What is The National Student Clearinghouse?

The National Student Clearinghouse® is a non-profit organization providing education verification for higher education institutions.

More than 3,400 colleges and universities, enrolling 96% of all students in public and private U.S. institutions, participate in the Clearinghouse.

What is Naviance Alumni Tracker?

Naviance Alumni Tracker allows schools to obtain alumni post-secondary outcome data from the Clearinghouse directly within Naviance. Schools submit alumni information to the Clearinghouse from Naviance, and the Clearinghouse populates post-secondary outcome data.

The data includes where alumni have enrolled in college, the terms they completed, and degrees earned.

Current Situation for Many Schools

1. Inability to measure a high school’s effectiveness in placing students in degree programs

1. Current / future state and federal requirements for reporting post-secondary outcomes

1. Inability to make data-driven decisions based on student performance after high school (i.e. where to invest resources in high school based on post-secondary outcomes)

2. No systematic way to connect current students to graduates attending specific colleges

1. No data available to set goals for college enrollment and completion (i.e., using data to motivate staff and students)

Determine if AP scores and courses are a predictor of post-secondary achievement. Share statistics with students in later years.

For example, determine how students with average ACT/SAT scores perform after high school.

You can also determine what percentage of your graduates are college ready, as defined by ACT’s college readiness standards. Look at ACT’s definition of college ready scores, and use the Test Ranges report in Naviance to see if your graduates are college ready. *

Degree Earned by Time Frame

Know how many years it took for graduates to earn a degree. This report helps answer the questions: -Are students taking a long time to complete degrees? -How do our students compare to their peers across the state?

You can see state averages for time to completion in the report Time is the Enemy.

With Alumni Tracker, you can determine post-secondary outcomes for any student group within Naviance. Some schools track outcomes for the following groups:

1.Students receiving free or reduced2.English language learners3.Student athletes4.Students in a pre-engineering program5.Students in after school programs or club6.First Generation college-going students7.AVID, College Summit, or Upward Bound students8.Students with learning disabilities9.Any other student group in Naviance

For each group, you can ask, is there a correlation between students participating in these activities and college attendance and completion? How should we allocate resources based on these results?

Using the Data

Naviance reports also allow you to combine different student characteristics and run reports on those combinations. For example:

1.How many African-American students with GPAs between 2.0-3.0 graduated from a 4-year college within 5 years?

2.How many Latino students with GPAs between 3.0 – 4.0 enrolled in a post-secondary degree program?

3.How many ELL students with SAT scores below 1600 attended 2-year or 4-year degree programs.

Several additional ways to use the data:

1.Share improvements in college enrollment and completion with the press and local community. Showcase students’ achievements and the progress you have made.

2.For private schools, share statistics about your school with prospective students and their families.

3.Share post-secondary enrollment data with school staff during a kick-off meeting at the start of school. Use the data to set goals and rally school staff to help students make a successful transition after high school.
