MEDIA STUDIESCamera work and Editing techniques.
By Amie Flanagan.
Continuity Editing
● This is putting clips together so
they appear to be one continuous
story.
Match on Action
● How the shots will match the
action. ● For example: Speed traveling.
● Make sure to keep eye contact
with the camera.
Montage Editing
● This is editing together shots that don't
make a story.
● These are found mostly in documentaries.
● The shots don’t necessary have to make
sense as they are pictures cut in to a scene
where someone maybe talking.
Common use of Montage Editing istitle sequences
180 Degree Rule
● This is keeping the camera on one side of the action. So that the
actors keep in the same place. If the camera crosses the 180 degree
line they will appear on opposite sides.
Keep in one place.
Shot Reverse Shot
● A convention of filming of static conversations is to use two cameras,
you can then edit between the footage from each camera to show
action shots of a person talking or Re-action shots of the person
listening and reacting.
● The 180 degree rule is important, both cameras must be on one side
of the line otherwise the characters will appear to swap places.
Cut Away
● This is cutting into a sequence.
● This allows the audience to see that the runner will run over
some broken glass.
FOR EXAMPLE;Some-one running Image of broken glass to
the runner.
Graphic Match
• FOR EXAMPLE:
• In Shrek we see a sun flower thrown on to a
fireplace. This cross fades into another fireplace
in a different building.
This editing technique is used for when you want
to go to another place/ time. It can also connect
two characters.
It can be done by using representation. E.G. a
sunflower can be crossed faded then the sun can
be in its place.
