5. Place two strips right sides together, stitch one of the short ends with a 5/8” seam allowance, and press seam open. If you have more than 2 ruffle strips, continue until you have one long ruffle strip.

6. Finish these small seams, applying the seam finish of your choice.

7. Cut the pieced strip to the “length of ruffle strip” you calculated in step 2.

9. Sew a gathering stitch on the ruffle strip’s top long edge. Pull the gathering stitch to equal the skirt width. Distribute the gathers evenly.

10. Place the gathered ruffle on the bottom edge of the skirt, right sides together and aligning raw edges. Pin in place.

11. Stitch with a 5/8” seam allowance and again 1/4” into the seam allowance.

16. Fold and press the skirt’s top edge to the wrong side to form the casing: 1/2” and then another 1”. Stitch close to the inside fold, leaving a 2” opening.

17. Edgestitch all the way around the top of the casing, about 1/8” from the top edge. This will help prevent the elastic from twisting later.

18. Cut a piece of 3/4” elastic equal to the measurement around the waist. Insert elastic through opening in the casing, using a safety pin.

19. Overlap the ends by about 1” and hold with a safety pin. Try on the skirt and adjust the elastic to fit comfortably. You may need to adjust quite a bit, depending on the elasticity of the elastic.

20. Stitch the ends of the elastic together. Sewing a rectangle shape will keep it secure.

21. Stitch the opening closed. Distribute the fullness evenly. You’re done!
