The final school bell has rung, the books and pencils out the door and summer fun has officially started! Children love the hot summers, because they give the perfect opportunity to spend tons of time outside. Whether it’s swimming, hiking, going for a bike ride or playing with friends outside summer months are always fun!

Summer months are awesome, but its also a time for parents to be careful and protect their children from the dangers of hot summers.

There are many areas where parents have to be careful and we have covered just a few here as an overview.

INSECT BITES Insect bites can be a pain. They can cause rashes and in cases serious illnesses. Some safety tips are:

•Protective clothing (long sleeves, long pants, tucking pants into socks)•Insect repellent•Staying in the center of paths where there are many plants

HELMET SAFETY

A safety bike helmet must be worn whenever a child is “riding on wheels.” This means on bicycles, scooters, skates, rollerblades, skateboards and any other vehicle where wheels are involved. Some safety tips are:

•The helmet must fit properly to cover the head•Helmets must be cleaned as summer months can have a lot of humidity•Be sure the right type of helmet is being used. For example, a bike helmet needs to be used for biking only

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

•Teach children to walk, not run, across the street and in between parked cars•Children should cross only with an adult or an older, responsible child.•Use sidewalks whenever possible.

WATER SAFETY

Summer is a great time to jump in the pool or the sea. Some safety tips are:

•Focus on your children 100% of the time•Make sure you are at arms length at all times when your child is in the water•Guide your child to not drink the water they are in, whether it is in the pool or the sea – it is unclean

SUMMER PROTECTION

The summer sun can be hot and scorching. Some safety tips are:

•Avoid too sun exposure during peak sun hours (10 AM – 6 PM).•Try to wear cotton clothing, a cap and sunglasses when you are outside•Sunscreen is a must – use atleast SPF 15 and apply it 30 minutes before going out in the sun

POISON IVY, OAK AND SUMAC

Playing out in the summer months means playing around in gardens or near leafy areas as well. There can be some very poisonous plants around. Some safety tips are:

•Consider wearing protective clothing to help decrease the amount of exposed skin.•Learn how to recognize what poison ivy, oak and sumac look like•Avoid bushy, overgrown areas and places which may contain these plants

SUMMER FIRST AID KIT

•Every family should have at least one first aid kit at home which is well stocked and readily accessible.•Make sure the first aid kit has band aids, dettol, cotton, cream and pain killers•Don’t forget to restock the kit once an item has been used.

DEHYDRATION AND HEAT RELATED ILLNESSES

•Keeping well hydrated is very important – your child must drink atleast 2 litres of water a day•Children (and adults) must remember to drink every 30 minutes•Give your children a bottle of water to carry with them when they head out to play

PICNICS AND GRILLING

•If you are grilling outside, tell children to stay away from the grill even after grilling is over•Make sure all foods have been grilled not charred•Carry foods in a cool box while having your picnic outside
