Purpose of the Respiratory System

The purpose of the respiratory system is to take oxygen breathed in from the lungs into the blood so it can spread to the body cells. It also gets rid of the carbon dioxide in your body.

The Purpose of the Lungs

Your lungs are complex organs, but what they do is take a gas (carbon dioxide) that your body needs to get rid of and exchange it for a gas that your body can use (oxygen). The airways are a series of hollow tubes, which let oxygen enter into the lung tissue as we breathe. Your lungs send oxygen to your heart so the blood can have oxygen in it.

The lungs are a pair of spongy organs located inside the rib cage. The right lung has three sections, called lobes, and the left lung has two.

The Trachea

The Purpose of the TracheaThe trachea or windpipe, it is used so air can travel through your oral and nasal cavities to your lungs and back. The Trachea is located below the Larynx, which is just under the Pharynx (Throat).

How does the Trachea work

The trachea (windpipe) forms the trunk of an upside-down tree and is flexible, like a vacuum tube, so that the head and neck more. The cells that line the trachea have minuscule hairs, which collect any dust that you inhale, and prevent it from entering your lungs. It is then removed by coughing.

Lung Cancer

Treatment Depending on which type of lung cancer you have you will

get different treatment. Most cancer is treated by chemotherapy and radiotherapy to the lung, surgery is only suitable if the cancer has not spread to any nearby lymph glands.

PreventionTobacco use is the leading cause of lung cancer. More than 85% of lung cancers are caused by smoking. One study shows that eating a diet rich in nutrients called phytoestrogens may help reduce your risk of lung cancer. Phytoestrogens are found in a wide variety of whole grains, legumes such as chickpeas, vegetables, and soy products.
