Looking at Components of the ENGL 101 Rubric

Take a look at the columns

All columns have a point value. Take some time to see where the paper scored higher on the rubric. These are the strengths of the paper.

The columns where the paper scored lower are the areas where your writing needs to be improved.

To have a stellar thesis

Make sure that your thesis meets the criteria of the Thesis Statement handout.

It should have an arguable & original claim. Review the thesis statements in Joining

The Conversation to see how they are crafted.

Support for the argument

Use your own ideas and examples instead of solely restating the examples and ideas of the writers in the text.

The writers can be used for support, but make sure that you add your own insight.

Further tips to use research

Use the sandwich method to integrate research into your argument.

To do this, know WHY you are choosing to use specific quotes. This will help you highlight the importance of the research.

Meet the page requirement for the paper

A 3 page paper that is only 2.5 pages is 10% under the word requirement, which makes the paper “below expectations” on the rubric for the assignment.

Organization

Have a topic sentence that is not a fact. The topic sentence should show the points you are making to support your argument.

Review the 3EX handout. Have specific, rather than general, examples. Use transitions within the paragraph, so your

sentences flow smoothly.

Language

Review the Okay Ways to Combine Sentences handout. This will help you recognize comma splice, fragments, and run-ons.

Also revise for clarity, make sure that your sentences are clear and direct. Get rid of any wordiness.

Audience and Purpose

Make sure to use formal, academic language. This does not mean using the biggest words.

It helps to keep the context of the writing event in mind.

Avoid profanity, slang, and references to yourself– “I believe,” “I feel,” “I disagree.”

Documentation

Review the Hacker Handbook for a clear understanding of MLA in-text citation.

On the Works Cited, the text should use the full line. Do not copy/paste a half-line format into your paper.

Make sure your Works Cited matches your in-text citations.

Remember, writing an academic paper is hard work, so don’t be frustrated if it doesn’t come easy.
