Cathedral

SIENA

It is the main temple of the city and one of the most beutiful cathedrals in all Italy.It is devoted to Nuestra señoraDe la Asuncion, theSiena´s virgin.

CONSTRUCTIONIt only takes 48 years for

its construction (1215-1263).

The archiquitect who designed this Cathedral was a barroque archiquect. His name was  Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Latin cross

Ground-plan.

Interesting Historical Fact.They try to make 3 times bigger the main Ground plan. But this project was stopped ,and then finished, because of the “Black Death”.

For what is this cathedral used?

Before AfterIt has use for only priviliged religios people like the Bishop. Not many political activities

Now it is used for tourism and economic activities

As you can see it has a lot of tourism/visitors.

FaçadeThere are lots of gargoyles but not many sculptures from the Bible. In the tympanum we can see the Virgin of Asuncion.
