What a Clock Looks Like- Clocks have two hands, a big hand and a

small hand.- The big hand tells time in minutes.- The small hand tells time in hours.

Page 3: Telling Time Edu 290

What Do the Numerals Mean?- A clock has twelve numerals, 1-12. - Each one represents five minutes.- Twelve numerals x 5 minutes means that

there are 60 minutes in one hour.

Page 4: Telling Time Edu 290

Past or to the Hour?- If the minute hand is in the red region, it

means that time is being told past the hour (the hour just started).

- If the minute hand is in the green region, time is being told to the hour (a new hour is approaching).

Page 5: Telling Time Edu 290

How the Clock WorksThe clock can be split into quarters and

halves. If the big hand points at the 6, 30 minutes

has passed (half of 60).If the big hand points at the 3, 15 minutes

has passed (half of 30).

30 minutes has passed

15 minutes has passed

Page 6: Telling Time Edu 290

How the Clock Works ContinuedIf the big hand is at the 9, 45 minutes has

passed (30 minutes + 15 more since it’s another quarter hour).

time and has many examples. Check it out!

Page 8: Telling Time Edu 290

Lets Look at Some Examples… Example 1:

The big hand is pointing at the 1, meaning 5 minutes has passed. The little hand is on the 12 meaning the hour is 12 o’clock. The time is then 12:05.

Page 9: Telling Time Edu 290

Examples Cont.Example 2:

The big hand is pointing at the 12 meaning it is on the hour, 0 minutes have passed. The little hand is on the 2, meaning the hour 2 o’clock. The time is 2:00.

Page 10: Telling Time Edu 290

Examples Cont.Example 3:

The big hand is just about on the 1 meaning a little under 5 minutes has passed. The small hand is on the 5 meaning the hour is 5 o’clock. The time is roughly 5:04.

Page 11: Telling Time Edu 290

Examples Cont.Example 4:

The big hand is on the 5 meaning that 25 minutes has passed (count by 5’s until you reach numeral 5). The little hand is on 10 meaning the hour is 10 o’clock. The time is 10:25.

Page 12: Telling Time Edu 290

Final ExampleExample 5:

The big hand is just a little past the 5 meaning a little more than 25 minutes has passed (count by 5’s until you reach numeral 5). The little hand is on the 9 meaning the hour is 9 o’clock. The time is roughly 9:26.

M.UN.01.03 Tell time on a twelve-hour clock face to the hour and half-hour.

M.UN.02.05 Using both A.M. and P.M., tell and write time from the clock face in 5 minute intervals and from digital clocks to the minute; include reading time: 9:15 as nine-fifteen and 9:50 as nine-fifty. Interpret time both as minutes after the hour and minutes before the next hour, e.g., 8:50 as eight-fifty and ten to nine. Show times by drawing hands on clock face.
