Rocket Unit
Central Middle School of Science
The Task
Create a pneumatic rocket that will fly a prescribed distance.A= 145 feetB= 125 feetC= 81 feetD= 47 feetF=less than 47 feet
Students launch rockets 3 times
The initial launch- learn how to make a rocket and observe what works.
The second launch- collect detailed data on what variables work the best.
The 3rd launch is for the final grade!!
1st launch instruction
Create a paper rocket how ever you want.
Notice how big the rocket is...
Make observations
What type of rockets flew the farthest? Now make your rockets for the second launch.
2nd launch data collection
After the 2nd launch, students measured, weighed and made observations. We then created a Google Form for students to input their data. Finally students used the information in the Google Spreadsheet to find the best variables.
Isolate the best variables
Isolate the best variables
Isolate the best variables
ResultsThe best weight in second launch was 6-6.9 grams.
The optimum amount of fins was 3.
The dominate length was 12-15 inches.
After viewing the data students made rockets for the final launch. The class average was 130 feet (B grade). Many students received A’s.
The Scientific Process works!!
