Blessings of Ramadan

Salman Al Farsl(R) reported Prophet(SAW) said In a sermon in the last of Shaban::«A great month, a blessed month, a month containing, a night which Is better than a thousand months, 'has approached you God has ordained the fasting during it as an obligation, and passing of Its nights In prayer as a voluntary practice. If someone draws near to God during Ramadan with some good deed he will be like one who fulfills an obligatory duty in another month. It is the month of endurance and the reward of endurance Is paradise. This is the month of sharing with others, and a month In which the believer's provision (RIzk) is increased. If someone gives one, who has been fasting, something to break the fast, It will provide forgiveness of his sins and save him from hell, and he will have reward equal to his without his reward being diminished in any respect.

Blessings of Ramadan

We asked, O’ Prophet of Allah we did not have the means to give to the fasting person. Prophet(SAW) said, "God gives reward to the one who gives fasting person some milk, or a date, or a drink of water with which to break the fast. One who gives a full meal to the fasting person, will be given a drink from my reservoir by God and he will not be thirsty till he enters paradise. It Is a month whose beginning Is Mercy, whose middle Is forgiveness, and whose end is freedom from Hellfire. If one makes things easy for his servant during Ramadan, God will forgive him and free him from Hellfire.Baihaqi, Mlshkat Hadlth No:1985

Doors of Jannah opened and doors of Hell closed

Abu Huralrah(R)reported that Prophet (SAW) said: “When Ramadan begins the gates of paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are locked, and the devils are chained. "Another narration has"The gates of Mercy are opened. "Bukhari &Muslim,Mishkat No: 1956

1-IBADAH-Mankind's Purpose on Earth

I have only created Jinns and men, that they may serve Me. No sustenance do I require of them, nor do I require that they should feed me. For Allah [God] is He Who gives (all) Sustenance (forever) Zariyaat),51: 56-58• Ramadan is a time for Muslims to refocus

that goal • Remember their mission • Be grateful to the One, without which,

mankind could not be sustained

Page 29: Significance of ramadan

2-Feel That Hunger!• The hunger and thirst is supposed to be felt. • There is to be a realization that without the bounties of Allah, mankind is helpless

• Giving empathy for those that spend their life in that state – starvation and deprivation.

• Perhaps, it will lead us to sponsor a starving family somewhere in the world.

Page 30: Significance of ramadan

3-It's All about the Sacrifice• Essence of Ramadan and fasting is in its sacrifice for the sake of Allah (God) alone. • Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, “Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.)” (Hadith 127, Sahih Al-Bukari)

• On the contrary, he describes a gate to Paradise called Al-Rayan, that no one will be able to pass through on the Day of Judgment except the one who successfully fasts Ramadan (spiritually, mentally and physically

Page 31: Significance of ramadan

4-Fasting is protection• It is a shield against the fire of Hell.• Narrated Abu Saeed ® that the Prophet (SAW) said,” Anyone who fasts for one day for Allah’s pleasure, Allah shall keep his face away from hellfire for ( a distance covered in) seventy years.” (Bukhari)• It is protection against Allah’s anger.• It is protection against your own desires• It is protection against Shaytan. • It is fortress which protects you against all evils.

Page 32: Significance of ramadan

5-Fasting as a Spiritual Experience• This spiritual fasting is not just abstention from food. • It is a time for increased time in prayer • Increased good deeds, such as charity • A time of abstaining from anger and pettiness, haughtiness and attachment to worldly objects, impatience and frivolity.

• For some this might include staying off the Internet, putting away the Xbox, staying out of the malls, turning off the soap operas,

• Being honest in their business dealings by not jacking up prices unfairly and

• Staying away from people and situations that they know will rile them up

Preparation for Ramadan• Ayesha (RA) said: "I have never seen Prophet (SAW) fast more in any other month of the year than he did in Shaban. He used to fast all of Shaban." and in another narration. "He used to fast almost all of it, except a

little." [Saheeh Muslim]• The scholars' advise us to fast a lot in Shaban, and• Increase acts of worship by getting up at night for Tahajjad

• Recite more Qur’an • Do more Dhikr • Make Shaban a month of Ibadah, to prepare ourselves for Ramadan.

Page 36: Significance of ramadan

1-We have to renew our Taubah (repentance)• We have to make Taubah from:

• 1. Sins of the tongue (backbiting, lies, slander, speaking to people in an insulting way, making fun of others).

• 2. Sins of the heart (show-off, self-admiration, arrogance, envy, hatred)

• 3. Lack of modesty (in dressing, mannerism, way of speaking with the Non-Mahrams)

• 4. Taubah from pleasing others while its displeasing to Allah

• 5. Taubah from all the time wasted (in shopping, telephone, long chat, browsing net).

• Clean up your heart, forgive others and forget, hoping for Allah’s• forgiveness.

Page 37: Significance of ramadan

2-Increase your motivation by increasing Ibadah in Shaban• 1. Pray/increase the nawafil (supererogatory) prayers.

• 2. Tahajjud (night prayer)

• 3. Fast (Monday & Thursday / make up your missed fast)

• 4. Morning and Evening Adhkaar (these are protection/shield against Jinn

• & Shayateen. Do not leave them ever)

• 5- Make a lot of Dua' (at last 3rd part of night, accepted times, last hour of Friday)

• 7. Read Qur'an after Fajr.

Page 38: Significance of ramadan

3-We need to train our senses

• Tongue/ears/eyesight are the ways to the heart. We have to train them to get them used to the act of worship and to refrain from sins.

• We have to train ourselves/our nafs to hate the sins. • Naturally our fitrah (inborn natural state) hates sins, but we have become so accustomed to sins that we have become numb to them

• . Prophet (SAW):" Whoever among you sees an evil action, let him change it with his hand (by taking action); if he cannot, then with his tongue (by speaking out); and if he cannot, then with his heart (by hating it and feeling that it is wrong)." (Narrated by Muslim, 49

Page 39: Significance of ramadan

4-Train yourself to be humble before Allah• Human beings transgress when they feel self-sufficient. • Ask Allah to keep us steadfast upon His Path, • We are in desperate need of Allah to survive in our Dunya and Deen.

• If Allah doesn't keep us steadfast on his way, we can never last.

• We are in need of Allah to fulfill any act of worship.• We have to realize ourselves how badly we are in need of Allah for everything.

Page 40: Significance of ramadan

5-Magnify the symbols (Sha’aer) of Allah.• Salah (prayer), Hajj, Fasting, Masajid, these are all the symbols of Allah

• We have to give them their right & take them serious• Having Ghaflah (heedlessness) is very dangerous to us. • One way to help to magnify the symbols is to get ourselves used to reflecting on acts of worship before we do them

• When you are starting the Salah, reflect and think: "I am about to pray, I am going to meet Allah, put Jannah (Paradise) to your right and the (Hellfire) to your left, think what if I am on the Siraat (Path over Hellfire on day of Judgment) now?“

• Keep struggling and fighting to have Khushoo (humility and attentiveness) in Salah and Allah will grant it.

Page 41: Significance of ramadan

Things to do in Ramadan• 1. Intention (Niyyah) and Resolve (Iradah)• •There has to be right and sincere intention aimed at achieving Allah’s pleasure and His bounty and reward.

• Make ‘intention’ and ‘resolve’ that you would try to inculcate in yourself that high quality of piety or Taqwah that is the objective of fasting

• •Make a firm decision that devotion and regularity would be the hallmark of all your acts

• •Take out time in solitude, during its very first night. Consider yourself present in the court of Allah, glorify Him and invoke His blessings on the Prophet (pbuh), and repent on your sins and follies

Page 42: Significance of ramadan

2-Your relation with the Quran• Fasting and prayers at night, are based and connected with Qur’an in one form or another

• •The least that we get from Tarawih is that we go through the entire Qur’an in one month’s time

• •Due to lack of understanding in Arabic language, many people do not getg the joy and blessings of knowing, and revising, the message and themes of Qur’an.

• Devote extra time in addition to Tarawih, for reading a few passages of Qur’an with the meaning in your own language

Page 43: Significance of ramadan

Study of Quran• Angel Gabriel used to come to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) to repeat the entire Qur’an from its beginning to the end during the course of the month.( Bukhari and Muslim)

• •Best plan is to study as much of Qur’an with its meaning in the day time as is going to be read out in prayers during the night

• You may start studying Qur’an with translation with commitment to continue and finish by the advent of next Ramadan.

• •If you find even this much difficult for you, then at least go through just three verses daily.

• Absorb the Quran in your heart and mind and strengthen the bond of your heart and soul with it

Page 44: Significance of ramadan

3- Avoiding disobedience to Allah• •Fasting aims at inculcating the quality of piety or Taqwah. It is imperative to make special effort in this month to avoid disobedience of Allah.

• •Ramadan creates this special environment through stopping us from eating throughout the day, keeping us in prayers through most of the night, and making us listen to the Qur’an

• •Virtue and piety do not lie in observance of some rituals, the real piety consists of strong belief, love and commitment, patience and fortitude, and giving generously in the way of Allah

Page 45: Significance of ramadan

Avoid disobedience to Allah• •While we should be conscious and considerate in every sphere of life, relations with other people and social contacts merit special attention.

• •The Prophet (pbuh) has summed this up: fasting provides a shield, so do make it a shield. A fasting person should neither use abusive language, nor quarrel; if someone enters into altercation, he should answer it by saying that he is fasting and it is not proper for him to get involved in wrong and indecent acts. (Narrated by Abu Huraira ,Bukhari and Muslim)

• •In another Hadith, the Prophet (pbuh) said that fasting is not about hunger and thirst, rather it requires giving up falsehood and acting upon it. (Narrated by Abu Huraira in Bukhari and Muslim)

Page 46: Significance of ramadan

4-Quest for Goodness• •In the month of Ramadan a small virtue brings the reward of obligatory acts and obligatory acts’ reward increase 70 times, or even more. This is, indeed, a great incentive to do more virtuous deeds.

• •This quest should continue regarding the acts of worship – such as trying to join in congregational prayers with the first call (takbir Tahrima) and regularity in supplementary prayers.

Page 47: Significance of ramadan

Quest for Goodness• • But this quest should also be in the field of human relations – it is virtue to meet a Muslim brother smilingly, it is virtue to remove what may cause pain to him, it is virtue to fill his water-pot with water.

• • When a person uses every single and minor opportunity to please his Lord, then, as a Hadith-Qudsi tells, Allah says that He starts loving that person. & becomes his ears with which he hears, becomes his eyes with which he sees, becomes his feet on which he stands and walks.(Abu Huraira in Bukhari)

Page 48: Significance of ramadan

5. Night Prayers• •“They sleep but little by night, and would ask for forgiveness at dawn.” 51:17-18

• •Tarawih prayers during Ramadan are meant for standing awake at night. Usually people hear Qur’an in Tarawih at the beginning of night

• •You should establish Tahajjad specially in Ramadan. You already wake up for suhoor (meals before starting the fast early in the morning). Wake up 20 minutes or half an hour earlier, make ablution, and offer two rakah prayers.

Page 49: Significance of ramadan

Night Prayers• •It is this part of the night about which the Holy Prophet (pbuh) has told us that Allah Almighty comes closest to the world and declares, ‘Is there anyone who asks Me to fulfill his need, and I will give to him whatever he asks for? Is there anyone who asks for My forgiveness, and I will forgive him

• •Still, if it is difficult to pray two rakah, then you can at least place your forehead on the ground before your Lord and plead with Him, weep and wail, seek forgiveness for your sins, request for all that is good along with perseverance in the path of truth.

Page 50: Significance of ramadan

6. ‘Zikr’ (Remembering Allah) • •What is Zikr? Fulfilling anything that Allah likes – whether it is done through heart or tongue or limbs

• •In Ramadan, mere verbal Zikr, i.e. just repeating some specific words and supplications, is also quite beneficial.

• •Glorify Allah in words like

Page 51: Significance of ramadan

7- Dua• •In Ramadan, there are special moments for acceptance of our supplications. Iftar (meals to break the fast in the evening) time is one such moment – in which Allah’s mercy is ready to envelop us.

• •Try to seek Allah’s mercy more frequently in the first ten days of Ramadan, His forgiveness in the second ten days, and deliverance from hellfire in the third nine or ten days. This is how Allah’s Prophet (pbuh) has described the special attributes of the 3 parts of the month of Ramadan

• •The Prophet (SAW) has specified certain supplications for different times and circumstances, for the day and the night, along with the universally-relevant ones. Make it a feature of your learning program that you would memorize some from each category every Ramadan

Page 52: Significance of ramadan

8-The Blessed Night • •It is this night that Qur’an was revealed. • •This night is better than thousands of months – with regard to its value and greatness, with regard to the bounties and rewards that are distributed, and could be won, in it

• •A person who stays awake during this night for prayers and supplication has been given the glad tidings of forgiveness from all his sins.

• •Hadith informs us that it is any of the odd-numbered nights of the last part of Ramadhan – any of the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th.

Page 53: Significance of ramadan

The Blessed Night• •What is most pleasing to Allah is that His servant (Abd) should engage himself in untiring effort to please his Lord, to seek His mercy and bounties.

• •The time of acceptance of supplications comes during every night, but its occurrence during the Blessed Night adds to beauty and power

• •Holy Prophet (SAW) taught a very comprehensive Dua to his wife A’isha (may Allah be please with her) for this purpose, and we too should verbalize it through the night:

Page 54: Significance of ramadan

9-Etikaf• •If you have the strength and resolve, then do observe Etikaf (spending the last 9-10 days of Ramadan in a mosque).

• •If it is not possible to do it for 10 days, Etikaf for a shorter period is also alright.

• •Etikaf serves for heart and soul, manner and behavior, thought and action as an elixir to shape and mold them according to Allah’s Will.

• •The Holy Prophet (pbuh) always observed Etikaf and strongly recommended it.

• •The essence of Etikaf is that one should devote himself to Allah by cutting himself away from all the worldly engagements, occupations and interests – leaving home and hearth behind to settle in His house and spend all the time in His remembrance.

Page 55: Significance of ramadan

10-Spending in Allah’s Way• •It consists of spending everything bestowed by Allah, including time and energies of body and soul, but most of all, spending wealth.

• •The Holy Prophet (pbuh) was the most generous and benevolent of all people. Yet with the advent of Ramadan and after his meeting with angel Gabriel his generosity and giving nature would know no bounds.

• •Promising 700 times more reward for every grain and coin spend in His way, Allah has said that He could grant even more if He so wills.

• •Open up your fist for the establishment and spreading of Allah’s message.

Page 56: Significance of ramadan

Charity• • Give out in Allah’s way as much of your wealth as possible for orphans and the destitute

• • Give it solely for the sake of Allah without entertaining any hopes of gratefulness or return from anyone: “We feed you only for Allah’s sake; we do not seek of you any recompense or thanks”

• • After proper accounting, take out Zakat, too, in this month. This will bring regularity in addition to the 70 times more reward.

Page 57: Significance of ramadan

11-Service of Humanity• •The Holy Prophet (pbuh) has described the month of Ramadhan as the month of brotherhood and fellow-feeling

• •This month is about sharing the sense of deprivation, worries and problems of others and to help them out

• •Fast can give you a taste of what is felt by others during hunger, thirst, grief and pain. Personal experience can generate a strong and sustainable urge for sympathy and help for others

Page 58: Significance of ramadan

Service of Humanity• •Feeding the hungry, treatment and visitation of the sick, guarding orphans and widows, meeting the demands of the destitute and oppressed, keeping good relations with relatives – all fall in this vast category.

• •The Prophet (pbuh) said: A person who provides iftar to his fasting brother, he will be forgiven from his sins and saved from hellfire. He will get as much reward as of his fasting brother, without any decrease in the reward of the latter

• •Do not consider anything inferior, however small it may be. One time meal, just one glass of water, or just one dollar, some nice talk, some recommendation, giving water to a thirsty dog, all can lead you to Paradise.

Page 59: Significance of ramadan

12-Call or Dawah to the Qur’an• • There can be no better service or sympathy to a person than to save him from Allah’s wrath and Fire and bring him to Allah’s pleasure and His Paradise.

• • You will be rewarded with the good deeds of those you call to the path of virtue and goodness. If you could realize, this sets the chain of never ending reward.

• • Convey the message of Qur’an to all people, create awareness in them about the teachings of Qur’an, invite them to the Quranic mission, and enable them to rise up to the task of upholding the trust of Qur’an.

Page 60: Significance of ramadan

Call or Dawah to Quran• •Call to Allah and to Qur’an provide the most effective means of your own purification and training

• •In the month of Ramadan, hearts are generally inclined to doing good. This is why it is more probable that people would listen to you, that their hearts may receive your message

• •Invite people to Iftar, and take out some time to talk with them.

Page 61: Significance of ramadan

Dawah to Quran• In your interaction with colleagues, keep this duty in mind. Start your talk with reference to Ramadan and take it to the need of fulfilling the mission of Qur’an

• • Note down a few names from among the list of your relatives and visitors. Take it upon yourself that with continuous and warm contact with them during the month of Ramadan, you would prepare them to work for the objective of Qur’an.
