Welcome to the Lyman Beecher Brooks Library tour. Your research journey is about to begin. This tour will allow you to learn about the physical layout of the building, how to locate materials for assignments and research and the services provided.

Your tour starts on the first floor of the library.

Stop 1: Circulation/Reserve Desk and Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

The Circulation desk is responsible for the circulation and return of both library materials and reserve materials. All patrons wishing to check out materials must present a valid ID.

The Reserve Collection is maintained to provide access to specific class-assigned readings and other materials.

If LBB does not own an item you need for research, teaching or study, you may request it through the Interlibrary Loan service. This free service allows user to borrow materials from other libraries and pick them up at the first-floor circulation desk.

Stop 2: (Office of Information Technology) Information Commons

The Information Commons features over 90 state-of-the-art computers, printers, wireless access, group study rooms, and comfortable seating. There are 4 printers and access to scanning and color printing.

Stop 3: Information Services (Reference Room)

The Reference room has a comprehensive collection of print titles (encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, handbooks, etc.) Other features include: 6 computer workstations, white board, TV, and a quiet reading and study area. The Reference room houses half of the reference collection (A-HC). The other half is located in the current periodicals’ area. The library offers virtual library services.

Stop 4: Educational Resource Room (ERC)

The ERC is located in the Reference Room of the LBB Library. It has a collection of Pre-K-12 materials that support the teacher education programs at Norfolk State University. It is classified and arranged by the Dewey Decimal System, much like a school library. The juvenile or children’s collection is also located in the ERC room.

Stop 5: After walking through the Information Commons area, you will find the current periodicals: newspapers, magazines and journals. Indexes, Abstracts, Marshall Collection and the remainder of the Reference Collection (HD-Z) are also located in this area.

The Marshall Collection is a collection by and about African Americans.

Stop 6: Internet Café

The Perk 700 café features comfortable seating, Starbucks coffee, vending machines, and other snacks. It is designed to give students a comfortable environment which serves as a meeting place for exchange of ideas or just relaxing between classes.

Stop 7: Security Desk

The LBB Library has security during operating hours. The Security desk is located in the rotunda.

Stop 8: Library Media Center

The Library Media Resource Center allows students to check out feature films, laptops, iPods, iPads, digital and video cameras, graph calculators, editing software, projectors, headphones and other multimedia equipment for research purposes.

Stop 9: Copy Here

A self service copier and scanners are located on the first floor across from the Media Service desk. Self service copiers are located on each floor of the library. Copiers accept coins and cash. There is no charge for scanning in the library.  Scans can be saved to a USB drive. Internet connectivity is available to email your scans.

Stop 10: Instructional Support Rooms

There are two instructional classrooms. LBB Library offers a variety of instructional services, which will help educate faculty and students in developing and refining their information literacy skills.

Stop 11: Disability Services/Assistive Technology Lab

This is a service for students who are enrolled with a documented disability. They are able to use specialized hardware and software.

Stop 12: Stairs

Take the stairs to the upper floors in the library. The stairs are located in the rotunda.

Elevators – There are two elevators located just past the circulation desk

Restrooms/water fountains – There are a number of restrooms located throughout the building for your convenience.

Stop 13: Circulating Books A-HV

The library uses the Library of Congress Classification System to organize books on the shelves. Books are located by accessing our online catalog. Call numbers, A-HV are located on the second floor of the library.

Stop 14: Group Study Rooms

These rooms are equipped with monitors and will accommodate students pursuing collaborative class assignments.

Stop 15: Exercise Equipment

The library has equipment on both the second floor and third floor. There is an ancient Greek belief that says, “the mind is central to humanity and that the body serves as a vessel for the mind, and thus the exercise of both is necessary for a balanced life.”

Stop 16: African Art Gallery & Harrison B Wilson Archives

The gallery houses over 450 pieces of museum quality African art. The Archives area houses the historical records of Norfolk State University. You can find yearbooks, theses, dissertations, catalogs, presented papers and more.

Stop 17: Circulating Collection HV-Z

The library uses the Library of Congress Classification System to organize books on the shelves. Books are located by accessing our online catalog. Call numbers, HV-Z are located on the third floor of the library.

Stop 18: Graduate Research Room

This room offers a quiet area for individual study for twenty graduate students.

Stop 19: Bound Journals

These are magazines and journals whose previous issues have been bound together into book form, called "bound periodicals". These are a compilation of the single, unbound issues in the Periodicals Room.

Stop 20: Study Area

LBB Library has a variety of study areas. There are spaces for quiet study, as well as areas for those who need to work with groups.

Stop 21: Honors College

This department serves as the organizing entity for honors education at Norfolk State University.

Stop 22: Office of Dean/Library Administration

The Office of the Dean of Library Administration is responsible for the overall management and administration of the LBB Library.

Stop 23: School of Extended Learning

This office coordinates and supports services for the comprehensive infusion of technology. The services include blackboard support, distance learning, blending learning and face-to-face instructional technology.

LIBRARY INFORMATION

• The url to the library’s website is http://library.nsu.edu/

• Books in the library are arranged using the Library of Congress Classification System.

• The Children's Collection is arranged using the Dewey Decimal System.

• The library subscribes to over 190 databases that feature both electronic journals and books that are useful in scholarly research.

• Databases can be accessed in the library and from home.

• To access databases from home or off campus, use MyNSU portal. MyNSU connects students, faculty and staff to information and systems from one point of entry. Colleague, Spartan Self Service, NSU Webmail and Blackboard are all accessible via MyNSU.

• The library is open 7 days a week with the exception of holidays and service areas in which the hours varies.

• Librarians are available to assist you with your research.
