A schools led systemWe know that one of the most powerful ways of achieving improvement is

through collaboration, with the best schools, settings and leaders supporting those that are more challenged. But it’s not just the school or centre receiving support that improves – providing support gives even the most accomplished teachers and leaders an opportunity to gain new ideas

and improve their own practice.

Sir Michael suggested that education chiefs in the worst councils should be stripped of their powers to run school improvement programmes with their responsibilities handed over to private companies, chains of academies or high performing local authorities from other areas. Telegraph 5 March 2013.

Notions of Impact

Research Councils UK (RCUK) defines research impact as 'the demonstrable contribution that excellent research makes to society and the economy'.

With speakers from a range of different organisations, the event offered an excellent opportunity to discuss issues around educational marginalisation. Yet amidst this debate I was struck by just how often the key message from our research (and the voice of the young people who participated) were obscured and distorted. Val Gillies
