Contacting ‘Q Music Magazine’.Relationship with the Magazine and Consumers- Before I carried out my research for Q magazine, I decided to contact the

publishers of Q magazine. I did this so that I could gather any useful information about my magazine of inspiration so that it comes in use when creating my own magazine.

I did not get a response from them, so I decided to research some information for myself, I did this by using Bauer Media’s website itself, as well using Q music magazine website which proved to be very helpful.

Bauer Media Publishing Group.

About Bauer Media- Bauer media group is a European-based media publishing company, based in Germany. Bauer

Media manages around 600 magazines over 400 digital based products, as well as 50 radio and TV stations based around the world. Bauer media originally started back in 2nd January 1875 when Ludolph Bauer created a printing house for business cards, which was based in Hamburg, Germany. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/analysis-and-features/a-closer-look-at-the-bauer-media-family-8207941.html

Products they Provide- Today Bauer media currently offers around over 500 magazines, in 15 different countries, these

magazines can be viewed from a range of different platforms, such as Online, TV, and radio stations. They focus on different magazines such as Heat, Empire, and Yours as well as a range of different ones. As well as this they also focus on publishing music magazines such as one of their most familiar ones Q Music Magazine, as well as well-known magazines like Kerrang! And Mojo. http://www.bauer.co.uk/history

The Connotations of ‘We think Popular’ implies to the audience that know what factors need to into a good magazine, in order for it to be popular. The use of the verbal code “popular” connotes that Bauer media creates magazines which everyone will be interested in and that they will be ‘popular’ with their audiences. By Bauer thinking this it implies that they are confident with the content that they are realizing and that they feel that it will be a good success when competing against other magazine publishers.

Ideology:“Bauer Media Group is in a unique position to be able to deliver ground-breaking consumer insight to media professional, having more market leading brands across a wider breadth of market than any other media owner.”- Bauer Media Group, 2014This demonstrates how to the consumers/readers they Bauer have a high expectation for their magazines, and that they insure that they are of a high standard always, in order for the company to remain successful. They do this by knowing that they are one of the highest leading brands within the industry.

Page 7: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Format • The main house styles of Q magazines are most of the covers have a light

background, and the image of the artist is normally dark or they are wearing dark clothes, by having the artist in dark clothing or the image being dark against a light background makes the artist stand out. By doing this it makes the reader be drawn to the image of the artist first more than the word. Although, on the other hand if the reader is being drawn to the photo first of the artist and they like the artist this may make them read the words around the image.

• Format- The length of Q magazine is 28.5cm, the width of Q magazine is 21cm.• Language- The language used on the cover of the magazine are mainly bold

words, such as ‘breaking BAD’ and ‘ROCK STAR'. These verbal codes would mainly appeal to the audience such as men, but this the words are quite bold statement words whereas this wouldn't appeal as much to a woman. Therefore this may mean the magazines are a lot more popular therefore more people are buying them making high profits for shops selling them.

• Q magazine main house colou

Format Continued. The content inside Q Music Magazine includes features like stories or interviews, which have been

cover in their contents page. They also contain reviews on things like New Albums and concerts. Within the magazine they talk about artists or bands which is typically their main feature, which would

appeal to Q readers as if they see an artist or band featured which they have an interest in this would then make them particularly interested in the magazine issue.

At the back on Q magazine they have a section called “Q Mail” and several pages of advertisements. Some of the advertisements include music lessons, anything you wish to sell they will advertise it

inside the magazine. They also advertise artists or bands, they do this such as advertising an artists new album which has

just been released, it important that they include as much content as possible to keep the reader interested although they don’t want to include lots of writing as this might not be as visually appealing.

Within their contents page they have a similar style throughout the whole magazine, such as having images on the front cover of artists or bands shows the importance of these artists and also connotes how they maybe the main feature in this particular issue of Q.

The layout of Qs magazines are particularly simply but effective, doing this means its a lot easier for the reader to read as well as this a simple layout means that readers will be able to see clearly what is featured in the magazine.

The connotations of the Strapline of Q magazine “The UK’s Biggest Music Magazine” the connotations of this is that Q are showing authority, and confidence within themselves as they are referring to their magazine being the best music magazine in the UK.

This could also refer to a competitive side of Q Magazine, when competing against other popular music magazines, and show how they want their magazine to be the most popular.

Production Process.Published- Q magazine is published by a publishing company called Bauer Media group. Bauer media group are a well-known publishing company, which is privately owned publishing group. Bauer are a worldwide publishing group which offers over 300 magazines in 15 different countries. Some of the main shops Bauer Media publish to are places like Whsmith, Tesco as well as this you can also buy Q magazines online such as Amazon and EBay. Readership-Compared to other magazines such as Mojo, and Kerrang Q has one of the second highest readerships out of all the popular music magazines out there. Page 11: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Production Process.Date of publication-The first things is to set a date when the magazine is going to be published. By this is when the magazine will be released to the public. Once this date has been finalized the publishing companies would have to work out a schedule therefore from working out the schedule they will have to make sure that they stick to this deadline in order for the magazine to get completed and published in time.Managing the schedule-This is the most important step as the publishing company need to make sure that they time themselves well and that they stick to the time schedule in order to be successful with their magazine. The publishing company should give themselves enough time in case anything goes wrong so that they can fix their mistakes.Editorial and budgetary decision-This next step happens within the production process of the magazine. By this the editorial decisions involve coming up with what topic will be covered in the issue of the magazine, within this as well the team talk about various content that will make up the main content of the magazine. As well as this they look how much money they have in order to produce this magazine and if they need to budget themselves in any way.

Page 12: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Production Process.Content acquisition-This is the most important process as this determines what is in the magazine and without this there would be a magazine. The are two main ways in which content can me gathered and by this is through in house staff writers that are ordered to write on topics that are specific to the magazine, during this stage the artwork in the magazine and graphics are worked on. The artwork is over viewed as the illustrations and pictures that are going to be put into the magazine.Sub-editing-Sub-editing focuses on one major thing, which is the quality control. If the publishing company is big enough then they are able to have a sub-editor, if there is no sub-editor then the main editor will do this job which involves important things like;Checking of the accuracy of all facts and information in the article.Making sure that the words are spelt properly.Making sure that the grammar and punctuation are use correctly.

Making sure that all the articles follow the house style throughout.

Page 13: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Production Process.Page layout-In large publishing companies there are teams responsible for the pay layout. Their job is to work on the page layout, and that they come up together with ideas in order to make the magazine. In working on the magazine they use a programme in order to work on the layout called Desk-top publishing programs such as InDesign or PageMaker.Proofreading- Once the page layout stage is done, the next stage is proofreading, by this the editorial department will print out a hardcopy of the magazine for reading through it and to find anything which may be incorrect. By printing a hardcopy it is a lot easier to proofread rather than a soft-copy. Any mistakes which are spotted are easily corrected on the DTP file, the editorial team keeps proof-reading until they member is happy with the magazines content.File emailed to printer-After proof-reading the file containing the magazine is send to the printing company. But before printing the company prints the hundreds or thousands of copies requested by the publishing company, the publishing company then gets sent these copies which then get proof-read again by the editorial department.

Page 14: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Production Process.Distribution-This is the last stage of the entire process, the printing company have finished with the printing of the magazine they will package them and send them to a warehouse near by, from the warehouse they are then distributed to the shops and then sold to the public.

Here I have emailed Bauer media group, asking them to explain to me the production process of their magazine ‘Q’, right from planning the magazine to selling it to the public.

Page 15: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Production Process-Follow Up.

Here, these screenshots show the two emails I have sent to Bauer Media Group, asking for them to explain to me the production process of one of their magazines “Q”.I the first screenshot above shows my first email I sent them, as I didn't’t get a response I then decided to forward the email again, asking them to read my email again regarding my question I previously asked.

Page 16: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Social Media and Online. As well as buying a hard copy of Q magazine in hand you can also subscribe

to a monthly payment each month by this you will receive copies of Q magazine each month on Q website you can subscribe to their deal for £32.00 for 12 copies of Q magazine.

Web page Analysis; Bauer publishing webpage format I very well laded out by this, there are

clear drop down menus which allow you to click on and go to other parts of the web page they also have picture list of all the radio or artists that feature in some of the UK magazines. There is a consistent colour scheme, which is of colours that work together, but aren’t bright colours like pinks and yellows etc. as it is attracting an older audience and not a young audience. There is more emphasis on the image, which therefor aim for it to stand out against the white background.

Q Readership and Online. Here is evidence of cross convergence media, through many forms of

social media forms. Promoting or advertising Q music magazine through these forms of social media, allows readers to interact with the magazine itself as well as speaking their opinion about the magazine or if they have any questions, they can contact the magazine team via twitter, Facebook ect.

Through my research I have found that Q music magazine use “above the line marketing” which is used to give out information to a mass audience or promote music magazine use viral marketing to advertise their magazine, by this from my research I have found that they have their own Twitter Page, their own Facebook Page as well as their own YouTube Chanel, each one of these accounts has many people accessing it such as on their YouTube Chanel they have 4,167 subscribers. As well on their Twitter Page they have 127K followers, as well lastly on their Facebook Page they have 121,017 people who have liked their page, therefore this conveys how using social marketing is a affective way of reaching out to their consumers.

Circulation Figures. As, you can see by the table, as well as the pie chart, that in the year of 2011 Qs music magazines readership circulation was at its highest. Although, as the years have gone on you can clearly see that the readership has gone down, this could be caused by factors such as better and more popular music magazines coming out, resulting in people not buying Q.Or people tend to use social media and their phones more if they want to find out something which is linked with music. Lastly, another factor could be online apps where readers are able to read their magazine on their phone rather than a physical magazine copy.

Brand Extensions-Readership Between the Magazine and Audience.

Q magazine in the last few years has released an ipad edition which was made available for readers in 2012, this was created as due to technology becoming a lot more popular Q decided to make a digital copy which includes features such as full magazine content, behind-the-scenes, footage as well as short video and audio clips.

This ipad edition was create via Bauer Media’s technology company, which means that companies who wish to include any form of advertisement within the ipad addition are able to contribute.

Page 23: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Advertising to Consumers: Print Based Examples, and TV Advert.

Ways in which Q Music Magazine, is advertised is via social media, they have accounts on Twitter and Facebook. This is a good way of advertising their magazine as social media has such as mass audience, therefore consumers are able to access information for the magazine easily. Advertising to such as mass audience allows the magazine to become more popular, as well consumers are able to tweet Q magazine directly creating a relationship with their readers.TV Advert: Not only do Q magazine use print based ways to advertise their magazine they also have their own YouTube Chanel which consists of mainly interviews with popular artists which have been featured in their magazine at some point, they also add on clips which are around a minute and a half of all acts which have been nominated for the Q music awards, they also include clips from the winners.Within their YouTube Chanel they have a 4,167 subscribers to their channel this allows people who have subscribed to their channel to receive notification each time they upload a new video.

Page 24: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Q Website.Technological convergence:Q magazine has technical convergence on their homepage, this is where they advertise their social media products like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook ect.

Subscription Offers:On Qs homepage, they have a navigation bar where it links to where their readers are able to subscribe to their magazine subscription.

Navigation Bar:On the navigation bar it has drop downs like, the latest issue, interviews, videos and track of the day. This is where readers are able to click on certain things, what they are interested in this is where readers can be more specific in their choices.

Page 25: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Convergent Technology:There is convergent technology in Q website, this is evident in the navigation bar where readers are able to not only read a copy of the magazine but they are also able to watch interviews, ect this creates a visual relationship with the reader as they maybe more interested in watching something rather than read something. They have a image of George Michael paying

tribute to him, this would create empathy with the readers of Q as if there are some George Michael fans then they are likely to read this as they would be interested in this article.

Page 26: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Associated Products.Bauer media are linked to broadcasting on the radio and TV

as well as mobile and online products. Some of their radios which they feature on is Kerrang!,

Magic, Absolute, and Kiss. Some of their TV stations are Heat,Kerrang!, Kiss and

Magic, their mobile and online consists of their magazines and their radio companies.

Page 27: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Marketing and Advertisement. A lot of the advertising Q magazine does is full page advertising. The products that they

advertise are mainly linked with music, and are genially of the same genre of music. As well as this the adverts are mostly about new albums which are coming out or have

come out. One album that they featured was The Beatles who were very popular in that anyone who was reading was of an older generation, and that maybe interested in buying the magazine.

The types of products which are advertised in their magazines are things like festivals particularly rock festivals, as well as artists albums.

The type of products which are advertised in Q magazine reflect on the type of readers, which links in with De Saussure’s semiotics ideology which ‘signifies’ the type of people who will read Q magazine based on the band being promoted as they would possess mass appeal amongst the readers.

Page 28: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Marketing (Continued) Q magazine don’t usually

have lots of adverts, however they have mainly advertised their magazine through social media such as their own Facebook, Twitter and YouTube Page.

• As you can see on their YouTube Channel they have an advert which is 30 seconds long which is mainly the length of most of their adverts the main reason for only having an advert which is long is that they don’t want to include something which is too long as people might loose interest and not want it anymore

• Additionally, to this when showing what artist they are talking about they show a small clip of the artist and their music doing this makes it very visual for the reader, and almost makes them more interested in what they are watching.

Page 29: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Codes and Conventions-Magazine Front Cover Analysis.Logo-One of the main and most important parts of Q magazine is the logo. I think this is the most important part of the magazine because this depicts Q magazines apart from everyone because of their bold logo. I will repeat this in my magazine as I was inspired by Q music magazine.Puff promotion- Having the verbal code ‘plus’ in red font means that the reader will be drawn to it as it stands out against the dark background. Although, this also gives an insight as to what is inside the magazine as by giving the reader an added bonus. I will repeat this in my magazine as it would draw the reader in to my magazine as well as appealing to the target audience.

Cover lines- I will include cover lines in my magazine by having a variation of different fonts draws the readers eyes to all different parts of the magazine. Having a variation of fonts provides different bits of content to the reader as well as this it appeals to the reader by including other artists names. This is called ‘start appeal’

Page 30: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Codes and Conventions-Front Cover Analysis.

Main picture- By having the main picture in the center of the magazine taking up most of the room on the front cover, draws people into the magazine as a result of this they may buy the magazine increasing the amount of sales and popularity. Not only that but having an up to date artist on the cover may also make people buy the magazine as they are possibly seeing one of their favorite artists on the magazine.

Strapline-The strapline of this Q magazine Reads ‘Discover great music'. The connotes to inspiring thoughts such as, Q Are trying to persuade the readers to readThe magazine. As well as this by having the word ‘Great’ suggests the music talked about in this magazine is better than any other music.

House Colours-All the house colors are all very neutral and basic, by having these colors neutral and plain make the artist such as Tinie tempah stand out against the light/neutral background.

Autograph-Having Tinie Tempah's autography on the front cover in white stands out against the dark colors on Tinie Tempah such as his sunglasses. This could implies that the magazine is a lot more personal to the buyer.

Page 31: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Codes and Conventions-Front Cover Continued.Masthead-The iconic red and white logo largely displayed on the front cover would also draw people into buying the magazine as it contrasts against the white background, and the lighter colors on the front cover. As well as having the logo so large in the corner of the page would also stand out as people may recognize the logo.

Connotations-The main connotations Of Q link to the theme of the magazine such as ‘queue’ like queue the music, this relates to the theme and links to the types of music in the magazine.

Date-issue-price; The date that the magazine was released on was November 201 and selling at a price of £3.99.

Inspiring slogan:’ Discover Great Music’

Page 32: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Double Page Spread Analysis.

Background Features-One feature of this page is close up shot of the artist draws the reader in more as their attention of focused on the artist. Having the contrast high in the main picture as well as the background, draws attention to the background and makes the most important features stand out such as ‘Big Ben’. Having Humor within the magazine would draw more readers to it. By having a a personal quote from the artists himself, which would therefore make it a lot more personal and direct. Furthermore by adding humor into the quote makes it seem less serious and as if the artist is having a laugh with the reader.

Drop Capital: The drop capital is the large letter starting of the article. This tells the reader that the beginning of the article starts there. The drop capital is bright red which links to the contents page and the front cover.

Position of objects - Having the artist standing in front of the London skyline, whilst having is guitar next to him adds to the effect that he's just a regular person growing up in a normal city, which therefore could inspire people to follow in him footsteps.

Main text - Having the large piece of text to the side of the photo allows readers to swap from looking at the picture to reading through the text which is related to the artist. As well as this I have realized d that there is only one man picture this could be due to the fact that they want to want the reader to focus on only one image, and by the image being so detailed and important by adding others may make it overcrowded.

Page 33: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Double Page Spread Analysis.Positioning of the page-I was inspired by this page when making my magazine, I liked the way the text was to one side and the multiple photos were on the other side, I think this is a good idea as it allows the reader to refer back to the images while reading.

Drop Capital-When making my magazine I am going to consider using as large capital letter during the interview, I think this will had to the effect of the magazine as well as it will be eye-catching to the reader when they are flicking through the magazine.

Consistently of logo- I have decided that throughout my magazine I will keep my logo in the left hand corner I have decided to do this as my logo soon with become rememberble to the readers, as well as when they are in a magazine shop they will be able to remember my logo.

Stand First: Q magazine have a stand first which grabs the readers attention, and makes them interested in then rest of the interview.

Differentiated Questions and Answers: This is highlighted in the interview where the questions being asked to ‘Motley Crue’ are highlighted in red, as well as this the answers are in black bold so that they stand out clearly against the questions.

Page 34: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Contents page.

Here is a contents page for Q Music Magazine, the design of this contents page is quite simple, although it is very neat and organized, which makes it easier for the readers to read. There is a clear color scheme, with the colors black, red, grey and white which adds to how the page looks very sophisticated and professional. The page numbers are colored red which makes them stand out. They also have bold titles which makes them stand out even more.Underneath each page number there is a sort description of what can be found under that page, this is a good thing to do as it gives the reader an small insight as to what they can expect in this issue of Q Music Magazine. The page is split up into 5 main sections: The Title, a list of main features, the main story, the regular parts of the magazine that appear each month, and the part of the magazine which is for reviews, splitting it up into sections makes it more organized and easier to read.

Page 35: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Lauguage inside in the Magazine. The content inside Q Music Magazine includes features like stories or interviews,

which have been cover in their contents page. They also contain reviews on things like New Albums and concerts.

Within the magazine they talk about artists or bands which is typically their main feature, which would appeal to Q readers as if they see an artist or band featured which they have an interest in this would then make them particularly interested in the magazine issue.

At the back on Q magazine they have a section called “Q Mail” and several pages of advertisements.

The language used on the cover of the magazine are mainly bold words, such as ‘breaking BAD’ and ‘ROCK STAR'. Genre-Free Sheet. Free Sheet:Free Sheet newspapers are newspapers which are distributed with no charge, although they make a large amount of revenue this is due to the large amount of advertising they do within their newspapers. Free sheet newspapers are usually found in urban areas, and are handed out for free or put inside another newspaper. Free sheets first started in the 1880s in Germany and ere distributed normally around 2 times a week, within the town of Lubeck. One popular and well-known free sheet is the Metro, the metro originated in the 1995s as a free sheet which came out daily, which were then handed out on public transport in Stockholm, Sweden. After this the free sheet began selling in shops and on the market of many European countries, including the UK.The Metro currently has 13 editions and combined readership of 1.3 million just within the UK.

Page 39: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Genre-Red Top Tabloid. Red top tabloid newspapers are usually named this because

of they tend to have a distinctive bright red masthead. A tabloid is usually measures 11 x 17 inches and consists of five columns across, this is much narrower then a broadsheet newspaper, this is because tabloids are much smaller therefore the content is reduced in length.

The writing style within these newspapers are known as tabloid journalism, within this they sensationalize certain stories, gossip and sports columns.

They have columns which are sensationalize by this they tend to include stories which aren’t completely accurate. The typically price of these newspapers is around 80p, this is because there is large amounts of advertisement and promotional material. Source: http://www.newspapers.co.uk/newspaper-types-and-formats/

Page 40: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Broadsheets. Broadsheets are daily newspapers, these are clearly

shown by their large paper size. The content within the magazine is typically of high standard, and includes content from high journalists. Therefore the type of people in which would typically read these types of newspapers are more intellectual people, this is due to the large amount of content within the magazine, as well as this typically older and more nature people would read ths. Also in comparison to newspapers like the Sun, Broadsheet news papers are less sensationalized in their content.

Compared to Red Top tabloid newspapers Broadsheets, contain more content on their front covers, and our typically contain more detail. The main reasons as to why Broadsheets contain more content on their pages is due to there not being as much advertising within the newspaper compared to Red Top Tabloids.

News Selection.‘Soft News’- ‘Personality’:when it comes to the news they contain lots of ‘visual imperatives’ by this they contain lots of pictures to help sell the story. News Selection- within the newspapers such as ‘The Sun’ they tend to specify their content in news about celebrity's/gossip, they tend to do this as its more likely to attract readers, within this they also sensationalize their information about a particular, story as they want to attract more readers. Although, they have to be aware of the ‘Editors Code of Practice’ as they

need to insure that they aren't releasing any false information. Hard News: Hard news is the kind of fast-paced news that usually appears on the front page of newspapers. Stories that fall under the umbrella of hard news often deal with topics like business, politics and international news. Hard news and soft news are considered the two major types of news stories available.

Page 43: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Red Top Tabloid- The Sun. Red Top Tabloid’s writing style within these papers are commonly

known as tabloid journalism, within this there is particular emphasis to crime stories, astrology, gossip columns and sports stars. Additionally there are elements of sensationalism as not all information that is given is completely accurate. For Example The Sun Newspaper.

There is a stereotype behind who reads these types of newspapers such as “The White Van Man” this stereotype was given as The Sun is commonly read by men out at work, and tend to drive a van for example Builders.

‘Red Top Tabloid’ news selection is often stereotyped as soft news this is where they would chose a piece which will have the most impact on the reader.

Page 44: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

News Corporation.

News Corporation are known for publishing lots of ‘Red Top Tabloid’ newspapers, such as ‘The Sun’ as well as ‘The Sunday Times’.

They are typically known for publishing newspapers, which come under the category ‘Red Top Tabloid News’.Red Top Tabloid’s writing style within these papers are commonly known as tabloid journalism, within this there is particular emphasis to crime stories, astrology, gossip columns and sports stars. Additionally there are elements of sensationalism as not all information that is given is completely accurate.

They include content inside the newspaper which would appeal to their target audience, they use sensationalism doing this attracts the reader in to read that particular story, and doing this help sells the story the readers more compared to other stories.

Codes and Conventions-Newspaper-Front Cover. Masthead:

Lead Story:

Display Advert:

The purpose of the masthead is to establish the logo ’The Sun’ the color of the bright red background can connote that it is off high importance, or that they want their logo to stand out against others.

The lead story reads “The Lying Squad”. The connotations of this are that this is a sensationalized story in that it may have been changed, in order for readers to be more interested in the story.

The display advert coveys, that you are able to win “two free tickets” including this with the newspapers front cover would attract mainly adults therefore they are able to use these tickets for families day outs, having the front in large text draws the reader in, catches their eye.

Page 46: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Codes and Conventions-Newspaper-Front Cover.

Secondary Lead-The secondary lead in this newspaper cover is the story about Beyoncé’ this also links in with the star appeals as if people take an interest in Beyoncé they are likely to want to read this story.

Puff Promotion-In this cover the ‘Puff Promotion’ is the 2 free tickets worth £95, which is being advertised on the front cover, doing this would get people to by the newspaper more if they are advertising something where people are able to save money.

News Values- The news values for this front cover would be ‘personality’ driven this is because it is a story which is being centered around a particular person in this case Beyoncé, and the riot squad.

Page 47: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Conventions of Newspaper-Double Page Spread.

Main Image: The connotations of the main images is to draw readers, and to show of high importance. Secondly the image focuses on the main story which is about Madeline McCann, which is of a serious matter.

Opening Invitation: This is the start of the article, the first sentence is in bold to grab the readers attention, and makes them want to read on.

News Values: this article links in with the news value “Currency” this is because it is portraying a story about a young child being adducted, as this would affect certain readers as well as running on for a long period of time therefore readers are able to keep up to date with the story.

Page 48: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Conventions of Newspaper-Double Page Spread.

Advertising other products: Here is evidence of other products such as a JLS concert.

Page Number and Date: These are in the top of the left hand corners of the page, this is useful as people turn the pages by using the top corners, as well as this The Sun’s logo is kept next to the page number which is useful and it is demonstrating brand awareness.

Other Stories: Other smaller stories on the double page, which is also linked to the main story in some way as it may be on a similar story.

Page 49: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Thorpe Park Partnership with The Sun- Relationship between the advertiser and the publisher. On the front page of the magazine there is a

section near the masthead, promoting “2 free tickets” to Thorpe Park. Thorpe Park have partnered with The Sun, in order to promote free tickets enticing people to come to Thorpe park.

This is a positive way of advertising tickets, as generally the people who are to read newspapers are older people who are working, therefore these people tend to have children so therefore they are likely to come across a voucher.

Advertising vouchers via the sun newspaper provides Thorpe Park with popularity with their lower prices.

News Values- Galtung & Ruge.

News Values. In 1965, media researchers Galtung & Ruge analyzed international news stories to find out what factors they had in common, and what factors placed them at the top of the news agenda worldwide

Reference: http://mediaknowall.com/gcse/news/news.php?pageID=values

Page 51: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

News Values- Galtung & Ruge.News Values Description.

Negativity. Bad news - involving death, tragedy, bankruptcy, violence, damage, natural disasters, political upheaval or simply extreme weather conditions - is always rated above 'positive' stories (royal weddings, celebrations etc)

Closeness to Home (proximity). Audiences supposedly relate more to stories that are close to them geographically, or involve people from their country, or those that are reported that way(eg '12 Hong Kongers aboard Australia Crash Plane'). News gatekeepers must consider carefully how meaningful a story will be to their particular audience

Recency. Newspapers are very competitive about breaking news - about revealing stories as they happen. 24 hour news channels such as CNN and BBC World also rate this value very highly. However, as we have seen with the events of September 11, stories may take a while to develop, and become coherent, so recency is not always the best value to rate.

Currency. his is almost opposite to recency, in that stories that have been in the public eye for some time already are deemed valuable. Therefore a story - for instance about the abduction and murder of a child - may run for weeks and weeks, even if nothing new really happens.

Personality Stories that Centre around a particular person, because they can be presented from a 'human interest' angle, are beloved of newspapers, particularly if they involve a well-known person

http://mediaknowall.com/gcse/news/news.php?pageID=values

Page 52: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

News Values- Galtung & Ruge. For the news values for Galtung & Ruge, there are a few

examples in which fall into this theory, such as Mass Appeal this is due to that for each story that The Sun covers a particular story would affect some of the readers in some way whether this is them being able to understand the situation of the story or the fact that they are able to relate in some way to the story therefore if this affects one person it is likely that it will affect a number of people.

This then also links in with the idea of Personality this is due to many of the stories in The Sun mainly being about TV shows/gossip as well as Sport, then when it comes to these particular articles The Sun known that readers today like to keep up with day to day gossip and what is going on, on TV or Sport therefore to attract and appeal to the readers more they include lots of images which would get readers involved more and make them interested and look at the article more.

Lastly, news values would also cover stories which have a negative affect on readers whether this is relating stories to involving death, violence or natural disasters ect. This would also affect readers as they would feel sympathy for the person involved in the story, this also conveys how some readers may wish to read on about the negative story.

The Sun - MarketingAs you can see The Sun have many forms of E-media products, and one of these is their own YouTube Chanel, The Suns YouTube consist of 14 plus subscribes. The Sun is in synergy with social media because their consumers can find them on Facebook, Twitter. They do this by advertising on other forms of social media like their Twitter page that they have other social media pages like Facebook by including a link in their bio on Twitter, they also include a direct link to their website as well. Readers are then able to download The Sun’s online app via the App Store or The game store for android phones.Additionally, by creating an app this could influence more younger readers to begin to read The Sun.Using an App is a makes The Sun become more modern, by using social media and apps, the main reason behind creating an app is because many people now have iPhones, and therefore consumers will download the app.

Page 54: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Advertised Products-Relationship Between the Advertiser and Publisher.

This advertisement is place around the beginning of the newspaper in this case their would be a relationship with the advertiser and the publisher this is because The Sun and Asda aren't linked in anyway. This is a good way of promoting a brand like Asda, especially because the majority of people who read newspapers are adults, therefore they may be interested in things like this that they come across in day to day life.

The connotations of this advertisement is in this particular advertisement Asda are advertising two products, therefore this catches the eyes of the reader as if they aren't as interested in one of the products they may be interested in the other, this is where Asda are thinking about their target audience and the types of products people may want to buy doing this time.

Page 55: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Advertised Products:Relationship Between the Advertiser and Publisher

Displaying actual images of the products themselves, shows the reader what the product is like therefore, is more likely to purchase the product if they see it more.

Another reason why The Sun have possibly chosen to work with Asda in advertising their products is due to the target audience and the people likely to read The Sun Newspaper. As The Sun is a relatively cheap newspaper, and mostly read by men, the readers of this tend to be off a lower working class as even though they are in a job, they wouldn't’t spend a lot of money on a newspaper compared to people who are of a higher working class. Therefore this then links to the advertisement of Asda inside The Sun, Asda is a cheap affordable food store, therefore people of a lower class are more likely to shop in Asda rather than more expensive places such as Waitrose therefore an Asda advert would appeal to them more, this therefore reflects the economic status of ‘The Sun’s’ readership.

The Sun Newspaper

As you can see from my findings I have found out how many females read The Sun Newspaper, and how many males read the newspaper. Evident within the chart, is demonstrates how the percentage of female readers is lower compared to males. The Sun has 42% of readers being females, compared to 58% of readers being males. Although, once I have found this research out, and looked more into it I would have thought the the male readers would have been a lot higher than 58% this is due to stereotypically seeing males reading the newspapers while on their commute to work as well as throughout the day.

Demographics of The Sun.

As seen in this screenshot, I have found evidence of what the typically age range is for The Sun newspaper. As you can see the largest age range is 65+ with 22% of readers being 65 or over. The youngest of readers are ages 15-24 years old, with only 12% of people in reading the sun in this category.Through my findings I think that the largest readership is ages 65+ this is because today younger people are on their phone a lot more, compared to older people. This is due to social media, and technology becoming more popular especially with the younger generation.

Page 59: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Demographics of The Sun- Continued.

Hartley Theory: Age the typically age range for The Sun Newspaper is around ages 30+-65+, this is due to

the younger generation will use social media and are more interested in gossip compared to the older generation where they would be more interested in everyday news, for example politics. As, for gender it is commonly known to see a male reading a newspaper especially ‘The Sun’ (White Van Man Stereotype).Although, you still would get a few females reader the newspaper. When it comes to class readers of The Sun would fit into the category C2 and D this is because of the stereotype white van man, the readers are likely to be semi-skilled works and manual works such as plumbers and builders.

Katz Theory: ‘The Sun’ would partly inform readers and educate the readers about what is

currently going on in specific stories, The Sun Newspaper would be be “surveillance” because some people may reader the newspaper to continue with certain stories they may be interested in.

Maslow Hierarchy of Needs: Readers of The Sun Newspaper would be “Explorers” this is because they are

driven by social change, this could be following in the footsteps of someone they have seen featured in The Sun for example a celebrity or this could link to social media where they are more interested in by the change of social media and how popular it is that they find out their gossip and news on there.

IPSO When it comes to legal issues. There is a code of practice which editors have to follow,

additionally here are some which newspapers/magazines will have to follow and that I would as well during the production of my own magazine:

Clause 1: ‘Accuracy: The press are not allowed to publish any inaccurate or misleading information or pictures'

will be applying this to my magazine as I will be ensuring that I don’t not include any sensationalized information.

If this happens then i/the press must correct it as quickly as possible as well as publishing an apology to the readers and the person involved.

The publication must have a fair and accurate report for the action of defamation unless an agree settlement is published or agreed otherwise.

Clause 12: ‘Discrimination:’ The press/myself must not publish anything which is prejudicial to an individual's

race, colour, religion, gender sexual orientation or any mental or physical ability. It must always be avoidable unless it is relevant to the story.Clause 14- ‘Confidential Sources’: All journalists have a moral accountability to protect any confidential sources of information.

Legal and Ethical Issues- ‘The Sun Newspaper’. Sensationalism- ‘Accuracy’ Sensationalism is a type of editorial bias in mass media in which events and topics in news

stories and pieces are overhyped to present biased impressions on events, which may cause a manipulation to the truth of a story.

The Sun Newspaper have been guilty of Sensationalizing particular stories, this is evident in one particular headline where The Sun wrote “1,200 killed by mental patients” this headline caused a lot of controversy with people, as people took to social media saying that there is no such thing as ‘mental patients’. There are patients with mental health problems – which range from depression to paranoid schizophrenia – but there are no ‘mental patients’.

This caused a lot of problems with people as The Sun were sensationalising the story to make people more interested in the story.

People began taking to social media fighting back against this headline, people wrote facts online stating that ‘The majority of Crimes or any violence, happen with people who don’t suffer from any mental illness, therefore The Sun are using ‘inaccurate’ information for this story.

They also began to write things such as “People who suffer with an mental illness, are more harmful to themselves, rather than other people” in this people began to justify why The Sun are wrong in what they are saying, and that The Sun are dishonestly sensualising their stories.

Press Complaints Commission. The Sun breached the Editors’ Code by publishing a “significantly misleading” front page headlined “1 in 5 Brit Muslims’ sympathy for jihadis”.The paper was ordered to publish a critical adjudication by the Independent Press Standards Organisation no further back than page five. A Times story headlined “One in five British Muslims has sympathy for Isis" was also found to be inaccurate. But no further action was ordered against The Times because it had already published a correction.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-35903066 IPSO received over 3000 complaints over this particular

headline, even though an IPSO spokesman said that ‘The newspaper had provided various interpretations of the poll result which conflated important distinctions between those travelling to Syria and those already fighting in Syria; between 'sympathy' for these individuals and 'support for their actions; and between individuals attracted by the ideology of Isis, and the ideology of Isis itself’

The complaints committee deemed that the newspaper did not taken appropriate care with this story, and that they were breaching as this story was signifantly misleading and breeching ‘Clause 1’ of ‘Accuracy’.

Page 63: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Legal and Ethical Issues.Intellectual property- Is Having the right type of intellectual property protection helps you to stop people stealing or copying. This applies to my magazine as I will be able to stop anyone from trying to steal any of my information images etc., and say it is their own, this is really important that The Sun have this as they want to ensure that people aren't able to steal there logo or any information that they put out there.https://www.gov.uk/intellectual-property-an-overview

The Sun also have to taken into consideration the types of stories that they put out there so that they aren't offending people, this was evident when The Sun realised a story over Gypsy Travellers, this is whenThe Sun launched its campaign to "stamp" on illegal camps The paper's front page and inside story on prompted one travelers group to lodge a complaint with the Press Complaints Commission (PCC).

The Sun released a copy of the newspaper with a image as the front cover, as the travelers caravans being on fire, and there being riots between the traveler community and the police the main headline read “Meet your neighbors… Thanks to John Prescot”.

The report was misleading, discriminatory and likely to incite racial hatred against travelers and Gypsies, said the Gypsy and Traveler. Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott's announcement that all councils must now take account of travelers' needs in their local housing plans, and identify land for them to buy and develop.

Papers such as the Sun and Daily Mail accused the government of treating travelers more favorably than the rest of the population.

E-Media Platform Promotion. ‘The Sun’ use many different forms of media platforms to promote their newspaper,

in particular through e-media products such as social media sites Facebook,Twiiter and video sharing in the form of YouTube.

You can clearly see that each of these social media forms there is evidence of advertising, they update readers on the latest news stories and popular information.

Using social media platforms, this gives the readers the opportunities to interact with ‘The Sun’ therefore they are able to speak their opinions through the comment sections on YouTube, as well as Tweeting on their Twitter pages, which allows them to get involved in new stories and issues.

On The Suns YouTube Channel readers are able to subscribe to ‘The Sun’s’ YouTube channel which allows them to get regular updates, when they upload as well as being able to comment and like videos which later on increases their readership.

Sun TV advert.

Here is an TV Advert for ‘The Sun’ Newspaper, in this advert it demonstrates the different types of people who read The Sun Newspaper, as well as this it also says what type of content is inside ‘The Sun’ Newspaper such as gossip stories, things to do with the government, holidays ect.

As well as this it says that “ whatever gets you going, get involved” This conveys how they want everyone to read ‘The Sun’, such as whatever you like reading read ‘The Sun’, and get involved with ‘The Sun’ newspaper. It also implies that reading The Sun newspaper, you are almost a part of a community, and that reading ‘The Sun’ can make Britain Great.

Production Legal and Ethical Issues.

The two main companies which cover the media publishing, these re Independent Press Standards Organisation(IPSO) and Advertisement Standard Authority(ASA).This both companies are based in the UK and work with dealing with any complaints that have been made in the media industry. Some of the things they deal with is Copyright, ethical issues, discrimination, children and accuracy.

Copyright- (LEGAL CONSTRAINTS) Copyright is a form of protection given to the authors or creators of "original works of

authorship," including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic and other intellectual works copyright is massively important within ‘The Sun’ so therefore people are not able to use the logo of The Sun newspaper, without their permission, or this is breaching the codes of practise.

The Right To Privacy-(LEGAL CONSTRAINTS) Everyone is entitled to their rights of privacy. Therefore when it comes to publishing content

about people ‘The Sun’ will need to ensure that they aren’t breaching anyone's privacy or any regulations. Evidence of this is when The Sun released a story about Kym Marsh’s boyfriend as she sued The Sun over a breach of privacy. Kym sued The Sun for doing this and took them to court where they had to pay out £50,000 in damages and an injunction stopping future publication. Kym’s husband also applied for the destruction of the video recording.

Page 67: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Production Legal and Ethical Issues- ’The Sun’

Discrimination-(ETHICAL CONSTRAINTS).‘The Sun Newspaper’ have to be aware of what they are putting inside their newspapers, by this if they have a particular story which only featuring people of a white race and aren’t including anyone of an ethic minority, then this could be offensive to particular readers as you they are basing the story on race, color, religion, gender and sexual orientation. This could be a problem for The Sun newspaper, as it could cause controversy within the newspaper. Children-(ETHICAL CONSTRAINTS).The Sun Newspaper, children are considered vulnerable, which means there are limitations to what can be published about children, which therefore means that they could open themselves up to legal cases. Evidence of this is the particular story in the News about the Baby P story, as the story was such a negative story. By this they had to protect the child’s identity, by not reveling his surname, as well this they would blur out the child’s face for the child’s own protection. http://www.unicef.org/magic/briefing/childmedia_internet.html https://www.theguardian.com/media/2011/jun/09/the-sun-social-worker-baby-p-story

Intellectual Property:The Sun states on their website that their content, trade marks, copyright, logos and any domain names and other related intellectual property rights or other features belong to The Sun only or their licensors, this does not grant you any rights in their or with their licensors’ intellectual property whether you are using it for commercial or non- commercial use.The Sun state that you are able to use their services, although you have to follow certain rules and that there are restrictions which follow that: You may use their services for personal, private and non-commercial purpose: and you must

not commercially exploit or sell any content which appears in their newspaper. Within their website when it comes to citizen journalism, or if you want to contribute to a story

Legal and Ethical Issues.Intellectual property- Is Having the right type of intellectual property protection helps you to stop people stealing or copying. This applies to my magazine as I will be able to stop anyone from trying to steal any of my information images etc., and say it is their own, so this is really important I have this can it protects all my information and other properties of mine. As well this also applies to other people who have the right to protect their property. This would link to my magazine as if someone wanted to use my magazine they would need my permission to do so.Or I would need a companies permission to use their logo in my magazine.Copyright Issues-Copyright is a form of protection given to the authors or creators of "original works of authorship," including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic and other intellectual works copyright is massively important when it comes to producing my music magazine, as the editors and producers of my magazine would have to insure that they are aren't using any images without the persons permission, or this could be seen as breaking the laws of copyright. If we were to use an image that is owned by some else we are able to get in contact with the person who owns the image and ask them if we are able to use their image.Data Protection Act- Making sure I project my content with my magazine if really important, I will do this by using ‘data protection act’ this protects any personal information and any personal information kept within my publishing company. An example of this is that it need to be used correctly, fairly, this also means that they keep protected employees beliefs, opinions and any criminal records. This is important that we keep this safe because someone's personal life could affect the company and each worker should have privacy when it comes within work life and home life.

This is the Homepage of for The Sun, in this screenshot, where readers are able to access news, football news, sport or TV and showbiz news.Having a website where readers are able to access the website, and read information and stories is a affective way of advertising your newspaper this is due to information online becoming more popular and a lot more easier to access. At the top of the website there is a drop down button where you are able to sign in, into your own account, you are also able to access different additions such as The Sun Scotland, and The Sun Ireland. If you don’t have an account there is an access button which allows readers to create an account for free. The language used on the website, is informal language as they include short quotes taken from articles, to draw the reader in to the newspaper, the language is also informal as they include swearing.

The Sun Website Analysis – Home PageRelationship between the Newspaper and the Consumers

Page 73: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

The Sun Website Analysis-Contact Us. On the home page they do not focus on one particular

story, they focus on many although the main and most popular tends to be at the top of the page. There are many drop down sections where you are able to click on different category's such as TV & Showbiz, as well as general news. They also have a section where you are able to watch videos which have been uploaded to their website these involve videos such as Breaking News, allow readers to watch around 2 minute videos on news which has just come in or recent news.

The Sun include different tabs so this has been done to attract a variety of readers so they cover all angles of the news. Most of the news stories on The Sun website are soft news stories, which are based around celebrities and sports.

. Based on the demographics of the readership for The Sun, stereotypically they are in a lower socio-economic group (D – E), therefore they have less of a disposable income. This means that they will be more attracted to free trials as they do not have to spend large amounts of money on staying up to date. As well as this they would fit into the categories D and E because they tend to be more interested in social media, and are more likely to read news which comes from their phone rather than go out and by a newspaper.

Page 74: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

The Sun Website Analysis. Here is this screenshot it is evident that readers are able to contact The Sun Newspaper directly therefore this links with the idea of Citizen Journalism” (Gillmor – 2004) this is where readers are able to email or ring in and have their say on a particular story or they are able to send their own stories in which then maybe considered for publishing if they are relevant and worth including in the newspaper. This is a positive way of interacting between the newspaper and the consumer. As well as this on The Sun’s website there are other links and emails etc. which allow readers to contact the newspaper directly whether that it reporting technical issues with the website or that they want to make a complaint about something.

Page 75: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Conclusion. To Conclude this I have looked into both Newspapers and magazines which are

both UK print based media forms, for example I have looked into Q Music Magazine and The Sun Newspaper.

While looking into these forms of print bases, I have analysed many front covers and DPS to conclude why and how readers are more likely to read one over the other. I have also research the readership for both a magazine and newspaper.

As well as this I have analysed both magazine websites and newspaper websites, and seen if they are in synergy with social which I have demonstrated through my work that they are.

Furthermore, I have looked into what types of products are analysed within the magazine or newspaper and researched into why these particular products are advertised, I have also looked at what the rates are like for advertising a product inside and what the costs are depending on a full page or half page advertisement.

Genre and Target Audience

Page 85: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Genre and Target AudienceWhat type of Genre is Q?Q magazine, doesn’t fall into a magazine category. Q music magazine is eclectic magazine which therefore means it specifies in different types of music, therefore this opens up a wide range of magazines that the audience can buy.Q magazines main interest is in releases the latest songs, and upcoming artists and music. As well as music they also included interviews with well known people. Target audience-Q music Magazine target audience is around men who are in their 30s-40s (Hartley) the magazine appeals to men more then women For the older, more mature and more sophisticated, which is reflected in how the music is portrayed in the magazine. The magazine would be aimed at middle class as it is more expensive then other magazines. This also suggests that as the magazine is quite expensive compared to other magazine retailing at around £3.90, this suggests that the people who buy it are older and working as they are able to afford to buy this on a regular basis.

Q music Magazine in 1986, to present day and how it has changed using more up to date artists on the cover, to invite more people to read it.

Genre and Target Audience

Magazine of Inspiration

Having deconstructed the genre and target audience for this publication I am now clearer as to who I need to target for the launch of my own magazine.

Page 87: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Intended Target Audience. My target audience for my magazine is ages 15-18+

and my magazine will be aimed at girls and boys. When it comes to the demographics my target

audience fit into the category E and when it comes to their psychographics they would fit into Aspires because they SEEK STATUS, they would be materialistic, acquisitive orientated to image and appearance persona and fashion.

Typically younger people would be typically interested in my magazine as they would read my magazine to ‘escape’ from reality (‘Diversion’ - Katz).

Page 88: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

MY TARGET AUDIENCE • Simply sound Target Audience: 15-18+• Sound Key’s target audience:13-16+ • When it comes to psychographics my target audience would fit into Aspirers

because they are SEEK STATUS. • When it comes to my theory my magazine best fits into Hartley as I am basing my

magazine on around age, gender, and ethnicity. There there isn't a specific person who can read my magazine it is open to everyone.

• Katz: When it comes to Katz theory my target audience would be come under ‘Diversion’ this is because they would read my magazine, so that they can escape from reality, such as everyday life whether that is school life, working or life in general. They would feel like they are not worrying about any issues they may have when they read my magazine.

• Hartley’s 7 subjectivities; When it comes to Hartley’s theory I will be mainly focusing on age and gender for my magazine, by this I will be making my magazine accessible to both genders, as well as focusing on a particular age group I want my magazine to be aimed at- (Final Idea – 15-18+)

Maslow’s Theory: ‘Social climbers’ ‘survivors’ and ‘explorers’. My target audience would fit into the category ‘Explorers’ this is where the

audience are driven to change caused by social media, and everything which changes in the media. My target audience would fit into this category as they are driven by the change of media, making sure they keep up to date with the latest issues that are happening in the media industry.

They would also be a part of ‘Survivors’ as they will want the security and a routine of knowing that my magazine will be released monthly.

Socio-Economic Need: • My target audience for my magazine would full in to the categories E and D, this

is because as they are of a young age they are likely to still be in education or in a semi-skilled workers, therefore they are unlikely to be earning a lot of money therefore this links in how I have priced my magazine, quite cheap so they will be able to afford it each month.

• Psychographics: • My target audience would be ‘aspirers’ because they would look up to particular

people, like their role models and aim to aspire to be like them.

Price: The price of my 2nd magazine, is £3.25 which is slightly more expensive I have chosen to price my magazine at this price because unlike my first magazine idea I have decided to include for information/facts than pictures as this may appeal to people more.

Colour Schemes-My main colour schemes in my magazine are going to be grey and yellow. The reason I have picked these two colours is because I want my magazine to appeal to both girls and boys. So therefore the grey side of the magazine is for the boys and the yellow for the girls, so that my magazine is covering both genders.

Images- The types of images I am going to use are images based on the theme of my magazine, which is music I am also going to inspire my magazine based on ‘Q.I am also going to include fun images to invite my particular audience to read my magazine.

Price

Price-The price of my magazine would be around £1.50, I have chosen this because price as it’s a cheap than other magazines like ‘Q’. The main reason why I have chosen this price is so that it appeals to a lower target audience so that they are able to afford it.I have also chosen this price because my magazine is going to get released monthly, and I think this is a reasonable price to pay.

Frequency- I have decided that my magazine will get released on a weekly basis, unlike my first idea, I have decided to do this as it keeps the buyers up with up coming information about my magazine.

Colour Schemes-My main colour schemes in my magazine are going to be pink, gold and white. The reason I have picked these two colours is because I want my magazine to appeal to my target audience which is girls although I don’t want my magazine to seem to child-like so that’s why I am adding gold into my design as I want there to a mature feel to the magazine.

Target Audience

Target Audience - My target audience is going to range from 11year olds. I have chosen this age group as my 1st magazine idea is going to be more aimed at girls. According to Hartley 7 Subjectivities the audience would mainly be female and working/middle class. According to Katz’ Uses and Gratification theory the audience would be in the category ‘Diversion’ because by reading this magazine they will be able to escape from reality such as working. Furthermore, the magazine will ‘inform and educate’ them because of the new music content that will be illustrated in the magazine. Lastly, the audience would be ‘survivors’ (Maslow) as they would like the routine of knowing this magazine will produce relevant music of the genre.

Brand Identity-Places in which I will advertise my magazine are Twitter, Facebook, Instagram

Images- The types of images I am going to use are images based on the theme of my magazine, which is music I am also going to inspire my magazine based on ‘Q.I am also going to include fun images to invite my particular audience to read my magazine. I will also make sure I include up to date artists to make sure people buy my magazine.

Page 94: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Purpose of Magazine Conventions.Main picture- By having the main picture in the center of the magazine taking up most of the room on the front cover, draws people into the magazine as a result of this they may buy the magazine increasing the amount of sales and popularity. Not only that but having an up to date artist on the cover may also make people buy the magazine as they are possibly seeing one of their favorite artists on the magazine.

Autograph-Having Tinie Tempah's autography on the front cover in white stands out against the dark colors on Tinie Tempah such as his sunglasses. This could implies that the magazine is a lot more personal to the buyer.

Masthead-The iconic red and white logo largely displayed on the front cover would also draw people into buying the magazine as it contrasts against the white background, and the lighter colors on the front cover. As well as having the logo so large in the corner of the page would also stand out as people may recognize the logo.

Readers Requirements-Having a list of well-know artist listed down the side of the page, gives other readers a chance to read the magazine if they aren't as interested in Tinie Tempah. This connotes how Q magazine are catering to each readers needs.

House Colors-All the house colors are all very neutral and basic, by having these colors neutral and plain make the artist such as Tinie Tempah stand out against the light/neutral background.

Inspiring slogan, personally said from the artist. Could inspire others who are interested in music.

Date-issue-price; The date that the magazine was released on was November 201 and selling at a price of £3.99.

Strapline-The strapline of this Q magazine Reads ‘Discover great music'. This connotes to inspiring thoughts such as, Q are trying to persuade the readers to readthe magazine. As well as this by having the verbal code ‘Great’ suggests the music talked about in this magazine is better than any other music.

http://www.slideshare.net/HelaBellil/analysing-magazine-front-covers

Connotations-The main connotations Of Q link to the theme of the magazine such as ‘queue’ like queue the music, this relates to the theme and links to the types of music in the magazine.

Page 95: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Background Features-One feature of this page is close up shot of the artist draws the reader in more as their attention of focused on the artist. Having the contrast high in the main picture as well as the background, draws attention to the background and makes the most important features stand out such as ‘Big Ben’.

Having Humor within the magazine would draw more readers to it. By having a a personal quote from the artists himself, which would therefore make it a lot more personal and direct. Furthermore by adding humor into the quote makes it seem less serious and as if the artist is having a laugh with the reader. Position of objects - Having the artist

standing in front of the London skyline, whilst having is guitar next to him adds to the effect that he's just a regular person growing up in a normal city, which therefore could inspire people to follow in him footsteps.

Drop Capital: The drop capital is the large letter starting of the article. This tells the reader that the beginning of the article starts there. The drop capital is bright red which links to the contents page and the front cover.

Page 96: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Fonts and Colours of Q MagazineThe main house styles of Q magazines are most of the covers have a light background, and the image of the artist is normally dark or they are wearing dark clothes, by having the artist in dark clothing or the image being dark against a light background makes the artist stand out. By doing this it makes the reader be drawn to the image of the artist first more than the word. Although, on the other hand if the reader is being drawn to the photo first of the artist and they like the artist this may make them read the words around the image. Format- The length of Q magazine is 28.5cm, the width of Q magazine is 21cm.Language- The language used on the cover of the magazine are mainly bold words, such as ‘breaking BAD’ and ‘ROCK STAR'. These words would mainly appeal to the audience such as men, but this the words are quite bold statement words whereas this wouldn't’t appeal as much to a woman. Therefore this may mean the magazines are a lot more popular therefore more people are buying them making high profits for shops selling them. I Have decided to analysis this front covers house style and the fonts in order to give me inspiration for my own magazine, and how I will make it look neat and professional.

Page 97: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Magazine House Colours.

For my final magazine house colours, I decided to go with the colour, grey yellow black and red. I went for these colours in particular as they fitted well with my genre of music I would be featuring within my magazine, as well as these colors' both addressing each target audience.

These are the colors I decided to go with for my magazine front cover and DPS, the reason why I decided to go with these colors is because they best fitted in with my genre style, as well as fitting in with the different artists I am going to be featuring in my magazine. Red, and yellow are bold colors which means they are going to stand out against the black and grey colors in my magazine.I also decided to keep the red theme in from my magazine of inspiration, although I would only use it for conventions such as the puff promotion, headings so that they will stand out.Yellow produces a warming effect, arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity. Yellow is very effective for attracting attention, so use it to highlight the most important parts of my music magazine and thus will enhance the quality of this print media product.

“Genre’s are instances of repetition and difference” (Steve Neale 1980)Some of the conventions I will be ‘repeating’ in my magazine will be, the house style and color. The reason why I have decided to repeat my house color throughout my magazine and not change them, as I want my audience to become familiar with my house style/colors in order for them to recognize my magazine due to the colors in shops compared to other magazines.

Spending Power.Price-The price of my magazine would be around £3.25,the main reason for pricing my magazine at this price is because it is cheaper than my magazine of inspiration which is ‘Q Music Magazine’ I decided to price my magazine cheaper than Q and another magazine is so that my target audience would be able to afford my magazine. Although, for my first magazine I created then changed I was pricing my magazine at £1.50, the reason why I changed the price of this to £3.25 is because the magazine I was looking at to come up of the price of £1.50 was ‘We Love Pop’ and when comparing ‘We Love Pop’ with ‘Q Music Magazine’ the content between the two was completely different, this is why I decided to mix both contents together to come up with the content for my magazine. The purpose of a reader profile is to advertise the magazine and see what type of spending power they have. It also shows hat the readers like and enjoy to read. Q magazine uses musical knowledge as the readers of the magazine take music very seriously and the writers take pride in their work. 33.8% of women read Q magazine and 66.2% of man as well as 83.8% of 15-34 year olds and 63.2% of people aged 35 years and over. Therefore people are more likely to pay for the full cost of the magazine as they are most likely in full time work and can afford to pay for the magazine every other month.

Here I have created, the ideas of fonts I am going to be using for my magazine. I decided to use these fonts and styles for both of my ideas.I want to make sure that it is consistent throughout. I have also made sure that my font looks interesting as it would appeal/address to the target audience. I have chosen several fonts that will be used in my magazine, because some are easier to read than others when sized differently, although I didn't want my magazine to contain a lot of different fonts as it could just confuse the reader, and become messy.

Page 103: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Masthead/logo ideas.Masthead text ideas-

Reason - When creating my magazine I want to make sure that my magazine masthead is eye-catching to the reader, I have come up with a name for my magazine ‘Simply Sound’ the reason for choosing this particular name I decided to reflect my masthead on my logo, by this it is going to be simple but eye-catching. I have chosen to call my magazine ‘simply sound’ because my magazine is simply going to based round music which creates a ‘sound’ as well as this some people use the word ‘sound’ as describing something which is good.

Logo idea- for my logo I have decided to use to first 2 letter of my masthead “SS” the reason for choosing this is because its catching and the reader will remember it easily. I have picked a similar font to my masthead, I have created this logo on Photoshop, making sure that I include my house colors, yellow and grey. The background of the logo is yellow and I plan to keep this the same throughout the whole magazine. I used different effects including stroke, bevel and emboss.

Graphic Layout-FRONT COVER-”Sound Key”.

Firstly, for my main Image of my magazine I have chosen to have the main image in the centre of the page as it will draw the reader straight to the picture. I have also chosen to not have the front cover too busy as it could distract the reader away from the star artist. As well as having text and information around the image, as for some readers the image might not be the most important thing on the page but the text/info is. The Logo I have decide to have my logo in the left hand corner I was inspired to do this my the music magazine Q. Cover Stories-I have also chosen to have the cover stories right next to the star artist, I have chosen to do this as when the reader, looks at the magazine cover they will look straight to the cover lines which would intense them to look inside. I am also including Puff Promotion-coveys how this would persuade the reader to read inside the magazine. Price the price of my magazine is going to be slightly more than my previous plan, as this magazine is going to contain more text than images although I am not going to price it too high as I still want it to be affordable.

Page 105: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Graphic Layout-DPS-”Simply Sound”

Page 106: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Planned Format and Style - Front Cover-Pre-production materials.

Masthead; I have decided to have my masthead in the left hand corner of the page, I have done this because I still want to include my logo although I want the artist to be the main attraction. I was inspired to do this my Q music magazine.

Main image; for my magazine I have change the idea of having the artist cover the whole page, but I have decided to have the artist in the middle of the page, the reason for this is that this magazine is going to contain less images and more fun, inviting information I have done this as my magazine needs to appeal to all types of audiences.Barcode, price and date; I am keeping the barcode in the same place like Q magazine.

Main title; I have decided to keep it traditional and have the title at the top of the page the reason for this is that I want to keep the focus on the ‘star artist’ although I still want the title to link to the ‘star artist’ on the front page.

Puff Promotion; Instead of a puff promotion that reads ‘free gift’ I have included a ‘coming soon’ puff promotion as others who are willing to buy the magazine on a monthly basis may appeal to them more. I have ladled/coloured it in red in order to stand out.

Cover stories; I want to include more information about the content that can be found inside the magazine. Therefore I plan to include a small textbox with the name of one artist and their autograph inviting the reader in. This will be placed over the front cover subjects lower chest, as this is not considered as an important area that creates ‘star appeal’, as well as this it would still give the reader an insight as to what the magazine is about..

Like I said I have decided to go with this hand drawn draft although, I have taken the idea of just having one person on the cover which I took from my 1st idea.

Page 107: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Main Interview; the main part of my interview is going to be to the right hand side of the page, I have done this because I feel that while the reader is reading the information about the star artist they are able to refer back to the image while they are reading.

Pull Quote; Having a pull quote form my interview in bold, this will attract the readers to the quote which would get them interested in the interview, it also demonstrates what will be in the interview and what it is based on and who is it about. Page number; Will be shown

on each page at the bottom corner or each page.

Interview Draft Planning.

This image conveys how I have drafted a dew questions and ideas for my interview, going over what I would ask. After planning I began to write up the interview with a series of questions.I began to draft questions before finalizing what I was actually going to write, I did this so that I wasn’t just asking closed questions like ‘Yes or No'. I also drafted questions as to make sure that they fit with the artist I am interviewing. I chose Krept and Konan because they are a popular well known group and fits in well with my target audience.

Page 109: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Final Copy of Interview.Krept joins us at Simply Sound to chat about his life in music and his lifestyle out of his music career. So Krept lets get the questions rolling, how old were you when you started off in the music industry?Krept: I was around 13 years when I started loving music. I started to make up my own raps after school and my other mates would join in and we would have a rap off (laughs). So basically that is how it all started and I’m still creating raps to this day. We love your music and your rapping is great. When you were younger did you think you would be here today?Krept: Nah defo not, we just began making up raps in our bedroom after school for a bit of fun, and now were here sharing those raps we made with our friends. What do you aim for you music to do to the younger generation?Krept:I just wanted my music to inspire young people, as when I was growing up music play a huge part of my life. I want my music to motivate people to carry on with their goals you know, and it can show that like me coming from a run down house in Croydon you can make it somewhere in the world. What could be a motivation quote you could give to your fans then? There's going to be times in your life when people tell you, you can't do something, and there's going to be times in your life when people tell you, you cant live your dreams.Have you had any favourite or life changing moments this year?Krept- My favourite moment by far was when i performed at Reading Festival the crowd when crazy man! The screams were so loud! It was unreal to think that all these people have come to see me perform.Who’s your celebrity friend, and is there anyone you would like to make a song with?Krept: I've always wanted to make music with Kanye West as his music inspired me a lot, I've got a few celebrity friends, most of them singers or rappers like Stormzy, and Ed Sheeran. I would love to preform with Fetty Wrap as I'm close mates with him, but we live such busy life's, when it comes to preforming our timings never add up.

How do you come up with the raps you make?Krept-I tend to base my raps around passed experiences in life when growing up I didn’t have the best childhood you know always getting into trouble and fights in school, getting myself mixed up with the wrong people, like joining gangs.Do you think young people are targets for this type of up bringing, getting themselves into gangs? And a fan wanted to know do you have any pets?Krept: yeah course, there are so many young people getting mixed up in the wrong groups, getting involved in drugs and crime, you know I was young too and got mixed up with the wrong people.Krept- Yeah I’ve got a family, but would love to have a pet of our own but cant as were always on the go.Who do you base your style of clothing on?Krept- my style icon is Usher, I've always been inspired by what he wears and he can make wearing sunglasses in the dark, good !! (LAUGHS)Hahaha yeah he can, is there a song which you have enjoyed writing the most?Krept –My most enjoyable song I have written would be Dreams featuring Ed Sheeran, I loved writing this song with Ed as he’s a huge inspiration to me selling out the O2, when he first started off singing on the streets for some pocket money .. Now look where he is!!ahhh no way! I'm a HUGE fan of Ed Sheeran!!I think that’s all for now Krept, thank you for coming in and answering some questions for us the fans will love that motivational quote.Krept- no problem, anytime.Good Luck at Wireless, and we hope to see you soon!!

Production Legal and Ethical Issues.

Before my magazine can be published and brought by the readers, there are factors which need to be covered before my magazine is released to the public. Copyright- (LEGAL CONSTRAINTS) Copyright is a form of protection given to the authors or creators of "original works of

authorship," including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic and other intellectual works copyright is massively important when it comes to producing my music magazine, as the editors and producers of my magazine would have to insure that they are aren't using any images without the persons permission, or this could be seen as breaking the laws of copyright.

The Right To Privacy-(LEGAL CONSTRAINTS) Everyone is entitled to their rights of privacy. Therefore when it comes to publishing

content about people I need to make sure that I am not breaching anyone privacy or any regulations. To make sure that all content is acceptable, and not breaching anyone's privacy, I must ask all the people who are featuring in my magazine for their permission to use photos and information about them.

issue. All the content inside my magazine has to meet the editors code of practice. Therefore no content should be included in my magazine which could be offensive to certain individuals based on race, color, religion, gender and sexual orientation. Although, so of this could be mentioned in certain parts of my content, only if it has appropriate relevance to the story.

Intellectual Property

A watermark is a form of intellectual property copyright, this can be found on, online and in written work ect. It can be shown by using a faint design of the copyright logo or, the name of the company who the image as created by. It is important that this is done so

that none can use your image without permission. Also, if someone uses your image without permission you will know as the company's logo is hard to get rid of as the name of the company when on the picture is typically

layered over the top of the image.I think in my case as my magazine will be featuring a lot of images, it is important that I protect my images, this is because images are easier to use over written work because

of “copy and paste”.

Page 127: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

IPSO When it comes to legal issues. There is a code of practice which editors have to follow,

additionally here are some which newspapers/magazines will have to follow and that I would as well during the production of my own magazine:

Clause 1: ‘Accuracy: The press are not allowed to publish any inaccurate or misleading information or pictures'

will be applying this to my magazine as I will be ensuring that I don’t not include any sensualized information.

Page 128: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Accuracy. Accuracy is important to have within my magazine, to ensure that it stays

professional. Things I would make sure that are correct and accurate are information

and the content. By this I would make sure that all content is not sensationalized by making sure that I am not including any false data or information, and if this was to happen I would make sure that I will change it immediately.

I would also make sure that I am accurate with other features such as making sure the date is correct on each copy, as well as putting the correct issue number of the magazine.

When it comes to the images of my magazine I will make sure that when producing my magazine I will position my images correctly on the page, and make sure that they aren’t overlapping any text which might be important.

Copyright and use of IP- When it comes to Intellectual property, when using social media idents such

as Twitter and Facebook. When it comes to using Twitters ident, as well as other forms of social media

I will have to ask for permission to use their logo, this is apart of the copyright issue as this isn’t my work own and has been created by someone else.

To ensure that someone doesn’t use my logo, I have registered my trademark(evidence of this in screenshot below) doing this ensures that nobody uses my logo without my consent, and that if they want to they will have to come and contact me to ask.

As my logo will be under the Intellectual Property Law, this means that they will have to ask me for permission as it is under this law of copyright which means that you need permission to use it.

Children-(ETHICAL CONSTRAINTS). As children are considered vulnerable, which means there are limitations to what can be

published about children. Therefore it is important if I was going to include any content/pictures of children in my magazine I would have to have a contract of agreement from the child’s parent/guardian for them to sign so that they allow us to publish content if the content is necessary. This is really important that this happens for safeguarding of children, in order to keep a positive reputation of my magazine.

These are some of the things that I would have to consider when using promotion products in my magazine, such as making sure that I’m not using images of children to promote products in a vulnerable way, and that the images are limited to what the children can do.

Discrimination-(ETHICAL CONSTRAINTS). My magazine will be responsible for all its content which is included in each issue. All the

content inside my magazine has to meet the editors code of practice. Therefore no content should be included in my magazine which could be offensive to certain individuals based on race, color, religion, gender and sexual orientation. Although, so of this could be mentioned in certain parts of my content, only if it has appropriate relevance to the story.

Misrepresentation of Black Women. In the media there was a

misrepresentation of a cover for the brand L’Oreal by this the singer Beyoncé, photo was edited for the brand to make her skin tone seem a lot lighter than it actually is. This is form of misrepresentation of the person on the cover, as the brand are somewhat trying to show Beyoncé differently.

The brand may have decided to represent Beyoncé of a lighter skin tone, as the brand L’Oreal doesn't’t feature a lot of women with a different ethnic background.

When it comes to IPSO Complaints System this would come under ‘misleading’ and ‘Discrimination'. This is because the brand is discriminating against women of a color as they are perceiving their brand, to be a brand which only photographs women of a lighter skin tone.

Despite the controversy that has ensued regarding Beyoncé's unrecognizable ad for L’Oréal, the French cosmetics giant have denied altering the shot:“We highly value our relationship with Ms. Knowles. It is categorically untrue that L’Oréal Paris altered Ms. Knowles’ features or skin-tone in the campaign for Feria’s hair color.”

Complaint Case Study.

Here is a recent complaint from the music magazine NME,when someone complained about a inaccurate article which was considered misleading and a breach of the code “Accuracy". The article was reported on Paul McCartney singing event at HMV, which the complainant attend. The complainant disputed the claim that five hundred copies of the singers newly-released album had been signed at the event. In this case the Press Complaints Commission resolved this case.

Conclusion. The purpose of this learning outcome is that, I needed to access the risks and hazards

when producing my magazine, as well as the legal and ethical issues, which I may come across when my magazine is being published.

Firstly, I looked at the risk assessment when taking the photographs for my magazine, as there were some penitential risks I decided create a ‘location recce’ this allowed me to identify the possible risks and hazards near me when taking my images, I did this so I knew what the risks were and so that they don’t cause harm to anyone involved in taking the pictures.

In then created two image plans which allowed me to know how I was going to take my images ect. This included things like date, permission needed ad the potential hazards. I also created another image plan although this included things like equipment, location and the purpose of the shot type and the location.

After this I created an email, asking for the subjects consent to take photos of him as I would of needed to require permission from him. I also created a consent form, for more evidence.

Page 136: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Conclusion Continued. Following on in this learning outcome, I also analyzed some of the

areas in which would come under the ‘Code of Practice’ for IPOS complaints. I analyzed a number of case studies in the media, and analyzed why they come under the editors code of practice.

Page 137: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Survey Monkey

In this question I asked people what age category they fell into, the majority of the results were 16-18 years old this is why I am going to base my magazine for this target audience.

Page 138: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Survey MonkeyIn this question I asked what gender most people were, I got a 75% result of females, and a 10% of males, although I have decided I will aim my magazine at both males and females, even though I got a higher amount of females, respond I don’t think I asked enough males that is why the male percentage is so low, I will be making sure I including conventions to my magazine which attract both male and female.

Page 139: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Survey MonkeyIn this question I asked own often do people buy a magazine, 80% of people said never and 40% of people said on a weekly basis, so I have decided to look at both responses and decided I will release my magazine on a monthly basis.

Page 140: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Survey MonkeyIn this question I asked what music magazine people would read/buy. 80% of people said they never buy a magazine, and 20% of people said that they read/buy Q magazine, and for that reason this is why I am using Q magazine as my magazine of inspiration.

Page 141: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Survey MonkeyIn this question I have asked what are the main reasons for buying this particular magazine, and 60% of people said that they would only by the magazine if it had free gifts in and 40% of people said that they would buy this magazine, for a general interest in the content.

Page 142: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Survey MonkeyIn this question I asked what is the maximum price people are willing to pay for a music magazine, and 60% of people said that they would pay £2-£2.50, and 40% of people said that they would pay £3-£3.50.So therefore I have decided to lower my price of the magazine even more to a price of £1.50 and that I hope by doing this that more than 60% of people I asked would buy my magazine.

Page 143: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Survey MonkeyIn this question I asked what is the best way to advertise any magazine, 60% said by TV, as many people watch it, and 40% said social media, and social media is growing each day and most people go on some form of social media. So as a result of this I am going to be advertising my magazine in the form of social media such twitter and Facebook, by making a Facebook and twitter, I may even decide to try and include my magazine on a TV advert, although the downside to this is that this can be expensive.

Page 148: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

I decided to take test photography shots in two places as I wanted to see which images came out best, I had to insure that the area in which I was taking the images was safe a free of any hazards that could Injure anyone around me when taking the images. I therefore carried out an risk assessment of the locations in which I was taking the pictures.

Page 158: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Page 159: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Planned Format and Style - Front Cover-Pre-production materials.Masthead; I have decided to have my masthead in the left hand corner of the page, I have done this because I still want to include my logo although I want the artist to be the main attraction. I was inspired to do this my Q music magazine.

Main image; for my magazine I have change the idea of having the artist cover the whole page, but I have decided to have the artist in the middle of the page, the reason for this is that this magazine is going to contain less images and more fun, inviting information I have done this as my magazine needs to appeal to all types of audiences.

Barcode, price and date; I am keeping the barcode in the same place like Q magazine.

Page 160: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Main Interview; the main part of my interview is going to be to the right hand side of the page, I have done this because I feel that while the reader is reading the information about the star artist they are able to refer back to the image while they are reading.

Pull Quote; Having a pull quote form my interview in bold, this will attract the readers to the quote which would get them interested in the interview, it also demonstrates what will be in the interview and what it is based on and who is it about. Page number; Will be shown

on each page at the bottom corner or each page.

House Styles Continued-”Simply Sound”

These are the colors I decided to go with for my magazine front cover and DPS, the reason why I decided to go with these colors is because they best fitted in with my genre style, as well as fitting in with the different artists I am going to be featuring in my magazine. Red, and yellow are bold colors which means they are going to stand out against the black and grey colors in my magazine.I also decided to keep the red theme in, from my magazine of inspiration although, I would only use it for conventions such as the puff promotion, headings so that they will stand out.Yellow produces a warming effect, arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity. Yellow is very effective for attracting attention, so use it to highlight the most important parts of my music magazine.

Step By Step-Creating My Front Cover. Firstly, I created my front cover by using a template by creating one by file, new and using the

international option which then gave me a blank page, secondly I dragged the ruler tool option down and created an brief outline of where I was going to place each convention of my magazine. Then after this I changed the color of my background to my house colors(which is grey), I then after this used the gradient affect so the background wans’t as harsh.

Next, I placed my logo which I had already created before, and made sure that the blue ruler lines where inside the logo and the side of the logo weren't going beyond the blue lines. I then began to insert two shapes one for my strapline and one for my puff promotion, and made sure that each time I added something in I named each layer.

After this I included texted, by using the pen tool to create a box, which meant when typing my text wouldn't’t go outside that box, and that when placing any images in that the text goes around the image nicely. After this I went onto a different document and opened up my front cover image, and began to use the quick selection tool to remove the background, after this I placed this image on to my front cover making sure I moved the image layer above my background layer in order for it to sit in front of the background and show up. Once I had positioned my image in correctly and balanced it out on the page, I used the bending tool on the image and blended the edges of the image so that it merges in with the background, and doesn't’t look like I have just placed the image in.

After this, I typed in some of my cover stories and made sure I labeled each layer corresponding to what each cover story was called, once I had done this is corrected the font style to how I wanted it and made sure that each word/phrase was in alignment with each other and that they were all the same size.

Page 171: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Step by step-Creating My Front Cover.

As well as this I then began to create my barcode, I did this by created a white shape in order to back/board my barcode, after this is in ported a picture of a barcode that I had previously found, and inserted in a re-shaped it to size making sure that I held down shift and re-sized my image I did this so that I didn't’t pixilate the image. After getting my image of the barcode to the size that I wanted, I used the text tool, and just underneath the barcode, I typed out the following “issue 1, DATE and PRICE”. I then re-sized, and highlighted the text and used the arrows on the keyboard, and moved the text so that it was more in the middle of the barcode.

After this is imported images such as Facebook logo and twitter as well as my logo I then used the ruler tool to make sure that when positioning my smaller images for my barcode that they were all in-line with each other and as well as this they were all the same size, and weren't too big.

Page 172: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Step by Step-Creating My Front Cover.

After this I began to create my ‘puff promotion’ I did this by using the shape tool and picked the shape which looked like this the reason for this is I wanted to make sure that it stood out against my main image and doesn't’t get lost between all my other features.

Once I had created the shape that I wanted for my puff promotion, I used the filters on that shape and began to sharpen the shape even more so it would pop against the dark background, I then clicked on the text tool and filled in my puff promotion reading ‘ win a free iTunes voucher'. While doing this I made sure that I was labeling/renaming my layers.

When it comes to the main image, I have already sized the image to the correct size as well as this I have used to quick easer tool to get rid of the background, so now I have a cropped image, I then again clicked on filters and sharped it, as well as using the blending tool to blend the edges.

Final product

Page 173: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Step by Step-Creating my front cover. Next, I began to look at my magazine of inspiration and used the

shape tool to create rectangle boxes, I made sure the all the boxes were in line with each other using the ruler tool, after this Is type into each box artists and groups. Then I began to play around with the colour of the fronts, and decided to go with a black box and white text.

After this is began to perfect my main image, blurring out any imperfections.

Page 174: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Step by Step-Double Page Spread. Firstly, I started off with a blank template for my DPS, I then began to

insert the ruler lines, using the ruler tool (ctrl r), I did this as it was copying the lay out from one of my ‘Q music magazines’ and new exactly where I was going to place everything. Starting of with my background, I went onto Google images and found a grey brick wall background, then inserted this onto my background only covering half the background as well as holding down shift while re-sizing so that the image didn’t pixelate. The on a separate document I insert the main image I was going to use and then using the quick selection tool and went around the two people in my image getting rid of the background, after I did the I dragged the image into my magazine and re-sized according to the size of the page, after this I went onto blending options and made sure all the edges of the image weren't harsh and blended well against the brick wall.

Page 175: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Step By Step- Double Page Spread. After this using the shape too I inserted a rectangle at the top of my

page and filled it in with grey to match my house styles using the paint bucket tool. After this using the text tool I inserted all the text that I wanted making sure that the text layer was above the shape layer in order for it to show up. Then I began to adjust the colours of the text to fit my house styles as well playing around with the font. When inserting the text I used the ruler tool to make sure that everything was inline.

After this I began to move the ruler tools that I used for a guide and then started to insert my interview I had already pre-made but I began to use the text tool and by doing this it makes sure that my text goes around my images on the page as well as making sure the text doesn’t over lap with the images, once I didn’t this in double checked any spelling or punctuation errors before putting my interview into the magazine.

Page 176: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Step By Step-Double Page Spread. Next, I highlighted all the questions in bold, and then inserted a quote for

affect. After this at the bottom of the page I added another text box and inserted a web link, and then added both page numbers.

Page 177: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Safe Working Practices.

I found that it is always best to cropping out my background, when editing my magazine or locking my background, and ensuring I use a professional background. It is also important that I used the pen tool by using the ‘pen tool’ (P) it is important because my magazine pages will look the same, and will look neat when going through my magazine, therefore having the text/interview going around any images will give it a professional look as well as it will look appealing to the reader., and that it is important that everything is in line with each other, and look aesthetically pleasing to the eye and not may people would pick up a magazine if it looks messy.

Another good example of an important tool would be the ‘eye dropper tool’ I used this to make sure all my house colors are the same. To make my magazine look professional I used this tool in order to get the exact color as I used before.

Another factor which I used a lot was the when resizing an image I insured that I held down the shift key I did this to ensure none of my images went blurry or pixelated.

As well as insuring I was saving my work regularly so I didn’t loose anything.

Page 178: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Proof Reading and Sub-Editing.

Here is evidence of a screenshot that I have proof read my work on, a Word Document, gone through it and checked for any spelling or grammar mistakes, as you can see I have edited and, corrected incorrect words or phrases using the spell check tool on Word.I did this to insure that everything was spelt correctly before transferring it over to my double page spread, doing this is key as it means I wont be wasting time having to change my double page spread because words and phrases were spelt in correctly. This is also key as I want to make my magazine look as professional as I can, and spelling or grammar mistakes wont make it look professional.

Conclusion. In this final learning outcome, this conveys where I have already produced my magazine,

although have gone back through and made changes to my magazine such as editing. This includes the use of Abobe Photoshop's, in which I have highlighted the tools and features I have used in order to produce a high quality front cover and double page spread.

It was important that I considered all the deadlines to insure that my magazine was produced in time, to be released on its release date. I did this by referencing back to my production plan, making sure everything was completed on each date. This also links to when I also created pre-production, and the post-production plan, which made it a lot more easier to follow each step by step. By creating a production plan, and pre-production plan, this insured that the production of my magazine would run efficiently.

Within my post-production plan, I used a number of tools to help me produce a high quality magazine, and were to a professional standard. When doing this I insured that I explained the safe working practises, and the tools I used.

At the end of this learning outcome, I have given evidence of how I have improve my magazine front cover and double page spread, which I was given feedback from my publisher in my witness statement when pitching my magazine to them, I changed a number of features to my magazine and tool into consideration what my publisher had told me, I did this as I wanted to insure my magazine was to a professional standard, and was of a high quality when competing against other music magazines.

MY TARGET READERSHIP• Simply sound Target Audience: 15-18+• Sound Key’s target audience:13-16+ • When it comes to psychographics my target audience would fit into Aspirers

because they are SEEK STATUS. • When it comes to my theory my magazine best fits into Hartley as I am basing

my magazine on around age, gender, and ethnicity. There there isn't a specific person who can read my magazine it is open to everyone.

• Katz: When it comes to Maslow's theory my target audience would be come under ‘Diversion’ this is because they would read my magazine, so that they can escape from reality, such as everyday life whether that is school life, working or life in general.

My target audience would fit into the category ‘Explores’ this is where the

audience are driven to change caused by social media, and everything which changes in the media. My target audience would fit into this category as they are driven by the change of media, making sure they keep up to date with the latest issues that are happening in the media industry.

They would also be a part of ‘Survivors’ as they will want the security and a routine of knowing that my magazine will be released monthly.

Socio-Economic Need: • My target audience for my magazine would full in to the categories E and D,

this is because as they are of a young age they are likely to still be in education or in a semi-skilled workers, therefore they are unlikely to be earning a lot of money therefore this links in how I have priced my magazine, quite cheap so they will be able to afford it each month.

• Psychographics: • My target audience would be aspires this is because they would look up to

particular people, like their role models and aim to aspire to be like them.

Page 197: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

MASTHEAD AND HOUSE COLOURS1st magazine idea• I want to make sure that my magazine masthead is eye-catching to the reader.• ‘Simply Sound’ is short and snappy therefore rememberable.• I have chosen to call my magazine ‘simply sound’ because my magazine is simply going to

based round music which creates a ‘sound’ as well as this some people use the word ‘sound’ as describing something which is good.

• I have also included alliteration within the masthead of my magazine, using alliteration within the masthead almost gives the masthead rhythm therefore it is a lot easier to remember.

2nd magazine idea• For my second magazine idea I wanted to keep things similar as I target audience for my

second magazine will be the same as my first idea. For my second magazine the house colours are going to be cool toned colours like my first idea the reason for this is that I want the colours to appeal to both genders.

• ‘Sound Key’ is the name of my second magazine I decided to keep with the theme of sound as it is a music magazine and went for ‘key’ as it connotes how sound is key in order to hear the music, I also chose this name it is simple and sort which means my target audience will remember it.

Page 198: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Magazine House Colours. For my final magazine house colours, I decided to go with the colour, grey yellow black

and red.

“Genre’s are instances of repetition and difference” (Steve Neale 1980)Some of the conventions I will be repeating in my magazine will be, the house style and color. The reason why I have decided to repeat my house color throughout my magazine and not change them, as I want my audience to become familiar with my house style/colors in order for them to recognize my magazine due to the colors in shops compared to other magazines.

Page 199: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Calendar Events. My magazine will be published on 1st November. Within my magazine, I have include gossip. Festival dates which are 22nd July,

23rd July 24th July at V festival. Upcoming magazines and future magazines will be released on the 1st of each

month. There will be a puff promotion on the front cover of my magazine which will be

advertising to my readers that they will have a chance to win festival tickets. The reason why I have decided to include a puff promotion which allows you to win something, would persuade my target audience especially because they are young, to read my magazine.

Page 200: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

ADVERTISING AND MARKETING

Marketing ‘Simply Sound’.• My magazine will be competing against ‘Q music magazine due to the fact I

was inspired by some of the features that Q magazine uses such as the placement of the logo, and the different sized fonts.

• The price of my magazine is going to be a lot more cheaper, compared to ‘Q music magazine’ the reason for this is because my target audience are a lot under than Qs target audience therefore if I kept the price as the same as Q’s price I feel that my target audience wont be able to afford it because they would either be employed or have a small job that doesn’t pay a lot unlike Qs target audience.

Page 201: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

‘Simply Sound’ 1st magazine name. ‘Sound Key’ 2nd magazine name.

Page 202: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Advertising and marketingOne way in which I am going to advertise my magazine is via the social media I which is called ‘above the line advertising’ I am going to advertise my music magazine via social media-•Facebook.•Twitter.Benefits of Social media advertising-•Cheap.•Mass audience- therefore my magazine will become more popular.•Typically a quick response as everyone is online.•Communication and interaction with my target audience directly, therefore building a relationship with them there-fore gathering more ideas for more magazines to come.I could advertise my magazine in other magazines, on YouTube (pre roll) or billboards or giving out leaflets al-though this way will cost a lot more money compared to making a twitter/facebook page which is free.

MAGAZINE PERSONNEL

Here I have created my own magazine personnel where I have made placed my magazine logo onto my publishing company which in this case is "Bauer media group"

Page 216: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Spending power The cost of my magazine is £3.25, the reason for putting the

price of my magazine at this price is that I as my target audience are of a young age and most of them most likely wont have a job I didn’t want to price my magazine too high and as my magazine is monthly I think that this is a good price to set my magazine up at.

So therefore in a year If around 19,000 by my magazine in 1 year I will be making

£3.25 x 12=£39.00 £39.00 x 19,000 = £741,000

Page 217: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Subscription My readers will be able to subscribe to my magazine on a

monthly basis which means if they do this they will get the magazine at a discounted price and my magazine will be delivered each month to there local store/newsagents or their house.

2 year subscription on credit card for £272, save 73% 102 weeks for £2.67 per week OR my magazine will stay at its regular price of £3.25 if people

decide not to subscript to my magazine. 1 person will pay: 102 weeks x £2.67 =£272.34

SO.. If 300 people subscribe I will be making £272.34 x 300 = £81,702

Page 218: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Distribution

My magazine is going to cost £3.25 each.In my magazine I will have 60 pages, of coated art paper, which will be glossy so that it stands out and looks appealing to the auidence.I will be bring out 10,000 copies in 1 year. £3.25 x 10,000 = £32,500 this is how much it will cost me to produce my magazines.

Page 234: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Feedback of Pitch-Survey Monkey. This is evidence, that after my picture I emailed the publisher,

as well as other employees who will also be working alongside me if the publisher decides he likes my magazine.

Page 235: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Feedback Of Pitch- Survey Monkey. Here, I gained feedback by creating a survey monkey questionnaire by asking the publisher himself, and his employees a number of questions of on how my pitch went and how I could improve for future pitches to come. One of the questions I asked was which magazine they preferred out of my two idea, and most of them said they preferred my first idea ‘Simply Sound’

What I have gained from my magazine feedback is that over the two magazines I have created the employees and the publisher, said that they preferred my first magazine idea ‘Simply Sound’, some of the reasons were that they preferred the house colours, more and that they appealed more the female and male. As well as the bright yellow, standing out against the grey which made all my conventions on my magazine pop.

Page 236: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Feedback of Pitch-Survey Monkey

Here, I have asked the publisher, and his employees as to what they would rate my pitch out of 10, and 1 being bad. The majority of people said that my pitch was around a 7, as well as a few people giving it a 10.By them doing this it helps me to know what I need to improve on to get all 10s.

Page 237: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Feedback of Pitch-Survey Monkey

Here, I have asked the publisher and his employees, as to which magazine they preferred out of my two ideas, all of them said they would consider buying my first idea ‘Simply Sound’ a lot of them said they preferred the house colours more. Gaining feedback like this allows me to know what I need to do, to improve my second idea, and possibly add more conventions into my first idea to make it even better.

Page 238: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Feedback of Pitch-Survey Monkey

Here, I have asked the publisher as well as his employees as to what I could do to improve on for future pitches, the publisher said to included a slide on the spending power, and how the price of my magazine will be affected by other competing magazines.

Improvement made!

Page 239: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Feedback of Pitch- Interview. Ways in which I gained feed back for my pitch which was by having an interview with the

publisher, where I asked my publisher questions on what went well and where I could improve. There was proof of this by as I was interviewing photos were being taken.

Here are the questions I asked my publisher:1. Did you think I present my pitch well? And what did you think was the best part of my

pitch?2. Did you feel that I had a good mixture of using my script and talking directly to the

audience? and if not what I could I do better.3. Did you think my Front cover and DPS, looked professional enough to buy it? And if not

what could I add to improve it.4. Did I cover every aspect of the my topic?5. Did I manage and explain the financial aspect well, and was it easy to understand the

overall cost to produce my magazine?6. Is there anything I didn’t include? Or was there a particular area of my presentation I

could improve?7. Do you have any tips for me to use in future presentations to come?

Pitch Improvements. Here I have improved my pitch by including, the spending power. Here I have talked about the price of my magazine, how the price of my magazine will be different to other magazines, how it will compete. As well as how much money I will be making in an estimated year.

Another weakness I was given when pitching was to make sure that I put in any of my profits in green, to show that this is a positive thing. As well as putting the total costs in red, as this is what I will be loosing it order, to create my magazine.

I was also given feedback, such as to not use my script as much and try not to rely on that. A way in which I have improved is by practising talking, in front of some of my employees, without having any script to hand, therefore this gets me use to having to make more eye contact with the people I am pitching to, as well as makes the people focus more on what I am talking about rather than them focusing on the paper I am holding in my hand.

Pitch Improvements Continued.

Here is my corrections that I was given back, for my Photoshop work. For my front cover I was told that I needed to move all the conventions of my magazine to the left, like my titles ect.I was also told that I should add a festival logo onto my puff promotion. I have also worked on my corrections by changing my promotional banners language, I decided to change it from “Greatest” to “First” as I am releasing my first issue.

Pitch Improvements completed.

Here you can see that I have improved one of my pitch improvements which was to work on/change my front cover. Here you can see that I have improve on my front cover from left to right. I have worked on it and change the background in order for my main image to stand out, I have also worked on changing the text so that it looks more like my magazine of inspiration. I have also perfected my image by just having a single image, I have also changed the shot type from a ‘medium shot’ to a ‘close up'. As well as this to make the image look professional I have worked on blending the edges of my image better, and change the saturation, and brightness of the image.

Pitch Improvements Continued.

Secondly, you can also see here I have worked on my DPS, I decided to change my image to the single person, as well as working on the image quality itself, instead of using an IPhone, like I used for my first image I used a camera. I decided to keep the brick wall background, like I used for the first image as I thought that it fitted well with my genre of music. I have also decided to change the background colour where my interview is, as I felt the yellow was too distracting, so to in sure I am sticking with my colour scheme, I decided to add yellow in with my ‘pull quote’ and ‘main headline’.

Feedback I was given via my “witness statement”

Final Changes made Continued-Improved. Compared to my first double page spread idea, I have edited and changed it in a number of ways, as I was given feedback from the publisher I was pitching too, to improve on it.I took this into consideration, as I wanted my magazine too look of a high quality, and professional standard so that my magazine standard is high when competing against other magazine competitors.

The main features I changed on my magazine was the image, I changed the image to featuring just one person as I wanted this to be the first thing the readers see, therefore if the image is interesting, and of a high quality this would entice readers to read on in the magazine.

I changed the quality of the image by using a Nikon Camera, whereas to before I was using an IPhone this was a much better way of taking my images, as I was able to adjust to brightness, and the zoom on the camera more without it going blurry.

Calendar Events. My magazine will be published on 1st November. Within my magazine, I have included gossip and information on forthcoming

Festival dates such as 22nd July, 23rd July 24th July at V festival. Upcoming magazines and future magazines will be released on the 1st of each

month. There will be a puff promotion on the front cover of my magazine which will be

advertising to my readers that they will have a chance to win festival tickets and in the process encourage them to stay loyal to the magazine all year round. The reason why I have decided to include a puff promotion which allows you to win something would persuade my target audience to read my magazine.

DPS-Improvements.

Similarly, to my front cover I was also given feedback to improve my double page spread, from my publisher when pitching my magazine to him, I decided to change a number of features, such as the image of the two boys. As well as fonts, background, and the positioning of the interview.

I also then decided to change the images, as it didn't’t look of a high quality, therefore this meant that it didn't’t look as professional. I decided to stick to having one person on the cover of my magazine, as this meant all the focus would be on them, and also meant that when it comes to editing the image, I would be able to spend a lot of time editing just the one image.

Final Outcome-Magazine Front Cover and Double Page Spread- Improvements.

Page 253: Serena Keogh- Unit 30

Conclusion In this learning outcome I have looked into all my feedback, which I received

via Survey Monkey, my Witness Statements, and my verbal interview with my publisher.

Some of the things I got back in my feedback area, was that I shouldn’t focus on my script as much, and try and not read of the script as much. Survey monkey also gave me feedback, saying that they liked my magazine front cover. I also got verbal feedback saying from my publisher that I included a lot of detail when it comes to my over all costs, and also structure all my outgoing and income costs well, which made it clear for the publisher.

Additionally, I think that I should also include a lot of detail on the legal issue and ethical issues, on my magazine.
