So they hardly get time for breakfast, as there is always a rush in the mornings. Usually children do not feel hungry early in the morning, as soon as they get up and more often they forget or tend to forgo, as they have to reach school on time. It is even a bigger problem for the slow eaters, which most children are. Breakfast is considered less important, as it is just a small meal. Breakfast is a small meal but a very important meal for the body. Why do we need breakfast? We need it to really break the fast as the word itself suggests. There is a long gap of 7-8 hours after dinner and by this time the body has already digested all the food and used up the glucose it had received from the last meal. Glucose is essential for energy and it has to be replenished to get the level of energy that the body and mind requires to start the day. So breakfast is really the push required by the body to start again. Benefits of breakfast :- Children who take breakfast without fail are always better performers. As the body gets the nutrients required, the child becomes more alert, more attentive and can concentrate better. These kids also have a better immune system. Kids whose stomachs are full in the morning are seldom cranky or hyperactive. They are on the contrary well behaved and more creative. What to eat for breakfast? An ideal breakfast should contain all nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and fibre. Carbohydrates gives energy, protein gives strength and perks up the brain, vitamins and minerals keep the body healthy and protect it from diseases. From cereals and breads you get carbohydrates. Fruits have everything like carbs, minerals, vitamins and fibre. Milk and dairy products provide protein, minerals and some fat too. Eggs are a good source of protein. Banana is also good; it gives the feeling of fullness. Light meals should be preferred for breakfast as the digestive system is still not ready for heavy food. Keep changing the breakfast menu by including items like toasts, sandwich, idli, upma, poha, porridge, nuts etc. Eat different fruits on different days. Allow the child sufficient time to eat breakfast comfortably. Make the child go to bed early so that they can be woken up early. This will give ample time to have breakfast as well as get ready for school. In this way sleep as well as food requirement will be fulfilled. Anger is an emotion which we feel and experience from others too. Even children are prone to anger. The question is ‘how to deal with this negative emotion’?Let me share with you a story. One day Buddha was walking through a village and a very angry and rude young man came up to him and said, “You have no right teaching others. You are as stupid as others. You are nothing but fake.”Buddha was not upset at all and he calmly asked the young man, “Tell me if you buy a gift for someone, and that person does not take it, to whom does the gift belong?”

The man was taken aback and answered, “It would belong to me because I bought the gift.”Buddha smiled and said, “You are correct and the same is true for your anger. If you become angry and I do not get insulted, the anger returns back to you. You are then the only one who becomes unhappy and not me. All you have done is hurt yourself. If you want to stop hurting yourself you need to get rid of your anger and become loving instead. When you hate others, you yourself become unhappy. But when you

love others, everyone is happy.”The young man listened carefully to these words of wisdom of the Buddha. “You are right, O Enlightened One! He said, “Please teach me the path of love. I wish to become your follower.”Buddha answered kindly, “Of course, I teach anyone who truly wants to learn. Come with me.”I hope now you know how to deal with anger, whether it is yours or comes from another. After all, love conquers all.

Life is no less than a roller coaster ride for us in these times. Science and technology is developing by leaps and bounds giving rise to a surge of benefits enjoyed by this generation.Children have become smart and savvy ahead of their times. So where does this leave parents to guide, nurture and groom them as near perfect human beings? There is an underlying, perennial stress where bringing up a child is concerned. It is actually a challenge where parents do find themselves in a whirlpool of emotions namely-tension, anxiety, fear, uncertainty, etc. There is a rat race to keep up with the times and the pressure is mounting day in and day out on both the parents and children.Considering all this, many questions crop up in our minds. Are parents not taking it easy? Are children not able to enjoy the simplicities and little pleasures of childhood? Is our perspective changing regarding the real meaning of life? What picture are we portraying to them about life? How much transparency a parent and the child have in

their relationship? The queries are endless and my mind is still groping for the satisfactory answers and solutions. As a teacher and as a parent I have arrived at some beliefs and thoughts which I would like to share with you. Firstly I believe, no matter how much the world advances, certain basics values and virtues will remain as the foundation of our lives. Parent should take on the responsibilities to strongly imbibe the wrong and right in the minds of their children. Our relationship with our children needs to be transparent. This happens only when we give them required respect and adequate space to grow. This will provide them with a sense of responsibility and make them realize that they are individual entities. Further, this will infuse them with confidence of taking decision for themselves, giving rise to their self-esteem.Children look up to the parents who are non- interfering and not nagging unnecessarily. Our fears and anxieties should never be reflected or imposed on them with our dos and don’ts. So trust, understanding and respect are the

keywords to strengthen the bond of children with their parents.Parents have to keep their eyes always open to look for their children’s needs and desires. This makes it easy for the parents to help their children whenever they need their help. Most importantly, a child’s teacher and parent have to work as a team. This is the only way the child will be able to overcome his or her imperfections and strengthen his or her abilities.Going by these ways I have felt better, happier and easier to bring up my children. After all it is a co-effort. Expectations are not always the parents’ prerogative. They are always two sided. This is why children often look up to us for our support.Expecting too much too soon because it is a competitive world should be ruled out. We certainly want to see our children grow up as balanced human-beings and not disoriented personalities. So let them progress and grow with one step at a time by giving them ample of breathing space. After all they are the most priceless gifts of god to us and for the future of our country.

Clearly, making friends isn’t the same as being popular or likeable; especially among the older age group children. To make friends, it turns out, children need to be able to carry out sophisticated social being, screen potential pals for certain positive qualities and make careful assessments about how much common ground they share. And in order to be a good friend- the kind of loyalty and dedication required- child must not only be fun to spend time with, but capable of being emotionally understandable and reliable. Choosingprospectivefriendsisnotsimple,andaccordingtopriorresearch,kidsgothroughadetailedmentalchecklistwhendoingso.Kidshavealonglistofwithwhomtheydon’twanttobefriends.

Furthermore, once two kids decide they like each other, what determines whether their friendship is happy and long-lasting? Kids have different expectations of friendship- and that when it comes to being happy with the way a friendship is going, those expectations are key.

Why do friendships break? When a friend tells a lie, fights, says bad words, be friends with others, proud and prejudiced in nature, competent spirit enters, changing priority, jealousy, spill secrets, misguide or plays with others.

There is always the risk of a friend disappointing the expectations: letting down, making friends with someone else, just not being there for you, attitude and ego issues, or simply misunderstanding or conflicts. As a result, not holding a grudge of maintaining friendship and being incapable of knowing its causes, some kids dart around from one friend to another; successfully making friends but quickly losing them.

Onthewhole,lesssatisfiedwiththeirfriendship,childrentendtobelessfearfuloflosingtheirfriends.Theyoftenswapandchangetheirfriendsataseeminglyrapidrate.Itisnotunusualforthechildtobebestfriendswithsomeoneoneday,andnotthenext.

Children are unable to deal with situations when friendships go wrong. Naturally, when the reason behind the breakup is serious, discouraging the friendship works. But promoting non-erratic friendship help kids with more cooperation and they are less antagonistic towards one another. Thence it becomes important to recognise when there is a potential issue and offer the child the best support they need. This will also help kids to handle disappointments and hold onto friends over the long term.

Chances are that they will be back to best friendagain within a day or two!

After-school activities are more than just fun and entertainment, they’re important to a child’s development. A NOTE FROM THE EDITORRains are still not on the cards as global warming surrounds us in all spheres. A scorching summer has left its mark in the form of heat strokes, infections and a general feeling of malaise. When we hear of rains occurring in other parts of the country, we are envious and look up at the clouds with frustration. The country is united in the mass prayers that are chanted everyday to invoke the rain gods but with care not to incite them to cause another Uttarkhand-like catastrophe.FIFA fever is giving all sleepless nights and a few unreasonable fights as a few teams emerge as the favourites. The spirit of the game deserves respect and teaches us to treat success and failure dispassionately (a few stray tears cannot be

avoided). May the best team win while we enjoy the game! The important thing is to play well and not play to win. As we bring to you another issue of our school newsletter, we are proud to present the interviews of our toppers. We would like to reiterate the need to let children enjoy while they can without putting too much pressure. This is the age to have fun, make friends unconditionally and indulge in as many activities as possible, whether in school or after.

I would like to share a short poem that I had written sometime back but which is more relevant now-

“Let me be like me, O mother! Not akin to another,Not caged by expectations, not bound by conditions.

Let me live my life of freedom, happy monarch of my kingdom.Free to fly and fall and rise, as myself and not in any guise.

Cherish me for whaat I am, and not for what I could be,Play with me while you can, before I soar up and flee.”
