Luanda International School - Chess Coaching The aim of the Chess Coaching at LIS is to provide enrichment for our students. It is our hope that through providing opportunities to learn Chess, the skills and techniques they learn and develop can then go on to be applied to many real life situations. The Academic benefits of Chess

Focusing – observing carefully and concentrating Visualising – imagining a sequence of events before it happens Thinking Ahead – think first, then act. Develops patience and thoughtfulness Weighing Options – identifying alternatives and considering pros and cons of various

actions Analysing Correctly – evaluating the results of specific actions and sequences guided by

logic, rather than impulse Thinking Abstractly – stepping back from the details and considering the big picture, using

patterns learned in one context and applying them to different, but related situations Planning – developing longer range goals and taking steps to bring them about, re-

evaluating plans as new developments change the situation. Juggling Multiple Considerations Simultaneously – weighing in various factors all at once.

None of these skills are specific to chess, but they are all part of the game. The beauty of chess  as  a  teaching  tool  is  that  it  stimulates  children’s  minds  and  helps  them  build  these  skills while enjoying themselves.
