Who knows what a WIKI really is?

Educational Implications

of a WIKI?

Wiki-mediated learning environments facilitate social constructivist design models. The students are brought into close proximity with one another, the content, and the instructor so that collaborative learning activities that support improved learning outcomes are possible.

Joshua Gaul - WIKI key functional features for educators’• Create a post with an image, a table, and a bulleted list.

• Edit that post after the fact.

• Go back and revert to the first version of the post.

• Edit another person's post. (Can they see who made which

edits?)

• Export a post as another format (PDF, doc, html - which ones

work?).

• Print a post - how's it look?

• Use the search function to find a post you have created.

• Add a member to the wiki giving them the lowest possible level

of access.

• Comment on someone else's post.

• Change the theme of the wiki.

• Make the wiki private.

• Make one page of the wiki private. (?)

Based on the results of our project, Wikispaces has made us lean in its direction, however we have determined that a good solution for us would be to build this in-house. This is for a few reasons:

---Login is easier to handle if its within an already owned software (Open Atrium)

---We aren't sure of the immediate buy-in, so spending $6000 a year on an enterprise software

doesn't make sense to start. If we get lots of interest, we'll re- consider at that time.

---A little more control over use may ease the minds of end-users; we will offer this as an alternative option. If people would like to still use their existing wikis in Wikispaces, PBWiki, etc., they are welcome to.Wikispaces will be the best solution when we have a high volume of buy-in. For now, we can "duplicate" its capabilities in house, based on what you have told us are priorities in a tool like this. We are hoping to be setup for testing for the summer term or, at the latest, the fall term.
