AUDIENCE FEEDBACKBy Kate Wiselka

WHY WE WANTED AUDIENCE FEEDBACK

After asking a sample of our primary and secondary audience questions regarding our opening sequence, we were able to learn what our audience enjoyed about the sequence and also the things that they feel could have been improved upon.

WHAT WAS LEARNT

All of the people asked said they enjoyed watching the opening sequence as although it did not reveal much about the narrative, it left them intrigued and wanting to discover more about the protagonist and her story.

Along with this, all of the audience members asked said they would want to watch the whole film if it were to be produced; they felt that the narrative had potential to keep them interested.

WHAT WAS LEARNT

Many of the people questioned felt that the protagonist was played well and the actress fitted the role; also, they felt that they could connect with her as she seemed ‘ordinary’.

They also felt that she was introduced well and her introverted nature was present, particularly through her facial expressions - clearly showing that she was lonely - and also through the shots where she receives the text from her mum.

WHAT WAS LEARNT

In general, the audience felt that the use of coloured light in the film was naturalistic and appeared to fit in with the character’s emotions. Many also said they felt it was a gradual and therefore natural change of light as the colours were not overpowering. However, some, mainly from our secondary audience category, argued that the yellow lighting in the shed was perhaps a bit unnatural as it seemed to be a much more vivid yellow than perhaps sunlight is.

WHAT WAS LEARNT

The font type of our production got mixed reviews; some audience members felt that the font did not feel suitable for the type of production we made - with it being a social realism for sophisticated audience members, however other’s felt that it fitted well with the narrative and themes of art in the production.

WHAT WE WOULD IMPROVE ON BASED ON OUR FEEDBACK

If we were to make this opening sequence again, we would definitely take into account what the audience are saying. We would perhaps consider taking more time into making sure that our lighting was as absolute and realistic as possible along with ensuring that the colours appear natural.

Also, we would look at ensuring that all of our shots are as well done as possible as a few audience members picked up on slightly shaky camera movements. We would try to use the best equipment available to try to correct this and take extra time to make sure the camera is as stable as possible. There are also other shots we may consider using such as a macro shot of dust landing; this would make our production more cinematic and artistic.

Finally, we would take a lot longer looking at and deciding font types. Although we felt that we had chosen an appropriate font, as did many of our audience members, there may be a font that both suits the social realism genre as well as fits our narrative.
