In this short film a teenage school boy is depicted as being late for school. As an audience we immediately refer to ideological term that teenage boys are unreliable with timing and are not very organised and this is how the boy is being represented from the beginning. He is further represented as a young, unorganised boy by the actions that he takes. For example he eats his toast in the shower, which represents his stupidity which once again links the age of the boy. Throughout this film the boy is in a very big rush and walks out of his house without any shorts on, only an immature person would forget their trousers hence why he is ideologically portrayed as a young boy doing silly things.

The twist at the end of the film is in theory the “finale” of how the boy is portrayed, the resolution is that it’s a Saturday and the boy has totally misjudged the time of the week. The end cuts out sharply with the boy just about to swear, which immediately corresponds to the age category that this boy fits into, and proves all the ideologies of this age group.

Gender is one of the basic social groups that is used to classify characters / actors/humans in media texts. In this film there are only two main characters, the boy who is late for school, and towards the end the boy’s sister appears on the screen.

Genders are usually based on stereotypes for example the Male “hero” in films are usually Masculine, powerful, handsome. Whereas women are represented as beautiful with a nice physique to attract the male characters, and usually to provoke interest in the viewers. But this short film involves a teenage boy and his daughter. The first thing that usually is thought about a teenage boy is immaturity. This is portrayed in this short because the boy eats his toast in the shower. Only a teenage boy’s brain would function with a thought like that, and from an audience point of view they wouldn’t expect to see a girl-character to do the same.

As the boy is late, he has to rush around, and everything to him is in fast motion. Girls are stereotyped to be very wary of their appearance every day, so they would take time when showering and make-up etc. The stereotypical boy doesn’t attempt to look or sometimes even care about his appearance, and this is how he is represented in this short film.

There is a wide range of Classes and Statuses in the modern world, from elite millionaire to poor, moneyless, bum. The beginning of the film shows the boy fast asleep in a ruffled up duvet, and what looks to be a messy room, which immediately suggests that it isn’t a high class household because it would be tidy, and very organised.

The fact the boy woke up at 11:27am already conveys to the audience that they are not a high class family otherwise he would be up on time, and ready to go at a very early time. The film carries on and the boy rushes around and eats toast in the shower, leaves the house with no shorts on, it all points into the direction that this boy hasn’t been taught with high class manners, which proves he is middle class.

The boy begins sleeping in his bed, which is all ruffled. He wakes up and looks round and sees that his alarm clock displays 11:27am and he rushes out of bed because he’s late for school. The camera follows him downstairs as he gets some breakfast, he slams the bread in the toaster, jittering and jumping about trying to make it come out quicker. Then comically he eats his toast whilst showering to save even more time.

He is about to leave the house when he returns back and opens the door because he had left his trousers on the kitchen unit – not a thing to forget.

The boy then rushes to school, running as fast as he can. He arrives at school and encounters the conflict in the storyline – there’s nobody there. The camera displays the “photo-taking” edit showing scenes around the school and showing the viewer that there’s no sign of life. The boy is confused as he walks into an empty class room where the chairs are on the desks and the light it off.

He returns home and finds his sister sitting at the table colouring her book in. He asks her why she isn’t at school today, and the twist is revealed that it’s a Saturday. The boy, stunned, asks her to repeat what she said because he’s speechless. She replies with a tone of voice that makes him look like an unorganised idiot. The film ends with canned laughter and cuts out just before the boy is about to swear.

Overall this was a very comical short film throughout, and to top it off the twist at the end was excellently mastered. Being a viewer I can relate to the boy because I am of his age group and have been in similar situations as him, which I can look back at and laugh. Seeing the boy in the same situation I was in was very comical. The mise-en-scene included the boy very humorously eating his toast in the shower which really shows how much of a rush he was in and how desperate he was to save time, it brought I very comical feel to it because he was really going to all lengths to save valuable minutes to get to school quicker.

This short film exposes most conventions of a comedy, and in this instance a teenage comedy due to the characters age. It includes a bit of slapstick comedy where the boy forgets his shorts and it includes the characters playing with the audience by enticing them with his silly antics for example when he eats his toast in the shower.

There is a very good effect during the short film sequence where it scans the school grounds for pupils using a “photo-taking” edit, this is very good because it emphasises the fact that no one is around school and the boy has indeed got the wrong day as found at the end of the short film.

Another feel of the short film is the “rushed” sense. The camera is used very effectively by running after the character throughout the house. This gives the audience a feel of urgency that the character has to run to save time. The audience feels that they are running with the character and therefore in a sense, they are interacting with him.
