WARM-UP
Write down everything you know (or think you know) about abstract art.
What opinion do you have about abstract art?
What makes an artwork abstract? What makes an artwork not abstract?
WARM-UP
The famous American Pop artist Andy Warhol said, "Everyone will have at least fifteen minutes of fame in a lifetime." Illustrate your 15 minutes of fame.
WARM-UP
Listen to the song. Draw an image which you think could
represent this song. Remember your elements and principles.
What kinds of lines, shapes, patterns, values, etc. did you use?
WHERE DID IT ALL BEGIN?
Abstraction arguably first began in prehistoric time periods, with the inability to render subjects accurately.
However, we will look at abstraction beginning with the impressionists in the late 19th Century.
WHO DOES IT?
Artists who use all media use abstraction in their artworks.
From photography, to sculpture, to painting.
Artists who use abstraction are not using it as a get rich quick scheme.
PABLO PICASSO, GUERNICA, (CUBISM) KNOW THIS ONE!!!
Created in response to the bombing of the Spanish Village Guernica.
Bombed during Spanish civil war. The bull and horse are important characters
in Spanish culture. What do you think is symbolized in the
broken sword with the growing flower?
AND THIS ONE!!
Pablo Picasso, Three Musicians, 1921
This artwork was supposed to represent Picasso and two of his friends, both of which were popular poets in France during Picasso’s life.
Artwork is an example of collage.
HOW DO WE CREATE ABSTRACT ART?
First: You must know abstraction is a thought process, ask yourself: “How can I deconstruct and simplify this image?”
Possible things to look at when deconstructing a subject. Angles/position What is the subject? Shape Color Light/value
POSSIBLE TECHNIQUES TO USE: MULTIPLE ANGLES
One technique used by the cubists was to show multiple angles or sides of a subject at one time.
Another artist who used multiple angles in their artwork was the influential Paul Cezanne
POSSIBLE TECHNIQUES TO USE: EXAGGERATION
Other artist choose an important part of the image, and once simplified they exaggerate that element by repeating or enlarging which brings emphasis to it.
What is Duchamp exaggerating in this image?
What does this exaggeration do to the image?
