Luanda International School - Chess Coaching The aim of the Chess Coaching at LIS is to provide enrichment for our students. It is our hope that through providing opportunities to learn Chess, the skills and techniques they learn and develop can then go on to be applied to many real life situations. None of these skills are specific to chess, but they are all part of the game. The beauty of chess as a teaching tool is that it stimulates children’s minds and helps them build these skills while enjoying themselves.

Overview of the course The coach will use the Chesskid.com chess curriculum to teach chess. The introductory course is subdivided into five sections:
Section 1 -- Starting Out, the Basics of Chess: (Lessons 1-4) An introduction to the pieces; the goal of chess; some basic checkmates (Two Rooks vs a Lone King, a Queen vs a Lone King); checkmate & stalemate
Section 2 -- The Basics of Playing, the "Phases" of Chess & the Opening: (Lessons 5-8) Counting attackers & defenders; "special" moves (castling & en passant); phases of the game (Opening, Middlegame and Endgame); three critical "mating patterns"; an introduction to opening principles
Section 3 -- Tactics, Tactics & More Tactics: (Lessons 9-12) Forks, Pins, Skewers, Decoys, Deflection, Attraction, Destruction (of the castled King's position), Discovery and more.
Section 4 -- Endgame Play: Passed Pawns, Technique & King Play: (Lessons 13-16) Checkmate with the King and Rook vs Lone King; the concept of Zugzwang; playing with the King; an introduction to passed pawns; King and Pawn endgames; the concept of "opposition"; how to win once you have an advantage.
Section 5 -- Positional Chess, Planning & Advanced Piece Play: (Lessons 17-20) Advanced concepts: Strategy & planning; more pawn structure; tournament chess & how to recognize a draw

The Chess Coaching is organised separately from the after-school activity programme using an independent coach
The programme is open to students from year 3 to year 12 Lessons will be of 40 minutes duration Each lesson will have a maximum of four students and minimum of two students Applications for enrolment into the programme must be received from parents (not directly
from students) by email to the programme coordinators – [email protected] Applications will be treated strictly in the order they are received, though younger PYP
students will get higher priority for the 15:05 to 15:45 slot. When all available places are filled, students will be placed on a waiting list, and parents informed as soon as a place becomes available.
Parents may state preferences for particular days/ times for lessons when making an application, but must bear in mind that these cannot always be accommodated.
When selecting their after-school activities, students must give priority to their lesson. Once scheduled, lesson times cannot necessarily be changed to accommodate other after school activities.
If a parent wishes the child to discontinue tuition, notice must be given by email to the programme coordinator before the end of the term.
Language of instruction will be primarily English with some portuguese for portuguese speakers
The facilitators reserve right to cancel the training if there are insufficient numbers of students who sign up for the programme.
Payment for Chess Coaching tuition
Enrolment in the Chess Coaching will be extra to school tuition fees. The level of fees for coaching will be set each term by the chess club co-ordinators in
consultation with the chess coach Fees are payable once training dates and times have been confirmed by one of the co-
ordinators The total fees for the term’s lessons must be paid in advance to the accounts department in
cash or via Multicaixa debit or Visa cards. Payment must not be made directly to the coach or the programme coordinators. Tuition will not be given until payment has been received.
Parents will be expected to pay for any materials needed by the student, such as chess sets, chess game timers (clocks), books and other resources.
All fees once paid are Non-refundable.

Attendance, missed lessons and absences
It is the student’s responsibility to attend the lessons regularly and punctually. Lessons missed by students will not be made up or refunded unless by prior arrangement. If an absence from school is foreseen, parents are asked to inform the programme
coordinator by email as far in advance as possible. If the coach is unavoidably absent, then a make-up lesson will be arranged if possible. If this
is not possible, then fees for lessons missed will be re-funded or a credit issued. If a student misses a lesson (other than through unavoidable absence from school) two or
more times during a term, he/she may be asked to withdraw from the Chess Coaching. We, the school, undertake responsibility for
Finding the best qualified and experienced coach available in Luanda. The coach where possible will be Angolan nationals who have at least a basic command of English.
Monitoring the standard of the tuition offered at school Timetabling the lessons and monitoring the attendance of students. Communicating with parents by email, or in the case of general information about the
programme on the school website. Parents are asked to be responsible for
Ensuring that students do not cancel their attendance to After-School activities (ASA) (to which they have already committed themselves), in order to participate in the coaching. All students are expected to demonstrate commitment to the ASA they already signed up for.
Encouraging regular attendance and punctuality at lessons and making the necessary transport arrangements and ensuring the students are picked up promptly after lessons. Any uncollected primary students will be sent to the Busy Bees programme.
Providing a positive learning environment at home: remember that in order to progress, the student will need to practise regularly, and in the case of younger students we recommend that parents supervise the practise.
