then it focuses on a clock to show the difference in time cuts into the characters sleeping and the do the scene where they exchange dialogue
  15. 15. Film brief- Audience- Target audience- The age certificate which we have placed on this film is a 12. This is mainly because of the level of violence in the film, we would have rated it a 15 if we had brutal images which people under the age of 15 may be to sensitive to watch. Also because the violent images are not dwelled on for long periods of time we felt placing an 15 certificate on the film was not necessary. The age group which our film is aimed at our 12 and above this is because the characters and also what takes part in the film, this age range will be more impacted by the film in terms of how good the film will be to them. Some of this targeted audience could relate to main plot of getting involved in situations which get out of hand. Also this targeted audience involves a group of friends innocently enjoying themselves till the situation takes a turn for the worst so the impact on this audience will be stronger. So overall we decided to target our audience at who will the film have the most impact on and which age range will be most interested to watch the film. As well as this we looked at the criteria of BBFC and how they go about stating a films age certificate.

  17. 17. Film research- Bates motel is an American thriller programme.We are going to use the character of Norman Bates from bates motel and psycho as a foundation for the main character of Aria. In bates motel, non digetic sound it used throughout the trailer to help set the tone of the upcoming episodes. However dialogue is used to give the audience a little taste of what the programmes is about and what they should expect. Bates motel has inspired us to use similar sound for instance we are going to start with non digetic sound during the mental institution scene and use the volume of the music to make the transition of scenes, from a very sinister dark scene to a fun loud brighter sequence. https://www.youtube.com/watc h?v=7lCWKKNGiKs Further on in the programme , the programme goes through a series of flash backs and flash forwards to help create suspense and explain the story , this is where we got our original idea of opening our movie with a flashback, we are going to try recreate this to help illustrate the emotions experienced. The motel is the location in which the violent murders and deaths occur, therefore we tried to represent this by having the scene 0f the death occur in a specific location as well within our Media Project to help illustrate the importance of the location. Laura Mulvey theory of film is that women are often objectified in media , they are often looked at with a male gaze , generally seen as sex objects and there are only two roles for them in the film industries which is a virgin or the whore. However in bates motel they go against this theory similarly our film we break theses roles and introduce a more masculine character for the role of the women with a twist of insanity.
  18. 18. Film research- The tall man is a mix of horror and thriller , this is something we originally wanted to recreate. We are using the character of Jessica Benning to help build the character of Jason, who is aware of the crimes, however in this case the character of Jason doesn't condemn this behaviour and hopes it would stop. The use of the notice broad with the missing children is the main focus of the opening illustrating the importance of this allows the audience to understand and get a taste of the movies plot. The opening starts of with dietetic sound. The sound of a child humming/singing this plays with the innocence and turns it into something sinister, setting the mood of the movie. This is broken by the use of non digetic sound using the volume to change the mood , this is something we are going to use for transition between scenes . Angela Mcrobbie s theory of film suggest that men and women are often represented through stereotypes and traditional roles. However in tall man , the use of the women being the most powerful and the main male character being the sidekick rebels against the stereotypes of the role of male an d women .And goes against what the audience are use to watching therefore we have agreed to go against this theory and use it as a strength ,that surprises the audience.

Film research- How To Get Away With Murder genre is crime, mystery and drama, it is about a group of ambitious law students and their brilliant criminal defence professor become involved in a twisted murder plot that promises to change the course of their lives. We plan to use parts of the TV show How To Get Away With Murder for inspiration for the mis en scene and cinematography for the opening sequence by using contrasting colours in the flashback and flash forward scenes . For example in the flashback scenes the cinematography is generally cold from using mainly blue lighting , during the main flash forward scenes the cinematography is warm as mainly yellow, and occasionally white , lighting is used. We are also using inspiration from How To Get Away With Murder for some of our theme as the TV show also follows a group of friends who engage in burying a body and keeping it secret.

Film research- In scream the heading goes from big to small in bold on a black background, This suggest that the word scream has great significance within the film suggesting that there will be a lot of screaming going on from the characters but also from the audience. Also the colour of which it is being displayed in also connotes bad atmospheres where red can be seen to illustrate danger and white can be seen to suggest deadliness. In Scream extreme and close and tracking shots were used to build momentum and intensity for the on screen moment and to allocate the audience to get into the mind of the actor which helps the audience understand the emotions of the actor better. This was done when tracking the main character where she is hiding from the suspected villain in which she is portraying emotion shown from facial expressions and actions. In Scream panning shot was used to allow the audience to see what the character is viewing but also in this case builds intensity because it allows the audience to see and be aware of something that the character cant. Close ups were used to portray facial expressions and to introduce the characters so the audience can get a sense of their personality from the off for example it helps explain the characteristics of the goody and the villain, this links to Propps narrative theory because a close ups enables you to see facial expressions which then allows the audience to tell by the expressions if the character is a villain or victim. In addition the pace of the zooming is either slow which suggest that something is going to happen at that moment where as, fast zooming with loud non diegetic sounds brings a moment to where shivers may go down the audiences back.

In this case the darkness is used to represent fear, these are movies that strive to elicit the emotions of fear, horror and terror from viewers. Darkness was used to capture the fact that the genre of the film is scary/horror with a connotation of darkness which is danger and evil. The dark mise en scene immediately alerts the audience to the genre of the film, which is important to get across in the opening minutes. Harsh fluorescent light was used in Creep and slightly in Saw. In Creep it was used in a point of view shot with jagged shots which makes the lighting more effective. Also it allows the audience to ponder on why is the character viewing these disturbing images of bloody knives and bodies where it appears that someone is attempting to murder another in one of the stories. But also most importantly it sets the scene in terms of how scary the film is going to be and what it contains in terms of weapons. American Horror story opening is from a characters perspective which breaks down the four walls and involves the audience to get into the mind frame of the character. Non- diegetic sound is used throughout the opening, the volume is used to illustrate the suspense and create tension.
  22. 22. Shots - Insidious is a horror film with a unexpected twist. It is about a family who have recently moved into a new house , where disaster strikes the young boy and the family start experiencing surreal episodes of something ghostly , before long their lives turn up side down and they go to get help and answers. At the beginning of the film, a shadowy old woman is seen inside a house while the inhabitants sleep.
  23. 23. Shots - We see an establishing shot to set the scene and to make the audience aware of the surroundings.
  24. 24. Shots - This is an aerial shot looking down at the staircase and the shadow allowing the audience a sense that someone is watching which creates suspense and mystery which keeps the audience intrigued.
  25. 25. Shots - The slight dutch tilt on the clock illustrates a sense of confusion and discomfort.
  26. 26. Audience research Snake Eyes (Brian De Palma) 1999 Snake Eyes isnt really even a good movie, but because the opening is so intriguing it does the right tricks to get your attention. Kicking off with an absurdly complex 12.5- minute tracking shot that combines De Palmas dual loves of seediness and nested images as it follows Nicolas Cage, as he works all the angles in the lead up to a title fight in Atlantic City. lizard -men ,snipers and conspiracy its such a scrumptious set-up, youll never believe the taste the film eventually leaves in your mouth. https://vimeo.com/3235512 The Lion King (Rob Minkoff) 1994 The opening scene of The Lion King offers up the only African chant thats immediately recognizable to most Americans this side of Paul Simons Graceland album. The sun rises, the song continues, and all the animals herald a new dawn. This was the last golden era of Disney animation, and this opening scene goes a long way toward explaining why they held the pole position for decades, mixing stunning animation with a overpoweringly positive worldview.

Nowadays you are as likely to pop to your local cinema to watch a heartfelt documentary, an intriguing indie-film or even live opera as you are to see a big 3D family film or action flick. All of this has resulted in an increasingly diverse range of audiences going to the cinema on a regular basis, all of them highly targetable by any number of criteria including film choice and location.

Pearl and dean Because a high majority of their viewers are 7-14 or 15 + therefore our thriller will fit in perfectly because we have rated it a 12 so it might be a bit sensitive for viewers younger then 12 but for viewers 12 and over it would fit because they would be able to understand the plot, the only reason we have rated it a 12 is so we don't restrict our audience and therefore it can also turn into a spooky family film etc. However because it is a thriller even though it is rated 12 , it is still aimed at older viewers as well.
