Facebook Do’s1. Set up your own profile with a nice photo – consider multiple accounts

(professional vs. personal)2. Include RIT as a network on your profile3. Connect with the RIT Alumni fan page, related pages, alumni you know,

colleagues and friends of RIT. 4. Grow your network using the search feature.5. Create lists of different groups (i.e. RIT, high school, etc…)6. Share and pass along RIT-related information to these constituents7. Create your own fan page or group and encourage friends to join8. Explore available Facebook applications and add them your page/profile9. Create events and invite friends to RSVP10. Share content you think would be helpful to those connected with you.

Facebook Don’t’s

1. Avoid sharing personal information that you don’t want colleagues or alumni to see

2. Un-tag inappropriate photos3. Be respectful and don’t post anything you would

be uncomfortable saying in a public setting – or in front of your boss.

4. Do not post confidential information about students, alumni, staff, etc...

5. Don’t click on suspicious links or friend suspicious people – know your network!

LinkedIn Do’s1. Set up a complete, professional profile with a photo and custom URL 2. Be sure to keep information updated3. Link to RIT as part of your employment information4. Use the find friends and colleagues functions to build up your

network. Search your friends’ networks for connections.5. Join the RIT alumni groups, industry groups, and create your own6. Feed news, information, resources, and job posting into your groups.7. Post helpful content and start discussions such as related articles,

questions, discussion topics – give people a reason to keep coming back!

8. Recommend colleagues past and present – help student workers!

characters or less6. “Re-tweet” RIT links and information distributed by other RIT-related

accounts7. Monitor people talking about you – set up search terms ex: “RIT”8. Know your followers9. Respond – keep the conversation going10. Tweet consistent, interesting content

• Don’t post the same content over and over• Don’t ignore direct messages or replies• Don’t tweet several times in a row – gets

annoying to your followers• Don’t get caught up in the number of

followers; get caught up in the content• Don’t tweet inconsistently – keep it up

network• Don’t be afraid to post content• Use Google Updates to send you content on a specific topics• Don’t be intimidated• Link back to RIT related content often• Respond quickly to friends, followers, and group members• Add your social networking links to your email signature• Find the time - Set aside 15 minutes each day to monitor and

update your social networks• Always be on the look-out for spammers• Don’t be afraid to ask me or anyone else questions
