There are many different types of plastic packaging companies, making products as diverse as injection molded containers and lids, blow molded bottles, and thermoformed trays. One of the biggest sectors of the industry is flexible packaging – plastic film and plastic bags.

Whether you are launching a new product, deciding if flexible plastic packaging is the right choice, or you are already manufacturing products using flexible packaging, but you are looking to improve the look of your product, having a sound understanding of flexible packaging companies and how they can tailor their products to suit your specific requirements will go a long way toward giving you the best packaging possible.
Plastics Manufacturing CompaniesIn broad terms, there are three types of companies involved with manufacturing plastic products:
● Chemical Companies
● Processing Companies
● Converting Companies
Chemical CompaniesBegin with raw materials (natural gas or petroleum) and extract the chemical building blocks needed to make plastic. For example, they might take the monomer ethylene from natural gas, and link these small molecules into much larger molecules (called polymers) to form polyethylene. They can add many other chemicals to the mix, and vary the properties of the plastic to adjust color, transparency, strength, temperature resistance and more qualities. The final product from the chemical company is usually formed into plastic pellets, called resin, and shipped to the next company.
Processing CompaniesReceive the resin pellets, melt them down, and form them into the desired shape. They use different processes, depending on the final product desired. For making flexible plastics, a popular method is to extrude the plastic into a film. (We’ll discuss this more below.) Processing companies can ship their products either to the customer, or to the next company for further operation.
Converting Companies
Receive plastic film, and perform additional procedures. For example, they may print full-color, high-resolution graphics onto the film, add handles or zipper closures, or perform folding and sealing operations.
Plastics Manufacturing Companies
As a manufacturer of products requiring flexible packaging, you will probably have little contact with the chemical companies. You and your distributor will likely be involved with, either processing companies or converting companies, to specify and purchase the products you need.
