Why use Scientific Tools?

• Scientific tools (ex. graduated cylinder,

thermometer, ruler, balance) allow you to

collect accurate data during scientific

investigations.

• Throughout the week, we will be

investigating the proper ways to use these

tools during science lab.

How many of you have

ever baked a cake or

made a batch of

cookies?Well- chances are, you’ve used tools

to MEASURE precise ingredients in

order to make that tasty treat perfect!

By measuring something like flour,

you are measuring VOLUME!!!

What is Volume?

• Volume is the amount of space an

object takes up, whether liquid (ex. Water)

or solid (ex. Sugar)

VolumeSuppose you were doing an experiment with

plants and you wanted to find out how

much water tomato plants need.

Plant A will receive a little bit of water,

Plant B more water, and

Plant C the most water.

How should you measure the water?

• The best way to answer that question is by

using graduated cylinders, measuring

cups, beakers, & droppers to accurately

measure the volume of the water needed.

• Most of these tools are measured in liters

(L) or milliliters (mL).

NOTICE: These tools all have a curved tip-

this makes it easier to pour liquids and solids

Measuring Cups

• Measuring cups and measuring spoons

are used to measure liquids (water, oils,

etc) and solids (sugar, salt, etc).

• They come in different sizes- you’ve

probably seen them if you’ve ever made

brownies or a cake- the ½ cup, the ¼ cup,

and so on.

Beakers and Graduated Cylinders

• These are used to measure liquids

• They range in a variety of sizes depending

on how much volume you need to find.

The Dropper (Pipet)• This tool is used to move very

small amounts of liquid or to

measure volume by counting

drops.

• Hold the dropper upright and

put the tip of the dropper in

the liquid. Gently squeeze the

bulb on the dropper to allow

the water to fill the dropper.

Release the bulb slowly one

drop at a time.

**NEVER put this tool in your mouth**

Measuring Volume

Steps to measure volume:

– Make sure your eyes are

level with the container you

are measuring

– Read the measurement on

the scale.

– Record your data

– You measure solids the

same way you do liquids.

Make sure the top is

smooth before you read

the volume.

Cameron drinks 2 liters of water every day. He

said his doctor told him it was good for him. If he

continues to drink 2 liters of water each day, how

many liters will he drink in one week?

Example:There are 7 days in a week.

If Cameron drinks 2 liters a day, all we need to do is multiply

7 x 2 = 14

Cameron will drink 14 liters of water in one week!
