At beginning of this second semester I was a little scared. I knew it was not going to be an easy task because I had 19 credits. Life is about having challenges and confronting them. That is why I did pretty well in terms of having a balance between the courses and my personal life. In order to be a complete professional or in our case developing professionals, one should have positive attitude towards learning. One should be determined, dedicated, curious, and creative. In order to succeed as a person, you need all this. One needs to have a balance and to perform all of them at the same level. As part of my second semester at The University of Puerto Rico at Cayey, I participated at the RISE Program. Here I grew as a scientist and as student. I learned to take more responsibilities and to do team work. Being part of Biology 4997 was a challenge, but I did it with dedication and effort. I learned many laboratory techniques and presentation skills. One of my acquired experiences was speaking English more fluently. I did about three power point presentations and these helped me to organize investigations in way that they can be explained to a public. I got prepared for random questions from the public and I am going to admit that this was something very difficult. I also prepared for criticism because this always helps you to be a better person. Doing different investigations in the same semester was a very good experience. Around every two weeks we participated at workshops and this was a regarding experience because we learned different topics related to Quemistry and Biology. To be honest, the workshops that included Quemistry were a very big challenge because I have not taken that class. I only know the basic material that I took at my high school. This course has revealed part of my creative personality. As part of this course, I made a creative story. This included fiction and real events.

It was based on how an affected part of the brain of a mouse induced him to be obese. I really enjoyed doing this because it was like doing something different from what I normally do. I normally study, socialize or read, but I never write a story. Also, we took different workshops. One of these was about the mislabeling of sea food. This is very important because this can expose consumers to serious health risks. Dr. Robert Ross gave another workshop in which we learned to use microscopies and micro techniques. This is very important because with the help of microscopes new diseases can be discovered. All these workshops help in a positive manner to our world. Another example is the usage of nanotechnology. One of the things that got me the most amazed was that fibers done by using nanotechnology can be used as drug delivery systems and thereby treat cancer. On the other hand, as part of my research I worked with Dr. Arce. One of the workshops was related to water sampling and testing. This is very important because deaths caused by pathogens can be prevented. In addition, the workshop about Protein Isolation and Page Electrophoresis was an important one because plasminogen activator (TPA) can be used to make new medications which can help in the prevention of blood clots and strokes. The workshop about Experiments with Membranes, Osmosis& Selective Transport was also very interesting because studies related to this investigation can lead to new medications that can pass easier through the cell membrane.

At the end of this course I learned many techniques which I know that would guide me to a better future. Participating at two different big projects was very regarding. Not to forget that being part of The Phage Hunting Program was a very exciting. I acquired patience. I know I grew as a scientist and I am very proud of all the things that I learned.
