CURRENT TECHNOLOGY IN SMART PHONES

Page 3: Smartphones presentation

Current technology in smartphones Smartphones allow users to have access to

multimeadia players, maps, GPS, Bluetooth, and the internet.

The Blackberry, iPhone, and Droid phones are the most common examples of these phones

Smartphones currently run on a 3G network which allows a transfer of data to the phone from an outside source such as the internet. Also, in newer smartphones, companies are integrating Wi-Fi capability.

Page 4: Smartphones presentation

Bluetooth

Bluetooth technology allows for the Smartphone user to talk on the phone using just an earpiece while in the proximity of their phone that uses shortwave length radio transmissions. These create personal area networks (PANs).

Page 5: Smartphones presentation

BlackBerry

BlackBerry is a commonly used Smartphone which allows users to use a variety of different apps, access the internet, identify songs, use GPS, and many other features.

Page 6: Smartphones presentation

BlackBerry users have access to Slacker Radio, Pandora, and for Verizon users VCAST Music Rhapsody and VCAST Song ID.

Through using VCAST Music Rhapsody users can download their favorite songs, and music videos, as well as set songs as their ringtones.

VCAST song ID allows users to identify the name of songs by placing the Smartphone near a speaker and recording it. The name of the song, name of the artist, and name of the album are recognized and displayed for the users benefit.

iPhone 4

The iPhone 4 takes almost all of the technology that is able to be put into a phone and combines it into the thinnest Smartphone to date.

Page 8: Smartphones presentation

iPhone screen technology

The iPhone 4 has the most technologically advanced screen to be used on any mobile device. Under the 3.5” all glass front screen is the clearest technology available. With a resolution of 960x640 pixels the iPhone 4 has clarity that the human eye is incapable of perceiving at the range of 10-12 inches.

Front camera and display for iPhone 4G

The iPhone 4G has a forward facing camera which allows its users to engage in what is known as “face time”. “Face time” allows users of the iPhones to video chat and Skype from their smartphones.

FaceTime users can switch between the front and rear mounted cameras that the phone has mid-video call, going between their faces and what they are seeing themselves.

A4 chip and gyroscope

The iPhone 4 contains a similar processing system that is in the iPad which improves power management. With the new processing system the phone can be on standby for up to 300 hours, 6 hours of 3G web browsing, 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing, 6 hours of talk time, 10 hours of video, and 40 hours of music playing.

The chip also allows for the usage of GPS, Bluetooth, an accelerometer, a compass, and an ambient light sensor.

The Gyroscope in the iPhone 4 is a 6 way gyroscope which is similar to a gaming controller, it allows the user to play games on the front screen by tilting the phone up and down, front and back, and left and right.

Droid

Droid phones are a newer product on the market which allow for users to have access to many multimedia sources on their mobile device.

Page 12: Smartphones presentation

The Droid X by Motorola comes with a 4.3” HD display which can play full length movies.

Full length movies can be uploaded on to the phone from a computer, or downloaded directly on the phone from the internet using the phone.

Using Apps Droid users can also watch TV shows and Video Blogs.

Skype is also on the Droid but does not allow users to see each other as they talk like the iPhone does.

Page 13: Smartphones presentation

Recording Capabilities

The Droid allows users to record videos in 720p quality with slow and fast action modes. A user can use a cable to watch these videos in HD on any TV.

The camera on the Droid X is a 8.0 Megapixel camera with 1/1,100 shutter speeds, auto focus, and a dual LED flash.

PC Replacements

Smartphones will behave more like laptops over next few years.

In June, DoCoMo started offering the Toshiba T-01A in Japan, a super-fast phone that uses an advanced Qualcomm chip.

forthcoming power apps, including tools that can handle photographic effects and process large, high-res images and videos.

Connected Devices

John Jackson, a vice president of research at CCS Insight. “The phone — and the cloud-based server side intelligence behind it — will know you, your location, your social networks, and your preferences in food, media, and communication. It will predict your next moves. The multi-trillion dollar question is who enables it and controls the sources and uses of information.” For example, phones in 2015 will know when you are near a McDonald’s

or Starbucks and offer to pay your bill. Augmented reality – connected devices could form into an ad hoc

broadcast terminal at sporting events where you can view a video feed from a guy in the second row or up in the nose-bleed seats.

According to John Shen, the Lab Director at Nokia Research Center, “the smartphone of 2015 will go even further: You will be able to link phones together to form a cluster where a group of phones provides PC-like processing capability.”

Gaming

With faster processors and faster carrier service and Wi-Fi, gamers will be able to connect for an experience co-operative play with two players on screen at the same time, incredibly fluid gameplay mechanics, and much more realistic console-like sound.

At the heart of this new technology: Faster networks and ubiquitous connections for anytime gaming with anyone.

Social Networking and Connections

In 2015, there will be no need to use Facebook on a computer anymore, because your connections will occur in real-time when you meet people in person, swapping contact info, photos, and even personal details (like who you are dating or what you plan to do later that night) in an instant.

Consumer analyst Michael Gartenberg says, “this social integration will spawn entirely new services and features on smartphones in 2015. For example, once everyone is easily connected through a smartphone portal, you can walk into a room and search for people who with similar interests. New marketing paradigms will emerge as well as companies sell their wares to a target audience. “

Minority Report-style marketing will explode, offering services and deals to customers as they walk into Starbucks based on a specific purchase history.

3D Smartphones

Nokia showcased their 3D smartphone in 2009. The very rudimentary 3D image displayed did not require any type of glasses to be viewed. Motorola has also released information about a 3D smartphone which is capable of displaying 3D images without glasses using two different 2D screens to create a 3D effect.

Sharp announced a newer technology known as Parallax Barrier. This technology offers the ability to switch between 2D and 3D modes on a screen and is usable without the need for 3D glasses.

Things such as 3D video games on a smartphone are one possibility.

Media is also another big possibility with 3D movies on smartphones.

Communication may also benefit from the addition of 3D, imagine a technology similar to video chat in 3D for 3D smartphones.

it is inevitable that 3D smartphones will become the standard in smartphone technology in the future

LG Optimus 3D

Concept: the world’s first

3D smartphone No glasses,

contents in the 4.3-inch LCD and 3D come to life.

It has dual 5-megapixel cameras in the rear which allow you to capture 3D video in 1080p, for playback right on the phone, or a 3D TV via HDMI.

downside: Adding depth to

a screen you have to touch could make the phone harder to use

viewing 3D content on a small screen typically lacks the punch that has made 3D popular in movie theaters.

Motorola Atrix 4G

Facts: You can plug Motorola’s Atrix 4G into

its optional dock to use it as a 13-inch notebook

This gives you a full-size screen, keyboard, and even a separate battery to charge the phone as it sits.

AT&T will open the Atrix 4G for preorder on February 13, and begin shipping units March 6 or earlier. The phone itself runs for $199 with a two-year contract. Downside:

The optional laptop dock will cost you $500, and because it doesn’t run Windows 7, it does a lot less than a $350 netbook would.

Kyocera Echo

Facts: small3.5-inch touchscreen but it

becomes a 4.7 inch LCD screen by sliding it apart and a second identical screen rises up to meet it

The two screens allow you to browse side-by-side websites, read an e-mail in one screen while you reply in another, and even play games where one screen acts as a controller, similar to the Nintendo DS.

Sprint will offer the Echo for preorder within the next few weeks for $199 with contract, but it won’t begin shipping until spring.

Downsides: Not many apps will work with

the dual-screen functionality right off the bat, and running two screens at once will cost a lot of time on battery life.
