Folk–Rock Album Covers

Looking at the album covers of several different folk artists, well and little known, it is obvious the focus is on

the music and not the artist themselves. This is made clear by the fact most folk albums have art on the cover, rather then a picture of the band/artist. The names of the album/artist also tend to be quite small and are not the main feature of the cover. Frank turner doesn’t use the convention of having art, and has a picture of himself and the album name. But even then he is not looking at the camera and the focus is in the name of his album rather than himself. He’s also playing guitar so its clear he’s selling his music and not himself. A lot of bands base their album covers on popular folk art, for example there is great similarity between Laura Marling’s album cover and the style often used in Mexican folk art.
