Survey responses; Question one: Gender?

The responses were that 3/8 people that took the survey were male, and 5/8 were female. This helps me produce my magazine because I will target it at females instead of males because of the results of question one. Therefore I will include content that would attract a female audience rather than a male. I will also include colours that are more likely to attract females.

Page 3: Planning For Music Magazine

Survey Responses; Question two: Age?

The responses to this question were that 1/8 people that took the survey were in keystage 3, 2/8 were in keystage 4 and 5/8 were in keystage 5. This helps me to produce my magazine because the majority of people were in keystage 5, so my magazine will target a more mature audience. Therefore I won’t include things like games which would attract a younger audience, instead I will include content which attracts an older audience.

Page 4: Planning For Music Magazine

Survey Responses; Question three: Favourite Genre?

The responses to this question were varied because I left it as an open question so that they people taking the survey had more choice on what they wanted to select. From the results 2/8 people like hiphop music, 1/8 likes Indie music, 1/8 likes all music, 1/8 likes metal music, 1/8 likes R ‘n’ B music, 1/8 likes pop/rock music and 1/8 likes rock music. I have decided to group these together so that it is easier to choose the genre for my magazine. I have grouped hiphop with R ‘n’ B, and metal, rock and pop. This means that my results are that 3/8 people like hiphop/R ‘n’ B, 1/8 likes Indie music, 1/8 likes all music and 3/8 likes Metal/Rock/Pop. It is hard to decide which genre to choose because there is the same number of results for two categories. However, I have decided to produce a hiphop/R ‘n’ B magazine because they are very similar kinds of music so overall I think that category got the largest vote. I will include content that attracts an audience who are interested in hiphop and R’n’B.

Page 5: Planning For Music Magazine

Survey Responses; Question four: How much are you willing to pay for a magazine?

I expected the results for this question to vary like question three because I also left this as an open question. However, the results were all between £2-£5. 5/8 of the results had £3 included in their answer so therefore I have decided to pitch my magazine at about £3. Therefore I will add a lot of content to make it worth £3 and hopefully this would attract people to buy it because the main vote was £3 which suggests that is what people are willing to pay.

Page 6: Planning For Music Magazine

Survey Responses; Question five: What mode of address do you prefer?

The responses for question 5 were that 3/8 people preferred a formal mode of address and 5/8 people preferred a informal mode of address. These results have helped me decide what mode of address to have with my magazine because I will choose the majority vote which is informal. This will make the magazine more friendly and an easy, relaxing read. Creating my magazine in an informal manner will also fit in with the hiphop/R’n’B genre.

Page 7: Planning For Music Magazine

Survey Responses; Question six: How often do you buy magazines?

The responses from this question show that 1/8 people buy magazines weekly, 3/8 buy them fortnightly and 4/8 people buy them monthly. This will help me produce my magazine because I have now decided that I will produce my magazine to be a monthly issue, this means it will contain a lot of information that will cover a month. This also means the price of £3 will be worth paying because a lot of information will in contained so people will believe it is worth buying.

Simple Font styles.Fonts are used to attract the reader of the chosen target audience by the magazine company.Magazines and newspapers combine serif and sans serif fonts on one page, i.e. serif fonts for body text, sans serif for headlines or captions.

Voice

Font: Calibri (body)

Description: The font features rounded stems and corners that are only visible in large sizes. The font includes characters from Latin and Greek scripts.

Effect: This font isn’t very detailed so it is easy for the reader to read. It has got soft edges so isn’t too harsh on the eye.

Voice Voice

Font: Blackoak Std

Description: The font is very wide and bold. Its very modern.

Effect: The font is quite hard to read because it is so wide, so takes up a lot of space. However, it is very bold so captures the attention of the reader.

Font: Engravers MT

Description: The font is in capitals which makes it look bolder to the eye. It is also very easy to read.

Effect: The font isn’t very detailed, but would attract the audience very easily. The edges are hard but it would still look effective on a magazine cover.

The Blackoak Std font and the engravers mt font are most appealing for me. The Blackoak Std

stands out very well and would attract the reader because it is very bold. The engravers mt stands out for me too because it is very easy to read and stands out very well so would also attract the reader very well. The fonts are very similar but also very different. I think the face that the engravers mt is all in capitals could get slightly confusing on the cover of a magazine, yet the Blackoak Std

would be difficult to read sometimes. However, both the fonts are very eye-catching and I think they would attract the correct audience for a music magazine.

Page 9: Planning For Music Magazine

Developed font styles.

Font: Arabolical 1

Description: The font is very round and doesn’t have any sharp edges. This gives it a very soft feel.

Effect: I think this font would look good on the front of a magazine, however, if there was too much writing it may get a big difficult to read because it is quite fancy.

Font: Airstream

Description: This font is all joined together and there are no sharp edges. This gives it a soft feel. The exclamation mark also gives it some emphasis/ It is quite bold s would attract the audience.

Effect: The font would look good on the front of a magazine but like the other font if too much text was written in it I think it would become difficult to read.

Font: Anonymous Clippings

Description: This font is very wacky and would attract the audience very well. Its bold so that will add to attracting the audience. The letters are all a different design and the backgrounds behind each other are also very different.

Effect: I think this font would look good on the front of a magazine and would fit in with the hip hop genre. However, the backgrounds behind the letters may not fit in with the colour of the magazine so it might end up looking unprofessional.

I think all of these fonts would be good for a hiphop magazine. They would all attract the audience and look very musical which fits in with the magazine. I think the first font is the best because it is most legible out of the three. It is quite curvy which gives a nice soft feel to the magazine, this fits in with the genre and the exclamation mark gives it more emphasis which also attracts the audience. The font gives a good relaxed good mood to the magazine because people want to relax whilst reading a magazine and this is quite a relaxing font.

Colours Schemes.

Colours: Red, Black and Yellow.

Effect: The colours stand out, although they are quite plain. They would keep the magazine looking professional. The red is quite bright so it attracts the reader’s attention to look at the magazine.

Colours: Red, Blue and Black.

Effect: The blue and red are very bright and eye-catching so this attracts the audience. The black is dark so is easily seen on the top of red and blue. It can also be made very bold which makes them stand out more and attracts the audience effectively.

Colours: Blue, White and Orange.

Effect: These colours clash which makes them stand out from one another. The white tones down and breaks apart the fact that they clash so still appeals to the audience. The blue and orange are very bright and eye-catching.

Pitch.

- My research and planning has shown that I will produce a hip-hop magazine mainly targeted at girls in key stage 5 and it will be an informal magazine. It will also be released monthly.

- I found that hip-hop magazines are quite funky and that the photos stand out more than the text. The main article title is on the front cover and a few stand firsts are used.

- My magazine will be successful because I will follow how a hip-hop magazine is produced so make it look more professional.
