Getting started• Go to iCat (http://icat.kingston.ac.uk/) and sign-in• Go to Database List• Choose R then Refworks (connect via Shibboleth• Complete the New User Information Form• Click on Register

Adding your own references

You can add references from scratch. Go to References then Add New

For most business courses choose Harvard – (Kingston Cite them right) as your reference style, choose your reference type and complete the form

Importing references

You can very easily export references directly from some of the most common databases you use as a business student. For example from iCat select Details under a reference you wish to export. Then select Actions on the right hand side and choose RefWorks from the pull down menu.

Importing references from ABI/Inform

In ABI select references you wish to export then choose Save and RefWorks

Importing references from Business Source Premier 1

In Business Source Premier add the references you wish to keep to the folder and then click on Folder View.

to RefWorks and select Export

Click on Settings and change Show links to RefWorks, click on Save

Getting references from other databases

Not all databases have a direct export function. For others you will need to save a file and then import this. Full details are on RefWorksunder Help: Choose Launch help file, then Getting References into Your Account and then Importing From Online Data Vendors. Finally select the database you are using.

Creating a bibliography

Within RefWorks:• Click on Bibliography (top of page) → Create Bibliography• Choose references to include (Selected, All on the page, All in the list)• Output Style: select e.g. Harvard (Kingston Cite them right) • File Type: select Word for Windows (2000 or later)• Select: Create Bibliography• You may need to click here (window at bottom right of page) to transfer the

bibliography automatically to a Word document which you can then name and save

1. To install Write–N-Cite4, click on the Service Store button on the desktop and select show available services if unticked

2. Find RefWorks - Write-N-Cite 4 from the alphabetical list and click request

3. The PC will notify you when it has delivered RefWorks Write-N-Cite

In RefWorks under Tools select Write-N-CiteIn Downloads choose the appropriate format for your device

1. Having installed Write-N-Cite4 you need to link it to your account2. Go back to RefWorks: Select Tools then Write-N-Cite3. Under how do I log into Write-N-Cite 4 using my institutional credentials,

copy the long code (here redacted)

4. Open Write-N-Cite 4 and click on the Refworks tab and select Logon. Paste the code into the Login Code text box provided. Write-N-Cite 4 will link it directly to your account

5. If you use a different PC in the future you may have to repeat this step

Using Write-N-Cite4

On a university PC: select Write-N-Cite4 from All Programs OROn your own device: open Word

The first time you log in to Write-N-Cite it will automatically sync with your RefWorks account. You can resync later by clicking on Sync My Database under Extras

Using Write-N-Cite4

Select the output (referencing) style for your document, click on the pull down menu next to Style, then Select Other Style, then e.g. Harvard – (Kingston Cite Them Right)

Using Write-N-Cite4

Select a citation from a folder or by using the search boxClick on the reference you wish to insert into your paper. You will see a preview in your current Output Style. Click OK to insert.

Start writing your paper. To add a citation click Insert Citation and Insert New. This will launch the insert/edit citation box

Using Write-N-Cite4

When you have finished inserting citations you can create the bibliography. To do this go to Bibliography Options then Insert Bibliography.

Don’t forget to Save your work from time to time
