Santiago City.

• The name of the city, Saint James of the Knights, makes allusion to a group of knights who had come from La Isabela city to stay in Santiago.• Santiago Called Heart City because it

is located at the heart of El Cibao Valley.

Founded in 1495 during the first wave of European colonization of the New World, Santiago is the first ´´Santiago´´ of the Americas and is the second largest 

metropolis in Dominican Republic.

• The original colony was in the city of Jacagua, but when it was destroyed by an earthquake, it was moved to its present location in 1506. • It was devastated by another

earthquake in 1562.

Concepción de La Vega It was founded in the years 1490 by Columbus, but moved after a great earthquake in the years 1560.

La Vega gradually grew up around the fort, and after 1508, when gold was found there, Concepción became the first gold boomtown in the continent. By 1510 it was one of the largest and most important European cities in the hemisphere.

The city was designed by the brothers Christopher and Bartolomé Columbus, in the 1496. The town was considered the main commercial and maritime port of the island.

• Around 1555, Puerto Plata's importance as a port town was lost and it became one of the places where pirates came often.

This city was the richest and cosmopolitan in the Caribbean.
