“My department needs help, we keeprepeating the same

mistakes overand over…”

“Have you thoughtAbout implementing

an After Action Review Process? It’s verygood at capturing

‘Lessons Learned!’”

“I’m going to use

Gagnè's nine steps

of instructions during my

design,but with a

more learner-centered

approach”

Before they even come to class, the learner’s manager discusses the need for it and what he expects upon their

return

Page 6: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

In turn, the learners discuss what they need to learn and be able to perform

Page 7: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

They negotiate what their take-a-ways will be, thus they are ‘pre-framed’

before they even enter the learning environment

Page 8: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

And rather than telling them what an ‘After Action Review’ (AAR) and

‘Lessons Learned’ are

Page 9: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

They are going to tell me what it means to them

Page 10: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

Rather than reading them a predetermined objective

Page 11: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

They are going to tell me what they need in order to implement the AAR process

Page 12: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

Rather than me telling them what we learned in the past

Page 13: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

They are going to tell me how their experiences will help them and where it

falls short

Page 14: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

I am going to present some material; however, it’s a case study

Page 15: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

And they are going to have to read and discuses this example and then they

are going to have to produce the information

Page 16: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

Depending upon their skill level, I may have to provide some ‘leading questions’ to make it a guided

discovery rather than an exploratory activity

Page 17: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

After they complete their case study

Page 18: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

We will compare their solutions to the Army’s After Action Review solution

Page 19: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

In the first activity the model or example (case study) was produced for them

and they extracted the required information from it

Page 20: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

Now that they have the information to do it, they will produce a model or example

by each of them actually leading an AAR session

Page 21: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

Thus we had them produce the information or content, then we had them produce the supporting model or example

This is essential for ‘whole task’ practice so they will be able to perform when they return to their jobs

Page 22: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

This allows them to be producers of their own learning, rather than just

consumers

Page 23: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

An accomplished performer will monitor their performance

Page 24: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

And provide constructive feedback

Page 25: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

When they return to their job, their manager will ensure they get to put their new skills to work

Page 26: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

He will also let them know how they are performing

Page 27: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

We will provide a wiki to drop their documents into that were produced

during the AAR sessions so that others can learn from them

Page 28: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

We will set them up on Yammer, a micro blogging tool similar to Twitter, so they can tweet what they have learned, and point others towards the wiki if they are

facing similar challenges

Page 29: Rethinking Gagnes Nine Steps of Instructional Design

In addition, we will do a group blog in order to have longer and more in depth

discussions
