*A Few Helpful Definitions from the

OED

*Diversity: The condition or quality of being diverse, different, or varied; difference, unlikeness.

*Multiculturalism: The characteristics of a multicultural society; (also) the policy or process whereby the distinctive identities of the cultural groups within such a society are maintained or supported.

Page 14: The International Association of School Librarians-A Professional Development Tool

*Why do we care?

*“Most importantly, cultural competence begins with the recognition that everyone has a culture, and that the current culture represented in many libraries is the culture of mainstream communities, even when those libraries are located in areas that are distinctly different from mainstream communities.”- Patricia Montiel Overall, "Cultural Competence: A Conceptual Framework for Library and Information Science.” The Library Quarterly, 79 (2009): 175-204.

* It is our ethical responsibility as school librarians to support the different cultures that exist within our student bodies.

* It is our ethical responsibility to not show only diversity (different aspects of the same thing, i.e. “American” culture) but we MUST support and emulate multiculturalism through our collections and most importantly, through our actions.

*Our population is changing and our students are changing. We are to prepare them for a world that is full of cultures different from their own. It is ever-more important that we teach them how to be multi-cultural people to succeed in a multi-cultural world.
