Considerations-Questions• Presence of Registered Veterinary Doctor ?• What is the species, age, sex, and physical condition of the animals being

captured?• What need to be done with or to the animals while they are restrained?• Is physical restraint or chemical immobilization the better option?• Is adequate assistance available?• Is there area of operation cordon off ?• Is the proper equipment and sufficient manpower available?• What is the local geography and land cover like?• What is the local weather on the capture days?• Is there a written permission for Immobilization with the name of

Registered Veterinary Doctor and your name from the Competent Authority?

• All above things must be always discuss as par SOP with Registered Veterinary Doctor and Higher authority of Dept. at the actual site of operation only.

Page 20: Restrain and Immobilization of wildlife

Immobilization Principles

Registered Veterinary Doctor must be present while immobilization at the site of operation.

Enclosure should be away from the public.

Enclosure should not have any obstacles for the operator aiming to dart the subject.

Do not carrying immobilization of animals near water bodies.

Tranquilized animal should be lifted and crated immediately.

Blindfold necessary.

In sufficient force/pressure will cause the dart to fall it reaches the target.

Page 21: Restrain and Immobilization of wildlife

If impact is not sufficient, the needle may not penetrate the skin completely and dart may fail to discharge the contents.

Aiming a particular animal in herd is not easy. Needs to isolate the animal to avoid the risk of hitting other animals.

After darting the animal the operator should move out from its sight but keep a watch over the darted animal without making his presence felt by the darted animals as well as its companions Any tranquilization operation in the evening or night is not ethical.

Climatic conditions like wind of high velocity affects the flight of dart.Always strictly follow SOP during the Immobilization .
