CREATING BLOODLINE: THE TEASER TRAILER Once, we had finished filming and started the construction of our

teaser trailer, me and my production team took it in turns assembling and editing our teaser trailer with the main role of editor being split between us. I was assigned:

Role C) : Modifying edited sequences in negotiation with the director/ producer

Role D) Dubbing additional sound effects, music or voice over as appropriate which I will be sharing with Solyanna and Terri.

And Role E) : Creating titles and credits for the finished project. This PowerPoint will be focussing on Role D and my task in selecting and suggesting a soundtrack and non digetic sounds with a specific focus on booming SFX and how I selected appropriate sounds and music to create dramatic effects.

Looking back at my trailer research and storyboards, sound was a crucial element in a trailer. It ensured the audience’s focus and engagement within the narrative and also built up curiosity with in them as they wondered what would happen next. Using, my research and statement of intents, this is how I chose our sound and why.

Once I did the rough footage of the trailer, I wanted to brainstorm certain music, sound effects and soundtracks that we could use so I that I had a sense of guidance in suggesting and selecting music that fitted with the moving image.

I was the last in my group to add sound. My first task was to focus on non digetic sound of booming SFX. Looking at my research real media texts and analysis of booming SFX used in action trailers, I found that booming SFX consists of many instruments and is tailored to the moving images. Thus, I am going to have to create booming SFX from a variety of instruments such as bass, cymbals and drums which is appropriate for our genre as it adds to the tension and dram being portrayed.

Looking back to our storyboard the first ten seconds of the trailer the transitions will be accompanied by booming SFX accompanied by text on screen. This is a good way to engage our audience’s attention from the start and persuades them to continue watching. It is also a typical convention of action movies, as one of out real media research texts, Takers uses it at the opening of the trailer. Using the sound folder, I chose to focus on the bass, cymbals and bass section. By mixing these three digetic sounds, I was able to create booming SFX. I mixed the sounds, by splitting bits of each sound in each sequence, so that the sound featured all the instruments.

As I was working with the booming SFX , it was possible for the audio track to become unsynchronized with the video. When this happened, I saw red numbers appear on both the video and audio clips. Fixing this problem is easy as I followed the following steps: 1. Right-clicked on the red numbers for either the video or audio. Whichever clip I clicked on would move into place. For example, selecting the audio, would preserve the video clip’s position in the timeline.2. Chose Move Into Sync. The selected clip moves back into sync.

I then had to focus on suggesting and selecting music for our soundtrack. Soundtracks are a typical convention in our genre and it was something that we had intended to include in our trailer. We decided to choose a R’N’B soundtrack as it reflects our genre of urban action and just by hearing the soundtrack the we have already established the genre of our trailer. We also knew that a R’n’B soundtrack would appeal to our target audience as it is the genre of music that they are most interested in as opposed to rock genre. Using a R’n’B soundtrack would provide our target audience with a feature they are familiar with in a unfamiliar trailer. The R’N’B soundtrack we chose was T.I – We Ride. This was a mutual decision between me and my colleagues , we felt that the lyrics interconnected with the storyline and was best appropriate for our trailer and its genre.

Role D) Dubbing additional sound effects, music or voice over as appropriate: R’N’B SOUNDTRACK Looking at our initial storyboards, me and my production team had decided that

we wanted to follow conventions that we found in our research texts and put the soundtrack at the end of the trailer needed to edit precisely he beat of the music, so that it created parallel sound with the moving image. Thus I followed the following steps:

1. Clicked in the Timeline panel. 2. Selected a clip in the timeline (such as the music track). 3. Pressed play to start playback. 4. Added a Layer Marker, pressed the Multiply symbol (*) on the numeric keypad. 5. n order for me to create parallel sound I had to use my sense of creativity and

rhythm. I tapped out each beat or audio event that I wanted to sync to. 6. When the playback finished, all of the Timeline markers appeared. 7. I then moved between markers, pressing) Ctrl+Right Arrow or Left Arrow

(Windows). 8. Marked In and Out points as needed in order to edit.

Due to the soundtrack being positioned at the ending of the trailer, it was important that the sound did not just randomly cut off as this would give a disorientating and amateur effect. Likewise, me and my production team did not want to use the soundtrack all the way through the end, as for the credits we wanted to use non dietetic sounds of basses and swishes to give our trailer that “ wow” factor as the ending was important in surprising the audience as this would leave the a lasting impression of the trailer. Therefore, I suggested that we should lower the volume of the soundtrack as it gets to the end, so that when the credits are about to come in, the sound comes to a natural end and doesn’t seem as abrupt.

In the audio track header, I clicked ‘ show key frames’ and chose show track volume which allowed me to change the track’s volume level over time by placing key frames lower as the sequence was coming to an end.

Finally, to preserve this audio track and all the other sounds me and my co workers added, I locked it down to prevent accidental edits. I did this by :

• Clicking the lock icon to lock an individual audio or video track or shift-click a lock icon to lock all audio or sound tracks.

• This enabled me to work on one audio track without affecting any others.

Reflection My role in choosing additional sound and music as appropriate

to our genre has been enjoyable. My interest in music helped me in choosing and selecting the best soundtrack for our trailer, I chose a soundtrack that represented our narrative and it’s genre as well as a genre and artist that will appeal to our target audience, thus I think the soundtrack will play a key role in persuading our target audience to go and watch Bloodline. My creativity came through when I had to create booming SFX tailored to our trailer’s moving images. My eye for detail came out, as there was a vast range of sounds under the Cymbals, Bass and Drums section. I had to choose the sounds that best echoed the booming SFX we heard in our research texts, this has made my eye for detail sharper as I can be more concise and specific about what I am looking for, a skill that I didn’t really have previously.
