Top ten ways to be successful with online courses More and more colleges are opting to use Learning management software systems in order to increase
options for students and enhance their educational experience. For those who are new or not used to
the online classes it can be daunting, here are some tips to stay ahead and enjoy learning.
Relax First—Relax, this is a major reason to take an online class in the first
place. You want to be able to learn on the go or else when it is most
convenient for you.
This may find you on your bed with your lab top or in the coffee
shop. In the end it doesn’t matter as long as you are comfortable
studying where you are at.
Do not take this to mean you can slack! This is the last thing you want to do as an online student
because things catch up to you fast if you sit back and smell the roses.
Organize Second—Organize yourself so you know what you need to get done for the month and what it will take
from you. It is important to have an idea of what you need to put in to the class before you just plunge
into it.
Enjoy Reading Third— Enjoy reading because this will be much more reading and writing
intensive due to the less interactive approach to learning. This means you should
be ready to take on a few books and papers during the semester.
Work with Peers Fourth— Find a friend who is taking the same class or just make a friend. It is always helpful to find
someone who knows what you are going through and can give you tips and work on assignments with
you.
Find a Tutor Fifth— Find a tutor if you are really struggling with concepts. Often times
this is where online classes can be hard but they really shouldn’t be if the
student takes some initiative on him/herself.
Interact More with Students and Teacher Sixth— Find ways that you can interact more with other students and with the teacher. Whether it is
asking good questions, posting on forums, or just emailing occasionally for feedback, it is important to
be an engaged learner even if it is online.
This will help you remember key concepts for the finals.
Take It Seriously Seventh— Take the class seriously! This is oftentimes hard for students
because no one is holding them accountable (directly at least).
Find Motivation Eighth— Find someone to push you forward in your studies and goals. If you let people know your
goals then they can help keep you accountable for them.
This can be a spouse or just a friend.
Little by Little, Step by Step Ninth— take everything on in little chunks. Taking too much at a time to get ahead can actually make
you burnout before the end of the semester is even close.
Take Advantage of Online Courses Tenth— Use your online resources to your advantage. See what it takes to move around the Learning
Management Software effectively.
If you are able to map things out before you start you will be in really good shape for the rest of the
semester.
