About the Kalahari

• Located in Southwest Africa and stretches for 900,000 square km

• The word Kalahari is derived from the Tswana word Kgalagadi mean “the great thirst”

• Only 0-10 inches of rainfall per year in the Kalahari

Environmental Conditions

• Record High in temperature is 136 degrees Fahrenheit

• Deadly Sandstorms occur frequently

• Is Considered one of Africa’s last wildlife paradise

• Most dangerous part of the Kalahari is the excessive amount of radiant light

• Many riverbeds that are dry out due to the heat

Life in the Kalahari

• Many tribes still successfully live in the Kalahari including: The Basawra, San, and Bantu people

• Were given the nickname bushmen by European Settlers

• The Bushmen’s language includes clicking sounds

• Europeans first settle in 1879. 250 of these settlers and 9,000 cattle died within the first three months due to the brutal conditions

• The Kalahari is still populated by Europeans due to the great source of diamonds

The Natives

• The Bushmen who live on the land use their knowledge of the land to survive

• Due to the lack of sanitary water, Water from plant roots is the main source of water

• The Bushmen houses are huts made out of branches and tall grass

• The Bushmen’s tribes are primarily nomadic

• Their way of life is now available to the public through certain tourist packages

The Human body

• Major body systems effected by the Kalahari

• Cardiovascular system is effected by the extreme heat, humidity, and air pressure all put stress on heart for people who are not accommodated to these conditions

• Integumentary system is effected by the sun’s radiant light, wind, and sand particles which are all harmful to the skin

• Immune system is effected because if this system does not become immune to the dangerous diseases and terrible sanitation it is very hard to survive in the desert

Human Adaptations

• Two adaptations of the Human body while in the Kalahari occur in these body systems

• In most natives there is a fatty deposit surrounding vital organs such as the heart in order to keep warm at night

• Natives have become immune to most airborne diseases which are in the Kalahari
