1 Investigate appropriate sustainable objectives. Sustainable road manuals exist that outline sustainable practices. Choose practices and objectives that make sense to your project.


2 Develop an integrated design process. By ensuring all design team members are on board and informed about the sustainable goals and objectives a truly sustainable project can be achieved.


3 Consider whole of life costs and benefits. What happens to a project after handover can contribute more to a sustainable objective than the construction.


4 Nurture innovation in the design team. Sustainability comes from innovation, doing something better than how we did it before.


5 Consider alternative transport modes. Use of more sustainable modes of transport reduces carbon emissions and increases connectivity.


6 Consider native landscaping and protection and rehabilitation of habitats to improve the natural value of the project area.


7 Employ stormwater management that improves water quality and reduces runoff volume and flow.


8 Consider integration with the community in the form of consultation, community art and activities, and the preserving of cultural heritage.


9 Consider alternative materials, products and sources. This reduces the carbon footprint of the project.


10 Ensure quality and sustainable construction practices so that the sustainable objectives are carried through from design into construction.
