Establishing shot: An opening, often long shot which sets up the scene.Effect: The light from the door lights up the room and you see the room that the man is being held in .

Medium Shot: A shot framing the human figure from the chest up.Effect: Allows the audience to see the objects in he background and enhances that the man can’t see the people that just walked into the room as it is a shot of his back.

Three shot, medium shot, low angle: Three subjects in frame framing the human figure from the waist up. The camera is pointing slightly up.Effect: The fact that you can see that two of the characters are higher up than the man that is sitting downs shows that they have more power and are the more dominant characters. By having all three characters in the frame you an easily view this.

It represents the individual as being the less dominant character.

It’s also a reaction shot as you can see how the man feels about what was just said.

The audience can tell that the other two men are behind him which makes him even more vulnerable because the audience and the man cant see him.

The 180 rule is an important concept in video and film production. It refers to an imaginary line which cuts through the middle of the scene from side to side with respect to the camera. Crossing the line changes the viewers perspective in such a way that it may cause disorientation and confusion. For this reason crossing this line is usually avoided.

In Hostel you can see that the above rule is used because all the camera shots are taken from the same side of the imaginary line.

Match on actionThe cut between two shots showing that no time has past between them. For example in the two shots below you can see the gun in the first shot and also the second shot. They show the same point in time from showing that no time has past in between the shots.

It’s important as it allows continuity to be shown.
