Urdu Nazm and its grandeur in Urdu poetry Urdu Poetry has many forms and its beauty is beyond any description. Traditionally originated in the Persian countries this has marked its glory all over the world today with many famous people being associated with it. No other language has such rich treasure so the poetry written in this language can sparkle the best way. Urdu Nazm is also a major part of the Urdu poetry. It is normally written in rhymed verses and also in modern prose style poems. This can be simply referred to as a ‘poem’. This Nazm has many different forms in itself and it also describes the complete attitude of the poets who have written it. Some of the important poets of Nazm writing were Nazeer Akarabadi, Iqbal, Josh, Firaq, Akhtarul Iman, Ali Sardar Jafri and Kaifi Azmi. Doha A Doha is a couplet consisting of two lines, each of 24 instants (Matras). Each line has 13 instants in first part and 11 instants in the second part, where a short letter is counted as one instance (Matra) and long letter as two instants (Matras). Many Hindi and Urdu poets have written books that explain the whole stories and epics in the form of do have. Marsia Marsiya or Marsia is an elegiac poem written to honor the martyrdom of Imam Hussain a.s, the son of Imam Ali a.s and his comrades of the Karbala. The Marsia is essentially religious and are written in sad verses. The word ‘Marsiya’ is derived from the Arabic word ‘Risa’, meaning a great tragedy or lamentation for a departed soul. It is usually in six lined stanzas with the rhyme aaaabb. The recitation of these in the first ten days of Muharram is one of the greatest rituals in Muslim life. Also a fully developed Marsia can be considered as an epic.

The famous marsia writers in Urdu are Mir Babar Ali Anis, Mir Moonis, Salamat Ali Dabeer and Mir Zameer.

Qasida

The classic form of Qasida maintains a single elaborate metre throughout the poem, and every line rhymes with the other. It typically runs more than fifty lines, and some times more than that. It is sung in happiness and glory. The word Qasida means "intention" and the genre found use as a petition to a patron. A Qasida has a single presiding subject, logically developed and concluded. Often it is a panegyric, written in praise of a king or a nobleman, a genre known as madiha meaning "praise”.

Qawwali It is a form of Sufi devotional music poem. The poetry is implicitly developed to be spiritual in its meaning, even though the lyrics can sometimes sound wildly secular, or outright parsimonious. However the central themes of Qawwali are love, devotion and longing. Generally, this Qawwali is performed mainly at the Sufi shrines or darghas throughout South Asia, and today it has also gained global popularity. Qawwali music received international exposure through the work of the late Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, largely due to several releases on the Real World label, followed by live appearances at festivals.
