CONTENTS PAGE STATEMENT OF INTENT

WHAT LAYOUT WILL YOU BE USING FOR YOUR CONTENTS PAGE (THIS RELATES TO THE USE OF COLUMNS AND GRIDS IN PLANNING YOUR CONTENTS PAGE LAYOUT) AND WHY?

I will be using two columns and 3 grids for my contents page. The reason I am using two columns is because I plan to have the information/text/features all on the right hand side of the contents page; and all the images on the left hand side of the page. The columns make it easier for me to organise my information in the correct places. The grids also help with organisation as I’m using the grids to make sure my images and texts are in the right places of alignment.

WHAT CODES AND CONVENTIONS WILL YOU BE USING FROM YOUR CONTENTS PAGE RESEARCH AND WHY?

Some codes and conventions which I’ll be using from my contents page research include the idea of hip-hop artists wearing dark urban clothing contrasted with brighter coloured text. This makes the genre of my magazine a bit more clear as it is mainly associated with the hip-hop genre. Another code and convention I will use is to use colloquial/informal language when possible without being too informal. This will make the audience feel a lot more comfortable when reading the magazine and make it relate to them as they’ll be using the same language. Furthermore, I’ll also be using pictures taken from a medium, point of view shot which allow the audience to see a lot of the character but don’t show too much. This means the audience can see the features of there clothing and jewellery a lot clearer. Hip-hop music magazines will usually use these shots or medium long shots on there contents pages which makes the genre of my magazine clearer.

WHAT TYPE OF IMAGES, GRAPHICS (I.E. BOXES, BORDERS AND RULES) WILL YOU BE USING TO MAKE YOUR CONTENTS PAGE EASY TO

NAVIGATE BY YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE AND WHY?

I will be using images that relate to the articles written in the ‘features’ section of the contents page. The main image will consist of an image of an artist; representations of the hip-hop music genre will be shown through this image through his flashiness, wealth connotations such as jewellery and urban clothing. I plan for this image to be mainly dark colours which will contrast with the brighter text colours. The sub images will be mix-tape covers representing a different feature on one of the pages in the magazine. This gives the audience an idea of what and who the pages will feature without telling them making it easier for them to spot there favourite artist or an article they would like to read.

WHAT FOUR IMAGE SHOT TYPES WILL YOU BE USING FOR YOUR CONTENTS PAGE AND WHY WILL THEY APPEAL TO YOUR POTENTIAL

TARGET AUDIENCE?

For the main image I will be using a medium shot from a ‘point of view’ position. This will put the audience in the action in a sense as it is direct. It allows the audience to see enough hip-hop representations of the artist such as wealth and arrogance which will be shown through wardrobe and facial expressions which the audience should find appealing as it is what they look for in hip-hop artists.

WHAT STORIES WILL YOU BE INCLUDING IN YOUR CONTENTS PAGE AND HOW WILL THEY BE RELATED TO THE IMAGES?

In the features section of my contents page I will be including stories that relate to the story I will be doing for my double page spread. I will also include many more stories such as ‘mix-tape reviews’ and artist features and also articles that will help the audience such as ‘top ten tips for becoming a rapper’. The images will be images that relate to the features, such as for the ‘mix-tape reviews’ story, there will be a picture of mixt-ape covers. The same goes for the main image which will relate to the artist features. The relation from the images to the features will be clear as the page number of the feature will be on the image.

WHAT DO YOU WANT THESE IMAGES TO TELL YOUR AUDIENCE AND WHY?

I want my images to tell the audience what they should be looking forward to reading and finding out more about. They should show representations of the hip-hop music genre and be able to attract the audience to reading the article that the image represents. This way the audience will have a better idea of what the article will be about before they read it allowing them to prepare for it. Furthermore the audience will be able to understand the article a lot more when they are reading it. If the main image represents a feature article or a interview, the audience should be able to tell some things about the artist before they read it such as arrogance, wealth, style and passion which would make them feel more familiar with the artist before they read the article making them more comfortable and making my magazine more informative.

WHAT COLOUR SCHEME (SHADES, TINTS AND COLOURS) WILL YOU BE USING AND WHY?

I plan to use the colour scheme of the colours black, white and red. All three colours are the same colours used on the front page which shows cohesion between the two pages. I can also guarantee it will be easy for the audience to read as it will contrast dark and bright colours which will be easy on the audiences eyes as it takes less effort for the human eyes to see such colours together clearly. There will be no colour clashing and yet it will still catch the audiences attention as red is a bright colour. The colour red has many connotations such as danger, which relates to the representations of hip-hop artists as many artists that take on the ‘gangster’ image try to create a feel of danger through there image. This will draw the audience in a lot more.

WHAT ESSENTIAL INFORMATION WILL BE INCLUDED IN YOUR CONTENTS PAGE E.G. FEATURES, REVIEWS, COMMENTARY AND WHY?

Essential information that will be included in my contents page includes the features column which will describe the stories on each page of the magazine. These stories will include from an artist interview to mixt-ape reviews to rapping tips and more. The reason I am doing this is because it allows the audience to know what is coming in the magazine which allows them to know which stories they will want to read and where they are; making it easier for the audience. It will be arranged in a column on the right hand side of the page to create organisation which is easy to understand and read. On the left hand side of the magazine will be images which relate to some of the stories.

WHAT TYPE OF FONTS AND FONT SIZES (STYLE OF LETTERING USED) WILL YOU BE USING FOR YOUR CONTENTS PAGE AND WHY?

Just like the front page I will be using mainly sans-serif fonts. I plan to use no more than three fonts and a guaranteed font I will use Is ‘Impact’ which is the same font used on the front page for the masthead and main cover line. For titles such as the ‘features’ title and other things the font sizes will be quite large. However for the sub titles and other information the font sizes will be smaller to make it clear what is what on the page. The font used for the page numbers which will be on top of the images will be the same font as the title and will also be a fairly large size (approx. 72pt). This is to make it clear and easy to see and read and also make it clear which image the number is representing.
