Objective

o Explore the educational benefits of

incorporating technology with the Common

Core State Standards for mathematics

o Particular attention to CCSS Math Practice

5: “Use appropriate tools strategically”

o Social media apps including Facebook

and Flickr as well as some demonstration

apps and games

2014 Statistics

As of January 2014:

o 90% of American adults have a cell phone

o 58% of American adults have a smartphone

o 32% of American adults own an e-reader

o 42% of American adults own a tablet

computer

Standard 5: “Use Appropriate Tools Strategically”

Mathematically proficient students are:

o Abel to consider the available tools when solving a mathematical problem

o Familiar with tools appropriate for their grade or course to make sound decisions about when each of these tools might be helpful, recognizing both the insight to be gained and their limitations

o Able to identify relevant external mathematical resources, such as digital content located on a website, and use them to pose or solve problems

o Able to use technological tools to explore and deepen their understanding of concepts
