Ident Suites A suite of idents is a group of idents that relate to each other that are shown on the same channel over a period of time.

BBC 2 – Channel of the year idents

•   Do they appeal to a certain audience?•   Are they intended to be used at a particular time of day?•   Are they intended to be used at a particular time of year?•   Do they convey a particular message about the channel

In this ident a wave crashes through a hole in a wooden wall shaped as a number 2 as the camera zooms out and “CHANNEL OF THE YEAR” appears on the side of the wood. This ident appeals to an audience who are interested in nature, wildlife and being outdoors. This audience would be watching BBC 2 for the wildlife documentaries and outdoors living shows that BBC 2 are well known for showing. This ident is intended to be shown in the evening when the sun is going down and the evening wildlife shows are about to come on around 7 to 8 o’clock. I think this ident is made to be shown in the colder months of the year as this is an ident of a beach in the evening looking quite cold nothing like the hot sandy scene we imagine when thinking of beaches. However the fact that there showing a beach in this way shows that BBC 2 are looking at nature in a different way and that their shows are not just going to show sunny beaches but more serious wildlife survival shows with intense crashing waves and bad weather conditions. I think this ident shows how BBC 2 are taking a different approach to how we look at nature and what they choose to show on their channel and how it may not be what we expected.

This BBC 2 ident starts off with a very futuristic scene of a flying car travelling through a futuristic city. The camera then zooms out to show that the scene we just saw was created in a zoetrope, which is a wheel shaped object, which was used in the past as one of the earliest forms of 2D animation. This ident would appeal to an older more educated audience as they will know what a zoetrope is and understand the concept of the advert. I don’t think this ident suggests any particular time of year as the ident is shot inside even though it does show a day in the future I don’t think the audience is particularly focused on this. However I do think it suggests a certain type of day as this ident would mostly appear in evening times before sci-fi movies or late night documentaries. This is because this ident will appeal to the same target audience as these TV shows and they will understand the concept.

This BBC 2 ident shows a man opening a tent from the outside, as the camera zooms out we see the 2 shaped hole in the tent and it says channel of the year inside the 2. This ident appeals to an explorer someone who’s looking for a wildlife show or a nature documentary, this audience is likely to have a good knowledge on traveling and other parts of the world and may be able to relate to the scene in the ident. I think this ident would come on television around midday as we can see in the ident the sun is out and the weather suggests a midday or morning theme to it. I would say that this ident would come on in the winter due to the setting and the snowy mountains we can see, however due to the yellow tent and sunshine I think this ident would come on in the summer or spring months. This BBC 2 ident shows the channels creativity and their wide range of outdoor programming.

All three of my idents were for BBC 2 and related to their types of programming. The idents all zoomed out from the big number 2 throughout and said channel of the year on them. Two out of three of the idents were outside displaying BBC 2s outside approach to their channel. There was defiantly a clear recurring theme to the BBC 2 idents I looked at. They all showed a clear setting with a contrasting object or situation. For example the last BBC 2 ident I looked at was on a snow mountain setting but the weather was very sunny and the tent is yellow portraying a very different setting. The colours of all the BBC 2 idents I looked at were all based around the colour teal, even the last ident I looked at which was mainly yellow used a small bit of teal in it.
