Let’s Play for ChangeThe new IKEA Good Cause campaign, Let’s Play for Change, will specifically focus on children’s right to play and develop, highlighting the benefits of play for all children. Though the topic is new the mechanics are familiar. For every children’s book and toy sold during the campaign period, the IKEA Foundation will make a donation of € 1 to projects in some of the poorest communities in the world, supporting chil-dren’s development and learning, equal participation, sports and of course – play.

Why is play important? We know that play is learning for life. It fuels our de-velopment. It makes us more creative, stronger and more active. It teaches us how to work together and care about each other. It sparks curiosity. Play makes the world bigger. For children and grown-ups. So for us, it makes sense to see how we can find ways to do more of it. It helps to think of play not as toys and games (although those definitely don’t hurt!), but as a state of mind. A way of finding the fun in everything you do – especially those normal, everyday activities that are such a big part of our lives at home.

Say Yes to Play.

4 | THE IKEA POINT OF VIEW OF PLAY

»We know that the world wants and needs more play. In our research we’ve seen that 50 % of all adults want to find their inner child.«

»Only 6 % of parents interviewed said they had no concerns about their child.«

»Safety concerns continue to directly affect chil-dren’s play. Anxiety about allowing children to play out with their friends has increased.«

Play is a basic needMany people are not aware that play is a basic need, and that every child has a right to it under the UN con-ventions on the Rights of the Child. The IKEA Founda-tion has partnered with some of the most prominent NGOs on this topic: Handicap International, Room to Read, Save the Children, Special Olympics, UNICEF, and War Child. The partner programmes funded by the campaign will focus on creating safe spaces for vulnerable children to play and develop.

The IKEA FoundationThe IKEA Foundation (Stichting IKEA Foundation) is the philanthropic arm of INGKA Foundation, the owner of the IKEA Group of companies. We aim to improve op-portunities for children and youth in some of the world’s poorest communities by funding holistic, long-term pro-grammes that can create substantial, lasting change.

The IKEA Foundation works with strong strategic partners applying innovative approaches to achieve large-scale results in four fundamental areas of a child’s life: a place to call home; a healthy start in life; a qual-ity education; and a sustainable family income, while helping these communities fight and cope with climate change.

War ChildWar Child works toward a world in which no child’s life is torn apart by war. Armed conflict is a reality for millions of children today. War Child is committed to supporting these children to overcome their experi-ences, and have a real chance at a better future. We work in 14 war torn countries with the people and institutions that play an important role in children’s lives such as parents, teachers, community groups and governments. This approach gives children the confidence and opportunity to build a brighter future for themselves, their families and their communities.

For the Let’s Play for Change campaign War Child will provide children in Jordan and Lebanon who have been affected by the Syrian conflict a safe environment to play, learn and develop.

Save the ChildrenSave the Children believes every child deserves a fu-ture. Around the world, we work every day to give children a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. When crisis strikes, and children are most vulnerable, we are always among the first to respond and the last to leave. We ensure children’s unique needs are met and their voices are heard. We deliver lasting results for millions of chil-dren, including those hardest to reach. We do what-ever it takes for children – every day and in times of crisis – transforming their lives and the future we share.

For the Let’s Play for Change campaign Save the Children will prevent unsafe migration of children by promoting protection, education and play for children on the move.

UNICEFUNICEF promotes the rights and wellbeing of every child, in everything we do. Together with our part-ners, we work in 190 countries and territories to translate that commitment into practical action, fo-cusing special effort on reaching the most vulnerable and excluded children, to the benefit of all children, everywhere.

For the Let’s Play for Change campaign UNICEF will provide safe spaces, education, nutrition and health support to promote Early Childhood Develop-ment and child protection for children in resource-poor communities.

Room to ReadFounded on the belief that World Change Starts with Educated Children®, Room to Read’s innovative mod-el focuses on systemic transformation within schools in low-income countries during two time periods which are most critical in a child’s schooling: primary school for literacy acquisition and secondary school for girls’ edu-cation. Room to Read works in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children and ensure girls can complete secondary school with the skills necessary to negotiate key life decisions. Room to Read aims to invest in the futures of at least 15 million children by 2020.

Room to Read will transform the lives of children through a quality education that includes teacher training, learning materials and developing in children both literacy skills and reading habits.

Special OlympicsSpecial Olympics is a global movement that unleashes the human spirit through the transformative power and joy of sports, every day around the world. We empower people with intellectual disabilities to become accepted and valued members of their communities, which leads to a more respectful and inclusive society for all. Using sports as the catalyst and programming around health and education, Special Olympics is fighting inactivity, in-justice and intolerance. Founded in 1968 by Eunice Ken-nedy Shriver, the Special Olympics movement has grown to more than 4.5 million athletes in 170 countries.

For the Let’s Play for Change campaign Special Olympics will promote inclusion and development of children with intellectual disabilities through sports and play.

The IKEA Play rangeThere’s nothing complicated about play. The only energy needed is your child’s (and there’s plenty of that!). Our safe and fun toys motivate children to de-velop gross and fine motor skills, social skills and log-ical thinking, through role play, imagination, creativity and movement.

In this year’s campaign all toys, children’s books and play furniture included. Find a sample of that range on the following pages. For more, go to IKEA.com.
