One day, God sent an

angel named Gabriel to

Nazareth to deliver an

important message to a

woman called Mary.

‘Hello Mary,’ said Gabriel. ‘Do not be afraid. God has chosen you. You are going

to have a baby boy. This baby will be God’s son and

you must call him Jesus.’

Mary was excited and told Joseph, who was very worried.

‘I love you Mary, but how can I marry you now?’ he asked.

So God sent another angel to talk to Joseph.

‘Joseph, Mary has been chosen by God to be the mother of His son, Jesus. You must marry her and look after them both.’So Joseph married Mary straight away.

At this time, the Roman Emperor Augustus ordered everyone to return to the place where they were

born to sign a register. So Mary and Joseph had to travel to Bethlehem, even though she was pregnant and the baby was due soon.

‘Do not worry Mary,’ said Joseph. ‘We have a donkey who can carry you and I will look after you.’
