In the early 60’s the faculty of certain University were concerned about the quality of the introductory courses being offered to the undergraduate students. It was felt that these were burdened by an old-fashioned syllabus and that the exciting discoveries of recent years, many of which had occurred at in the campus itself, were not being conveyed to the students.

Thus, it was decided to reconfigure the first course offered to students, with the goal being to generate more excitement in the students. X was conceived in late 1987 by Mike Salisbury, part of the parent company’s marketing team.

A survey in 1991 one showed that more children 5 and 6 years old could recognize X than could recognize Mickey Mouse or Fred Flintstone. This resulted in a lot of litigation and the company replaced X with non-anthropomorphic image.
