Why is PDHPE important in Primary Schools?

PDHPE Empowers Students

My RationalePDHPE encourages students to adopt a healthy lifestyle. This is important because it will help them achieve and maintain “mental, physical, social and spiritual wellbeing” (BOS, PDHPE Syllabus, P 6). PDHPE has its place in the curriculum as it encourages an understanding and valuing of self and others, promotes physical activity and teaches informed decision making that propagates responsible action (BOS, PDHPE Syllabus). http://www.disneypicture.net/r2718.search.htm

Understanding and Valuing Self and Others

PDHPE provides the basis that students are individuals and also member of groups. It stimulates the valuing of others with the goal of continued cooperative teamwork and stable and satisfying interpersonal relationships (BOS, PDHPE Syllabus).

Benefits of Physical activity

PDHPE allows a continued refinement in basic movement skills. The rewards and failures which students encounter producing these skills in class provide motivation for them to master it. The goal of versatility in producing these skills is sought to benefit both physical and psychological health with the later being achieved through PDHPE being a social outlet (BOS, PDHPE Syllabus, P 7).

Informed Decisions

With the consistent focus on decision making and allowing students to rehearse behaviours in their best interest they will reap the full health benefits from their education in PDHPE (BOS, PDHPE Syllabus, P 7).
